Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Yeah, my daughter ended up watching the 3rd too.

Solid win despite missing 2 first line forwards. And a PPG to boot.

Yes very solid win. All 3 lines with constant pressure in the offensive zone. And congrats to DesBien on another shutout pulling to within one of the NCAA record. This team just gets it done despite being down 2 significant forwards. They just work really hard! Case in point: with about 4 minutes to go the Badger defense both pinched at the blueline resulting in a breakaway for a Mankato player. Wellhausen chased her down from the off wing and caught her before a shot was attempted. Great hustle play by Baylee at a time in the game when the win was pretty much put away already. Everyone of these players buys into Coach Johnsons system and plays with supreme effort. A fun team to watch!

Hopefully ARD is ok after the needless goon play at the end of the game. It's a little worrisome that she had to come out of the game with 13 seconds left.

All the box score says is goalie interference, nothing in the reports. What happened?

With 5:46 to go, Wisconsin was on a rush and when the play was whistled dead Alexis Mauermann was right up at the net and pushed the Mankato defensemen and the defenseman crashed hard into the Mankato goaltender. Mauermann was called for a deserved penalty but her action looked to me due to the speed of the play rather than intentional. That the defender crashed into the goalie looked incidental and accidental.

With just a few seconds left in the game Keys for MSU-Mankato crashed into ARD after the whistle. It looked pretty bad at first look, on the replay it looked like she made no attempt to stop whatsoever. I'd say it wouldn't be outlandish to say she hit her on purpose.

Keys' knee and maybe her thigh came right into ARD's head. Got to hope she doesn't have a concussion. It would be a terrible way for that particular injury to happen.

Mauermann's play was completely intentional with extra steps and extended arms on the hit. You could argue that she should of been ejected for "intent to injure", by driving a player into the post. I, for one, am glad she wasn't. Her hit on the defenseman was delivered harder than the hit on ARD. That doesn't excuse the hit on ARD, it was a pure goon play. The MSU-M player appeared to drive her knee at ARD to initiate contact.

aw crap, I hope not. The game is dangerous enough without intentional injuries. I had hoped after last year when it seemed that the worst actors had settled down we would be beyond this stuff.

I also hope ARD will be OK. Concussions are bad long after the temporary symptoms go so I hope particularly it is not that.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

If you did not see the St. Cloud game (and by your post I don't think you did) you would know that everything was done to avoid her and in fact there was no contact from behind into the boards. If you look at the replay you can see her doing everything to avoid the hit from behind.
Seems to be a pattern developing with the Mavericks. Last week they ran St. Cloud D Brittany Anderson from behind causing a knee injury that will keep her out for up to 3 weeks. Yesterday in the closing seconds of the game, #5 (D) took a direct line to ARD with shoulder down & plowed into her. She was not doing well after the game. Harrington & Giese might want quit yapping at the refs the whole game & coach their girls on how the game is to be played.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Interestingly - and a little dangerously - Johnson chose to play the last thirteen seconds after ARD came out with an empty net. They won the face-off and played keep-away until the end of the period. If they had lost the faceoff, and Mankato had managed to send the puck the length of the ice, the last few seconds might have been all too "interesting". Curious decision by Johnson...

As for the Mauermann penalty: Mauermann - all 5-2 of her - came in fast and ran into 5-9 Emma Wittchow (sister of former UW forward Eddie Wittchow). Her body language after the play was, to me, that of someone who knew they'd screwed up, had tried to pull up and failed to. That is, sheepish; unintentional.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

(The other thing that was almost 'notable' in yesterday's game was that the goal Mankato got in the second period was on only one of two shots they put on net in the period. Long after the goal, they put a dump-in pass on net that was recorded as their second 'shot' of the period. Had that pass not gone on net, ARD would have her second period this year when she recorded a save percentage of .000. The second period of the Ohio State tie game, Ohio had one goal on one recorded shot. Yesterday, Mankato had one goal on one shot, plus that dump-in. Odd, no?)

I was at the game and it was interesting to watch the handshake line at the end of the game. Not many Badger players extended a hand to the Maverick players. I wonder what the vibe was on the ice. The game did appear to be chippy. I certainly hope Desbien is ok. On a positive note the second goal that Wellhausen scored was a thing of beauty--coast to coast and blowing by the defenseman. I'd say she played quite well in the absence of both Cogan and Pankowski. Nice to see other players step up when needed. Team depth is what wins championships.

He had to be sending a message to Mankato....if you are going to play dirty and intentionally injure my goalie I won't give you another shot at injuring another.....

I am fearful ARD's injury is not minor. She's a social player and is active on Twitter. She and I have exchanged tweets on occasion and usually she's right on top of the tweets. It's been 24 hrs since I reached out and wished her well and congratulated the team and she has not responded (on a Sunday, no less).

The WCHA needs to take action and suspend Keys and Harrington for what happened. I must say I am disappointed in the goonieness of Harrington's teams. I was thinking being an 1980 Olympian his team would play with class.

Without seeing the game, my initial guess was that it was to preserve the shutout for ARD. Put another goalie in for any part of the game and it is not recorded as an individual SO.

Great thought, but Kato had scored a goal. Maybe to give her the win?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Sorry, I thought there was a shut out going. She would get the win anyway. W goes to the goalie of record when winning goal is scored.

Wouldn't surprise me if this is what he was doing. He looked incredulous after it happened and as he was asking the refs what they were calling on the play.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

After watching the Johnson presser....why does no one ask about the status of Shaver and ARD for this weekend's games? (I know at least 1 reporter in the room was tipped to inquire on these 2 players.) No question about the dirty play at the end of the game? Johnson is one heck of a coach, but his pressers are totally devoid of any discussion of anything remotely controversial. He's the Joe Stalin of pressers. The guys ask what he approves they ask and that is it. It's really a joke.

Yeah, I was surprised about the the lack of questions to him in the press conference. It was jarring to see so little information given about the last weekend.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

You can go to the Mankato website under schedule and look for the video on demand. 5:46 of the third period Wisconsin's Mauerman started this whole thing by running Mankato's Wittchow into the goalie after the whistle. Up 3-1 in a one sided game but you have to take out the goalie? Why? Listen to how the announcers at the game describe it after watching the replay. Your questioning Harrington's goonieness and class than I question Johnson's also.

Nobody asks because they know the answer will be empty. No coach is going to say much about injury or status. With the exception of Miller and Idolski, both of whom went after their own team & players at pressers I am not aware of any coach who is going to say anything wildly interesting. There is no upside for them in it.
Nuke LaLoosh: My interviews? What do I gotta do?
Crash Davis: You're gonna have to learn your clichés. You're gonna have to study them, you're gonna have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: "We gotta play it one day at a time."
Nuke LaLoosh: Got to play... it's pretty boring.
Crash Davis: 'Course it's boring, that's the point. Write it down.
