I guess I'm a little surprised, but not shocked by this. Desbiens has really played well (the Sunday game against No Dak was huge for her) and Rigsby hasn't gone back to back games for almost two months. If I had to guess from here on out, the only time Rigsby is going to play twice in a weekend is the Minnesota series and the playoffs. However, I could still see Desbiens getting a start in the first round of the WCHAs.

Johnson's history when he has multiple goalies that play is that he isn't in a big hurry to isolate on one as the starter. Vetter didn't start the WCHA Championship game in either her freshman or sophomore seasons.

Rigsby was the starter against the top end teams at the start of the year and ARD got a game here and there against weaker opponents. I suppose this is the first time in Rigsby's career she's had a goalie teammate that was nearly as good as her, but I'd like to see the Sr. get the starts to close out her college career. ARD is awesome, but the nod should go to the experienced goalie with a proven track record to finish out the year.

By that reasoning, Vetter would have stayed on the bench in 2006 and 2007 and Horass and Dufour would have played the NCAA Tournaments. We also don't know what the prognosis is for Rigsby's knee. If there is a risk of re-injury, then it makes sense to keep Desbiens sharp. The coach owes it to the team as a whole to make the moves that provide the best chance to win a championship. And the coach possesses a lot of information to which we are blind. He knows if a certain player's knee swells up after a game or if a goalie is looking shaky in practice.

Badgers win, I got interviewed by some ABC guy, and got to meet Phil. Not bad.

Also, Ron Hextall made an appearance for UMD in goal.

Badgers did indeed score on the ensuing power play. Wisconsin was buzzing the net pretty good in 2nd and had opportunities to blow it open. UMD played with more intensity in the 3rd and made a game of it. Even had a PP late in game, but took one themselves that essentially ended any chance they may have had.

To be fair (assuming I also understand the reference), Ammerman whacked the heck out of Black and she retaliated. Of course she got called, bc that's what happens.

I asked Coach Johnson in post-game if it would be ARD in net tomorrow and he wouldn't commit. Said it would be a decision they make in the morning. FYI.

I wouldn't say she whacked the heck out of Black, though she didn't keep her stick under control. As soon as Black took a step towards Ammerman, I had a feeling something silly would happen, and Black would be penalized.

I'd just love to see an decently officiated game. They let so many trips go it was insane. Going to the men's game last night just reinforced to me how awful the women's refs are.

My posse got yelled at by a UW fan at the end of the game for behaving in a way that gives UW fans a bad name. We did nothing out of the ordinary. In fact we were a bit more restrained because we sat right behind the dawg pound. It was funny when the dawgs skated unto the ice for warm-ups we were sieving Black when I looked down and the backup goalie was standing there looking right at us laughing at us. They understand the fun and games part of the game itself. The dawg pound trainer did something very nice to us, she tossed a puck over the glass to us after the warm-ups. I think we'll sit there again this afternoon. It was kind of neat watching the line changes and the dawg coaches react to the game, though it's hard to get in sync with the students' chants in that spot.

If I was looking at the right time and spot, she had to toss it three (?) times before somebody made the catch. :-)

You were looking in the right spot at the right time. The issue was that the trainer didn't get the first 2 tosses over the glass.

All I know from today's game is that the wcha refs are gutless. Miller should have at minimum got a bench minor for her f bomb laden 5 minute tirade about the contact between Black and the UW player at the blueline. She really should have been tossed. She was riding Paskey like a rodeo cowgirl riding a untamed horse. He ignored her awhile, then he came over at a stoppage and got chewed out face to face. Finally, the other ref, Glenn, came over and warned her to shut up, which she never really did. You could tell at the end of the first period Johnson was p/o'ed about the whole affair. I have never seen a hockey coach lose their mind like that. I can understand not liking a call, but what she did was totally unprofessional. She really shortchanged her team as she spent way too much time concerning herself with Paskey and not coaching the team. The wcha should ome down hard on Miller.

I don't disagree, but given that she's been doing that for 14+ seasons without being significantly disciplined, I cannot see the league doing anything about it now. :(
