Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I'll agree that UW seems to "play down" to their opposition this year. I don't get that. Unfortunately that means (generally) that the team won't go far in the playoffs.

A successful team never takes their foot off the gas.

Also, re: Springer and Bennett. Springer has looked out of place in every game he's played except tonight I thought he played *ok*.

Bennett. I'm sorry but he's become a seive these last several games he's started. Just poor positioning and way too wild w/puck handling. I'm guessing he could have earned more starts w/a solid performance tonight, now I think this may have been his last start for UW.

That's what young but talented teams do. We're still young and will be all year.

I agree with your assessment of Bennett and his future with us. All but done. That's okay with me though as Goody is a program guy and he deserves the full time job.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Horrible game last night. Im thankful for the win, but it should have never been that close.
I dont think you can lay it all on Bennett though. 3 of the goals were the direct result of turnovers and allowing the other team to have a mostly uncontested route to the goal. Bennett definetly had a poor game, but the defense didnt do much to help him out either.
Im not sure that I would say Bennett is done. Im not ready to give up on a goalie after a few bad games.

Was out in Madison before New Years with jen to see the Badgers play UMass. How's my new favorite player Podge Turnbull doing?? Will pop in here from time to time to get updates! :)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I'm beginning to get nervous that between getting jobbed at the icebreaker on 2 disallowed goals that should have counted & getting jobbed in OT Friday night against UMD we might be sitting at home come tournament time. I'm really hoping that's not the case, because I agree, we've played better than our record, but, unfortunately, the pairwise isn't going to factor in those details.

I'm hoping this group can pull together, learn from some of the tough experiences early in the season, take 13 or 14 points during the next 4 series, and put my fears to bed. I think this is the time that we see what kind of leaders we have in Dolan, Gardiner & Smith (and Murray, who should be wearing a letter IMO). There are points to be had, and we need to come out & dominate some of these lesser teams.

Doug

I just wanted to say that I'm really proud of the way this team has stepped up. When I made the post that I quoted up there I thought there was a chance they'd succeed & pull this off, but that I'd probably be disappointed. After all, it's a young team that, though talented, had not responded tremendously well. They had slow starts & frequently didn't play to their talent level. I understand from reading about it that they may not have played to their level last night, but they came out with a W, and got a big monkey off their backs.

I didn't think after Thanksgiving that there'd be any chance we'd be a top 10 team in the PWR & KRACH at this point, but they've taken care of business. Hats off to the leadership of this team. Sean Dolan has a lot to be proud of, as do the rest of the veteran leaders, with what they've managed to help their team accomplish. That goes well beyond just the guys wearing letters. Murray, Podge, Goody, Ramage, Schultz, Ryan Little, and even Craig Johnson & Ratty have stepped up & done what we've needed them to do.

Now, the rest of the season consists of 7 WCHA series.

2 of those are against bottom half teams (Tech, St. Cloud), and we ought to get at least 6 points out of those 4 games, even if they are on the road. The other 5 are going to determine if this is a tournament team or not.

We're better than Mankato & the Goofers, and they are both coming to us. We leapt over CC in all the rankings this week, and they're at the Kohl, too. 6 games, I'd like to see us pick up 9, but I could live with 8.

At Omaha & Duluth are going to be tough. I'd like to think we can pick up at least 3 points in those 4 games. If we go .500 in those two series I'll be more than happy. Better than that & I think we're a legit contender to make the frozen four.

I'm curious as to what the rest of the Badger posters think. Can this team get 17 points in the last 14 games? Is 20 a possibility, or am I dreaming? What do you need out of them to be confident in our tournament chances & content with the season leading into the WCHA playoffs?

I'll say this, If they can get 17, and we only lose one out of Ramage, Schultz, Smith & Gardiner to the pros over the offseason, I'm going to be suffering from some major irrational exuberance come October (and Rumpel's going to have an awful lot of pressure on him as a true freshman goaltender).

Let's Go RED!

Id say 17 points is a very reachable goal and that even 20 is a possibility if they play well and get some lucky breaks.
Im confident right now of the Badgers' chances in the WCHA tournament. When they are on, they can hang with any team in college hockey. I mean, they did almost beat UM-D 2 nights in a row.
As far as being, "content" with the season, Im not going to be content with anything less than a NCAA championship (which isnt going to happen this year).

I see them getting 16 points.

0 - UMD
4 - Kato
4 - Tech
2 - UNO
2 - Rodents
2 - St. Cloud
2 - CC

Other thoughts....

UWisco WAS too optimistic with it's predictions.

Aktick not only got ice cream, but saw the curse broken. Good for you, loyal Saturday tickey holder.

One thing I've been able to notice watching games on tv lately is 1st Star needs to shoot more and pass less when on the rush. One example is 2 weekends ago he passed from the slot to the wing, when from that spot one would think he could bury the puck in the corner with his eyes closed.

E-mail I got this morning from someone who I trust. "I think Barnes may have broken his hand punching the glass in practice. Not 100% sure but he may be out Friday."

Baggot has an article up this morning noting that Barnes and Sean Little are both hurt and their statuses for this weekend unclear.

Hope it's not true...

Latest I'm hearing on Barnes is that it's a "boxing fracture." A commenter on the 60 Min blog says "Boxing Fracture is generally caused from punching someone or something (obviously) and is a break on the bone in your hand on the little finger."

So can you play hockey with that? He not scoring a ton of points, but he's a key cog in the line-up.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I would say it depends which hand. If its his dominant hand, he is probably out; if not, he could probably still play.
Im just hoping that the outcome of this weekend's games get decided by the players, not the refs...

Thanks to Mark, Sean and all the other Badgers for the things you do off the ice. The little girl in the photo (in the link) is my niece at UW childrens hospital. You can see her story on the link.

Wow Badgerhawk, that made the sting of tonights loss go away pretty quick. Glad to see our boys care. Do you mind if I repost this on the 60 Minutes blog? I think more people need to see this.

Go right ahead and post it. Thanks Chuck.
