WIS Productions Presents "Hockey East 'What IF' ... Shawn Walsh Beats Cancer?"

This is the dumbest discussion going. At least until someone starts 'What If Harkness Never Left RPI'
You managed to drop it down another notch

Guess I see the biggest variable here would still have been what Walshy's long-term career goals might have been? Since the earlier part of his UMaine tenure was at a time that predated the dawn of the Internet age - and since the age of social media never existed until after his passing (and we can only imagine how a personality like Walshy would have embraced social media with a full-on bear hug) - there's not a lot of stuff to draw on for most of us. Do any of our UMaine-iac posters have any recollections about speculation or any confirmed details of possibilities that may have been out there back in the day?

Substitute Sean Walsh for Chuck Norris in all those memes and I think you get the level of adulation he had in Orono.

Why leave when you're king?

If he didn't leave while suspended I'm not sure he would have, he remarried a local women and had a young son when he died. Orono is a decent place to have a young family.

I think that you are spot on here. I know several world-class science faculty who have been at UMO for over 40 years and could have left anytime for anywhere, but have stayed in Orono. Some of them are in their 70s and have no interest in retirement.

How long has Habeeb Dagher (sure I butchered his name) been at UMO? He has done some remarkable research and development with carbon fiber and epoxy materials in the wind energy and bridge construction arenas. Brilliant man who can also draw in funding to support his research. Talk about world class.... that s part of the technical/engineering expertise at the school... also famous for the project manager way back that ran construction of the Hoover Dam, an amazing accomplishment at the time.

I've always tended to believe that myself (plus the local adulation I'm sure was intoxicating) ... but how much was he getting paid, and when someone in The Show basically offers to add an extra "zero" to your paystub, you've gotta think that's tough to say no to, unless you have pretty deep roots and/or opportunities for ancillary income.

(1) On the former, he had a young family with local roots, and he basically "birthed" the UMO program;
(2) On the latter ... UNH'ers remember the Umile/Walshy TV ads for a local dealership. Umile also had a deal with a Manchvegan men's clothing store (yes, I'm serious - and no, it wasn't "Turtlenecks 'R Us"). How active was Walshy in side income stuff up in the Downeast?

I don't remember any tv ads but I doubt he paid for much around here. Certainly had a car from some dealership

Are people's phones/tablets autocorrecting Shawn to Sean?

Where's The Ferg with a math problem when you need it?

Wow ... now that's one from the USCHO "Way Back Machine"!! :D

As in ... "If Player A gives a quarter of his retroactive financial aid to Player B, but Player B started with half of what Player A originally started with ... who has more after Player A's gift to Player B?"

Me? I'd be happy to settle for a defenseman to replace Lidstrom, too. :)

Sorry folks. That last post was done in a moment of weakness. :(

If it offends anyone, plug in "sandwich" instead of "r********* ************ a**" and it works out the same. :)

I have made a couple of negative remarks in this thread, but I do want to say that I think Coach Walsh was a great college hockey coach, and there is no doubt in my mind that Maine would have been a better team if he had stayed healthy. I also think Maine would have won more NCAA FF games with him behind the bench.

I pretty much agree with all of that. In retrospect, you have to wonder if *maybe* Shawn the recruiter didn't trust Shawn the coach enough, and when faced with the enormity of the task of trying to take a nowhere program to the top, he got impatient and decided to cut some corners off the ice to hasten the development of the program on the ice?

Either way, I don't think there is any question that in an era when legendary names like Parker and York (or even that squeaky voiced whistler at the neighboring State U) made up some formidable competition from year to year, Walsh had the biggest impact of ANY coach who's ever stood behind the bench for a Hockey East school. And considering what happened to him, and how quickly that progressed, it's remarkable that his succession plan pretty much kept things going at close (but not quite) to his previous standards for the better part of a decade. And all in a place that considers Bangor the "big city". Off the charts impressive.
