Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?
It's going to be in the 50s here this weekend. Yay!

That's glare ice, not black ice. It's shiny and you can easily spot it. Black ice would be a very thin coating.
today's problem
Black ice is death's spray-on tan. Ran into it in Providence one night and luckily I had all four lanes completely to myself because my car used them all. The car felt like it was levitating -- absolutely no steering, and a graceful glide that made almost no noise. The friction coefficient of that stuff must have been close to zero.
I hit a patch of that on an elevated ramp from 131 to I-196 in Grand Rapids. Hit the rail there but I was already taking it pretty slow that night, and nobody was following me up the ramp. Got it going there and go off on Lake Michigan Drive and found a place to collect my nerves for a minute and look to see how bad I dinged up the car. Thankfully, not bad at all, other than the skid mark in my shorts.Black ice is death's spray-on tan. The joys of living in the Rockies!
Strong and moist!
#blackicemattersYou cannot see black ice. Period. Last year, IIRC (might have been the year before) I hit some on a double-lane on-ramp to a highway. Managed to do a 360, thankfully, before hitting dry pavement and cruising onward. If I hadn't managed that maneuver I'd have been in the ditch.

I turned off the traction control on my car while driving home today. Life is more fun without traction control and a nice snowfall to spend your day.
The brand new MDX handled like a gem in the snow. Where everyone else was getting hung up, this thing was a trooper. From a complete stop on the street it made it all the way up my driveway in a completely controlled way. Fantastic winter driver.

Next time you should venture further away from home.![]()
