Why intelligent people drink more alchol....

Re: Why intelligent people drink more alchol....

One drinks to lower one's intelligence to the level of the group. Ergo...

Why intelligent people drink more alchol....

And how much alchol had you consumed when you wrote this?

Re: Why intelligent people drink more alchol....

As someone who grew up in Fumblebuck MN, that hypothesis is very, very wrong. Heck, a cursory perusal of the paper shows the data spread in all the graphs from lowest to highest is less than 1 standard deviation, that gives a roughly 30% probability of these results being real and over 70% chance of it being from pure chance, those results would never get any where near a real scientific peer reviewed journal.

The smugness of the article sure is nice though. :)

In all seriousness, I think we're all proceeding on that assumption. When they sweep up the eyeballs at closing time, the guys who are left don't head home to Eliot House.

Re: Why intelligent people drink more alchol....

The linked article says "controlling for [wide variety of other influences]," but you could just as easily read the regression as "controlling for intelligence."

The other studies I've seen on the subject pretty much boil down to "income predicts alcohol consumption."

None. Pure coincidence. Was hoping no one would notice, but you did. :)

When I type for fun, I don't spell check as often as I do as when I type for work.

It's obvious.

Drinking kills brain cells. And, like in nature, the weaker brain cells die off easier, leaving the good ones still there. Therefore, it's like culling the herd, and drinking makes you smarter. :D

Paint thinner is techincally alcohol, correct? Please say yes. I need a reason to get back on it since I can't use UW hockey for an excuse anymore.

I think the answer is "no." Paint thinner is an inhalant and doesn't so much get you drunk as high. But don't quote me on it, as I live in neither Wisconsin nor Maine.
