Who's Next for a Move Down from D1, or Drop Hockey Altogether?

Would be really surprised to see Union or RPI consider it. Union is investing in the new rink and has just won the fight for scholarships. At RPI, you have a new president who (seemingly) is more interested in hockey, and it would cause a real uproar amongst some alumni, so I think the question is whether RPI will make changes to significantly improve things or just keep on with the status quo.

I agree with your points, though I'd bet a shiny new nickel that RPI drops from Division I.

Interview with Erik Largen coach of UAF-

“I know people think the situation that happened at (American International), moving to Division II, will be us,” Largen said. “But I continue to have a green light for whatever we need. We’ll be in Division I for the next 100 years.”

Sounds like Alaska Fairbanks is safe for the time being at least.

There was at one time a proposal to combine all three universities in the Upper Peninsula under the UM umbrella as UM-UP joining UM-Flint & UM-Dearborn. The rationale was that they'd save money by having just one administration. It never went anywhere and that's good because the schools would have lost all identity.

There will be one or two state funded universities in Michigan getting shuttered in the next decade. Odds are that Saginaw Valley is the top of the list, but Lake State is a close second in vulnerability.

Ferris is the weakest of the weak academically. A trade school, basically.

As an educator, currently, there is a big push for trade schools. Locally, (Indiana), a huge chunk of our scholarship money is earmarked for trade school students.

So with a capacity of 3300 at the East Grand Forks MN Civic Center hockey arena, the Northland Community & Technical College is eligible for National Trade School Athletic Association (NTSAA) Division 1 hockey!!!!

I would love for my son, who plays at a fairly high level here in Minnesota, to be able to go to a trade school (heavy equipment operator) and continue to play hockey at a highly competitive level.

Except that Ferris calls itself a University. And I'm not intending to critique trade schools.

I know Dakota College at Bottineau (the old Bottineau Community College) plays some mean hockey, but not sure of similar in Minnesota. Although not a trade school I don't know how many credits per semester at such colleges are needed to qualify for the team. They do have some trade school related courses, probably lower cost than trade schools (?)

Calling Ferris a Trade School is really not fair. They have full academic programming with Bachelor Degrees in in core academic areas like any other university. Where they differ, they offer programming in the trade areas under management and engineering categories. They aren't training guys and gals to be grunt workers.

Ferris is also playing for the D2 national football championship. Again. For the third time in four years. They are a D2 football power.

We look at things through a hockey lens on this site, rarely considering the depth or breadth a school may have beyond hockey.

Without a doubt, it will be Denver, which just lost in a shootout to the UNLV ACHA club team. Yes, it was only an exhibition; yes, the HC and top Dman are away with the USA WJC team; yes, some fringe players got ice time. But still...

So, Denver to the ACHA. If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Ha! That was amazingly unexpected outcome. Maybe move the UNLV odds up higher on the "Who's the next school to add NCAA D1 hockey" forum.....

I'm probably going back too far. They lost or nearly lost their academic accreditation back in the day. Maybe it's better now. I didn't intend to malign trade schools per se. I don't think there are enough of them.
