Lady Bird:

Coming of age movie. HS Senior who lives in Sacremento wants to go to college on the east coast. Very solid movie for this subject matter. It's awkward, touching, raw, real, all of it. Saoirse Ronan (who plays the senior) and Laurie Metcalf (the mom; still probably known for the tv show Roseanne) are excellent in their roles.

Great movie, my favorite of the last Oscar this far. (Well maybe Get Out too.) Sort of helps being within a few years of the main character age-wise (as it's set in 2003), makes some of the things feel more familiar.

I was a bit older in 2003, but the emotions of the movie were really good. Get Out is still prob my fave movie of last year; great movie.

Glover did four amazing things in the space of one year (Get Out, "Red Bone," Atlanta, "This is America"). It will be interesting to see what he does with Lando. SW is a pure entertainment franchise with nothing going on above the neck and so he's going to have to really, really dumb it down, but I think he can do that and just be mindlessly funny (he did that charmingly in Community).

Also, a "throwaway" funny role for someone with such a great mind can be extremely entertaining (c.f., Welles, Pryor, Martin) because of the self-reference. I wouldn't be surprised if he completely casts off all his other personae for the role and is a whole new thing. I'm beginning to think he can do anything.

If there's an Entertainer of the Year it's obviously him.

Largely agreed but what was his involvement with Get Out (other than "Redbone" being in the movie)?

I thought he had a significant role in its direction and/or writing with Peele. I could be completely wrong.

For the life of me I don’t understand the hype about Get Out.

It was just ok.

Got tickets for SOLO. After reading up a bit more it sounds like pure fun. No rebels vs empire, no Jedi story, just a good heist movie penned by Lawrence Kasdan and evidently a nod to future stories.

Sounds like Kathleen Kennedy will model sw like marvel.

Next up is Kenobi

Good! All I want is Errol Flynn plowing princesses.

If you meet the canon on the road, kill it.

😂

Also the Freddie Mercury film looks good although the band placed limits on the script. I have to read more on it, apparently this went through multiple director’s hands before they found someone amenable to their demands.

I'm meh on it. It looks amazing and it's a spot-on portrayal of Mercury, but it seems like the band wanted half the movie to focus on the post-Freddie years. They're selling a Freddie Mercury biopic, they better deliver a Freddie Mercury biopic.

It would be like having a John Lennon biopic with a second half that focuses on Ringo's career in the 80s.
