I need a new helmet, the current one just got burned tonight. I was playing in my outdoor league, and with the weather being below zero, the ice gets brittle. We were the second game of the night. Given that, there were quite a few cracks and holes formed in the ice tonight by the time my game started. Playing D, skating backwards while a guy was coming in on me. I'm about to make a move when my left skate hits one of those divots and I go down like a ton of bricks. I'm told that I just landed flat from butt to head, but then my head bounced off the ice and landed again. I certainly have the headache enough to agree with that account. The guy in charge made me quit for the night, and it was probably for the best. I felt a little dazed for a couple minutes, but then I was fine. Still, I need a new helmet now. I think I might look into one of those expensive ones with the advanced concussion protection.

I did some research, and while no helmet will prevent all concussions, I decided on the Cascade.

So far, I've conked my coconut twice with no ill effects. YMMV.

I got rid of my old Jofa last season after suffering my latest nasty concussion. At 57, I can't afford to scramble what's left inside my skull.

I did some research, and while no helmet will prevent all concussions, I decided on the Cascade.

I was looking into the Cascade at work today. I just ordered one from Hockey Monkey right before coming here. I have another, older helmet that I can use for a few days while waiting for the new one to arrive. I replaced that older one because it wasn't well vented, so my head would sweat a lot. It's still in usable condition.

So my team had a league game tonight. I was in attendance but did not play. The steel on my skates broke. Yes, both of them. At the same time, in the same spot. Weird. I don't remember it happening the last time I played, but it must have happened then. The breaks looked identical on both skates. I attempted to test the skates before the game to see if I could still use them. I should have worn my elbow pads. Four strides and I was sliding on the ice in a Superman pose. Jupiter thought it was a riot. I hope Westwood can have them fixed before Friday.

I can bring the helmet (large), a pair of shin guards with a crack running through the one knee cap shell (15" - average length), a pair of gloves (15" - that would be a large size), a pair of elbow pads (large), and even an old pair of skates (CCM Tacks (size 9.5, which is the current 9.0 after CCM resized their line).

Great thread! Did in-house town programs, then travel teams. Never made my HS team (they were loaded, 4 or 5 D1 players, State Champs) but played CYO at Hockeytown in Melrose (long gone). Intramurals @ the 'Mack (Volpe was brand new back then!) and then some adult leagues at Hockeytown Saugus. Our goalie went about 360lbs, so we had to ice the puck if he went down to make a save. Just loved to skate, but got away from it and haven't gone back; probably haven't been on skates in 15 years.

You should get back into it. I'm loving it after taking off a few years after intramurals at BC. I am almost positive there are leagues in Franklin over at Veteran's Rink. NESC in Marlboro isn't that far from Franklin and right off of 495 so that is doable as well (which is where I'm currently playing).

Did you play there back in 2007/2008? I was doing lunch time ice while working up the highway at Waters Corporation. I bet my boss still skates there. He's tall and probably still has a beard.

Yea I've been there since probably 2006 with the same team. Mostly Tuesday nights but since we moved up they gave us some Wednesday night games too.

oh okay, I did mostly lunch time pick up. A few of the kids from middle school and high school would show up. Some of them were legit too. I seem to recall some people from night games inviting me to play on their teams, but I am not sure as it has been a long while.

Fun fact: you were calling us UNH fans hillbillys when we were skating at the same arena!

My wife is moving down to AZ next week (and thus, my equipment will be heading this way as well).
I can't wait to join up with a league and get out on the ice again...

I've avoided some of those lunchtime skates on a rare day off because I didn't want to get smoked but my league is pretty solid so maybe I'm just paranoid. Some guys on my team would do go out there and said it was a lot of good players.

depends who shows up. The high school and middle school kids in the area were surprisingly good for their age. We had a reading HS alum from back in the day who skated on the same team as Sean Collins ( UNH 05), and considering how good he was with years off..makes me appreciate how good D1 players were. There was another guy and his kid who played D3 and they were really good. The guy must have been 50 but he had wheels.

You want real hillbillies, go to southwest virginia. NH people have nothing on them. NOTHING. Most of us are NJ transplants anyway.

NJ is a big state and unfairly gets a bad rap. Its difficult to compare people from Wayne to people like me who grew up near Princeton. Most people in my neck of the woods worked and earned middle class wages, attended good public schools, and played hockey. At the very least, NJ should get a good rap for its growing hockey presence in the juniors leagues as well as the NHL.

that said, I would rather live in SoCal. Beaches, babes, no snow, and oh yes...a strong hockey community.

You know me too well. I also have ton of ankle bend, take long shifts, and yell at everyone. I still don't get why people leave the ice 10-15 minutes early every game though.......

Seriously - what sucks is trying to do what I did in my 20s when I'm now in my 50s. The brain knows what to do, but the message don't get to the legs and hands.

Anyone have experience playing with glasses/sport goggles under a helmet? I'm not interested in contacts right now, but playing without some form of vision correction isn't going to be a reality much longer. Are there helmets that work well with glasses/goggles? Are there affordable goggles that will work with a helmet?
