Whitetail deer hunting - 2009

It's been unpleasantly warm so far here in Wisconsin for bow hunting
and instead of hunting I've been working on several tree stands and waiting for some cooler weather.

Here's a great tease for all you bowhunters.

I saw that article a few days ago.
Nice rack, but honestly, the deer doesn't look very big or heavy.

Here's a video from CNN...

When does bow season start up there? Here it doesn't get going until Oct. 1. By then the temps will be coming back down.

Wow, it's the peak of the rut and this thread is buried on page-6?

I shot a second bow-deer (buck fawn) yesterday morning and now
have two buck tags, one of which will carry over ---> 2010. I'm set
now for venison and will only buck hunt the remaining bow and gun
seasons here in Wisconsin. Speaking of Wisconsin, check out Ame's hunt here.

She really ought to gut that deer out before dragging, ha! :D

Re: Whitetail deer hunting - 2009

There's been quite a bit of ad hoc whitetail deer hunting accomplished by trucks on the state highway that runs by my house. I don't know whether deer populations are up, but the body count sure is. Reason #136 not to work for the highway department -- yuck.

Here's the start of my season, 430 in the afternoon 8pt 11.5 in spread

Congrats PB, nice deer.

Season opened this past Sunday in Michigan, and I sat all day Sunday, plus Monday and Tuesday mornings from 6:30 to 11. Saw a grand total of two does.

Went out for a late breakfast in town on Monday with my dad & uncle - everyone there had about as much luck as we did. It appears to be a down year where my family hunts.

We plan on going back out over Thanksgiving, but don't have high hopes.

Re: Whitetail deer hunting - 2009

Thanks dont feel bad there was barely any shooting around here. Him and the two does he was with where the first Id seen all day and normally the number is around 5 by noon

Yeah, I knew things were bad when I didn't hear my first shot on opening morning until 8:15, and heard a grand total of five or six the whole day. There is a stretch of open farms behind our wooded property, and in a normal year a majority of those guys are pulling a round right at first light.

The rut was also definitely not in gear yet, as the week prior had been quite warm. We finally had two chilly mornings on Monday & Tuesday (around 20 for lows), but nothing was moving. By Day 2 I suspect most of the deer had just found a nice, thick swamp to hole up in until nightfall. They were clearly under no pressure to breed or eat yet.

We'll see how things go later this week.

Rut is definitely in full swing here, shot him last night while he was chasing two does, missed another buck this morning while he was chasing another 2 does

My wife just stood over my shoulder and said this might be the only show guys watch for the Does.

Re: Whitetail deer hunting - 2009

fun fact: you can't hunt in Virginia on Sundays. I thought it was a joke at first.

I am not really a hunter, but went out on opening day. We saw a few does, and even shot one, but we couldnt follow the blood trail to find it. The thing looked like it was pretty well gone, but it still managed to get away.
