What the Fark???

Re: What the Fark???

Now this is one of the most unbelievable things I've ever heard about!

Nepotism is “rampant” at the MTA — but only lesbians get in trouble for it, an under-fire Metro-North executive claims in a new lawsuit.

Sherry Herrington, who makes $170,000 a year as assistant vice president of operations, is under investigation at the MTA after helping her domestic partner, gal pal Stuart Moore, get a job inspecting train cars.

....

In her Manhattan Supreme Court suit, Herrington admits she pushed for Moore to get the gig but insisted she was the most qualified. She also said people at the MTA knew Moore was her girlfriend.

“This is in contrast to the rampant nepotism that is regularly practiced at the MTA at the highest levels,” Herrington alleges in the suit.

The probe into her recommendation of her long-time domestic partner “is based upon sexual-orientation bias and nothing more,” she alleged.

Yeah, I practiced nepotism, but so what, men get jobs for their mistresses all the time and don't get in trouble so why come after me? "Must be" bias, right?

I bet the mistresses don't get paid nearly $30,000 more than was listed or get offices when no one else in that job does...

Re: What the Fark???

Rather disturbing incident tonight.

Driving home from my wife's holiday party on the UW campus, south towards Verona on Verona Road. Just past the intersection with the Beltline, the car in front of us screeched to a halt, along with the semi in the lane to my right. The people in the car in front of me jumped out of their car; and were looking at a body in the raod. They had hit a guy wandering in the road and he was crumpled against the curb. We stuck around, because we weren't able to go anywhere. The fiancee of the girl driving the car ahead of us was already on the phone to 911. Turns out the guy was VERY drunk (everybody, including the police who showed up, smelled it). The poor girl driving was sobbing and in hystercs. the semi driver in the lane next to us saw the whole thing, but we were just behind and didn't see it happen. I felt most for the poor girl driving - it wasn't her fault. We were all driving through a green light. Very disturbing.

So, just a typical night in Madison?

I can raise you ATU 689 chief Jackie Jeter... Not so much on nepotism but just outlandish racist and inflammatory statements. The president is giving an award for the work she has done in making metro so great.

He's later giving a posthumous award to Pol Pot for his work of bringing eye glasses to the needy

Re: What the Fark???

Grown Men Play Tag Every Year Throughout February... every year, for the past 23 years.

The game they play is fundamentally the same as the schoolyard version: One player is "It" until he tags someone else. But men in their 40s can't easily chase each other around the playground, at least not without making people nervous, so this tag has a twist. There are no geographic restrictions and the game is live for the entire month of February. The last guy tagged stays "It" for the year.

a key rule: no tag-backs.

Re: What the Fark???

/never learned, would like to someday without wrecking someone's transmission doing so

reminds me of how I learned....I had to borrow a pickup truck in college because it was my turn to pick up the food supplies for our food co-operative. I forgot to check ahead of time about the transmission, which of course was manual!

At least I understood the theory....:). It wasn't the transmission that was in danger of being wrecked, however.....as the truck was parked in a tight space.

It was release clutch, turn on motor, engage first gear, let in the clutch, lurch forward, slam into the car ahead of me, stall.

Release clutch, turn on motor, engage reverse, let in the clutch, lurch backward, slam into the car behind me, stall.

Repeat several more times, frantically turning the steering wheel with each lurch / slam / stall.

Finally I got out of the space, drove up to the stop sign at the corner, applied the brakes without releasing the clutch, stall.

From there on, I got the hang of it pretty quickly and was zipping about like a seasoned driver on the way back.

If you pay attention while driving an automatic transmission, you can feel the gears shift as you accelerate, which helps you figure out when to shift. You also can get a sense from engine noise or from the tachometer if you know how to read it. It's really merely a matter of practice.
