That’s been around for a while, at least in Midwest. At least 15-20 years. Steal it and there’s just enough platinum to get some money out of it. Meth heads are especially attracted to it for some reason.

I always remember my dad talking about helping set up a plant in Mexico for his company back in the 90s. They were building a new railroad spur, and he was amazed at how clean the worksite was. They said it was only because anything that could be carried would be stolen every single night. The second thing that amazed him was that they were cutting the steel rails by hand, with hacksaws. They said the labor was cheaper than renting a machine. Oof.
