What the Fark 2: That Was... Interesting.

Re: What the Fark 2: That Was... Interesting.

I used to think that being an even bigger a55hole in response was the only way to deal with them. Turns out that while effective on all but the most alpha of a55holes, and still useful in some limited circumstances, it's not a good long-term strategy. Particularly once word gets around the entire office about how you're intimidating and hard to work with.

As I approach 30, I've been trying to take the "calm but firm" approach to workplace bullying. The goal is to make the a55hole look ridiculous and immature, while you remain unfazed or even slightly amused by his/her a55holery.

I use the calm but firm approach to many debates/arguments. It doesn't make you look like a raving maniac, and chances are it frustrates the other person so much, THEY going flying off the handle and look like an idiot.

I knew I had to change something when a project manager told me to smile more, because "you intimidate people". And keep in mind, I had not worked with her very much at the time.

Then at my last performance review, my boss challenged me to act less acrimoniously this year. I've been putting in an effort, even though I am stuck with "one of those faces" :D and the boss' own negativity at times does not help. But it has been paying dividends.

I think I'll pick up this book. My only real strategy for dealing with as*holes is to get through the interaction as quickly as possible, but that nearly always means they get everything they want, which is just rewarding and encouraging that behavior. The worst situations are when they're clients or, far worse, co-workers (since with clients there is at least method in being over-solicitous).

My boss' boss' boss is a prime as*hole, and I've been able to observe him in his natural habitat (the boardroom) a few times. It really does deserve more serious study -- it's well beyond simple aggression or bullying, but complex enough that it probably qualifies as its own multi-leveled personality disorder.

Like many things, The Onion already wrote an article about this ten years ago.

Way too many nasty words in that URL. I got this:

The page you were seeking burned down.

The Cambodian sweatshop where every letter of The Onion is hand-stitched onto the internet recently burned to the ground, claiming the lives of hundreds of underage laborers and webpages. The URL you were looking for was tragically among those lost.

Please return to The Onion homepage, search for a new article below, or call our Recovery Fund toll-free at 1-888-989-7797 to provide the village’s surviving minors with the training and materials they need to rebuild the beloved webpages that perished.

And yes, I now see my original link had the same problem, so, if intentional, well played.

I've had a version of the same talk with my boss. I don't feel as antisocial as I come across, but I think the grim visage must have something to do with surviving Houghton.

"BOOM! Oh I got that! I got ALL that!"

Hilarious.
