what qualities make a good coach?

I've noticed that there are some really good teams that consistently win and teams that lose regardless of the talent. This may occur over years, with that being said the team does change as students graduate, move on, don't make the team, or new talent is brought in, whatever the case may be. I've met coaches who played hockey and became great coaches and others that played, were great players but a coach they did not make. I'm curious to hear from the men who are currently playing hockey, men who have played and even the men who have coached hockey. What do you think are the qualities that make the best coaches? What does/did your coach do to make you become the best player you could be?

(a) The patience of Job.
(b) A sense of humor.
(c) A good communicator.
(d) Good media relationship.
(e) Speaks truthfully to players - even when the truth hurts.
(f) Cool under pressure.
(g) Innovator - what worked last week may not work this week.
(h) Good players - without them, you're toast.

I agree, but I would add that the players have to have respect for the coach and believe in the system that he implements otherwise they will not be a team, just players. The above list helps the coach get that respect.

1- Know your competition! Do the work.
2-Savor your goaltending!
3-Defense First, one way players need not apply!
4-Get off your butt in the off season and search Western Canada for diamonds in the rough.
5-Find the smartest athletes as the dumb ones are a dime a dozen.
6-Make a plan and stick with it.
7-Maturity.
