Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

Re: Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

My cable feed has no audio, for whatever reason. Why did the refs not review the goal at 17:57 of the third? From everything I could see (again without hearing because the audio feed just didn't exist for some reason) SCSU better make some noise about this with the NCHC officials. Refusing to even review it is an atrociously bad call.

The refs blew the whistle before it went in. They probably shouldn't have blown it but it is what it is.

That said....

GO BRONCOS!!! What a great weekend!

It was very clear the refs blew the play dead before the puck went in the net. Whether the play was dead is another question, but the ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle, thus lives the game of hockey.

Great for the Broncos to come away with 5/6 points on the weekend!

Also, for St. Cloud State fans: what was with the fans throwing trash on the ice after the loss? Is that a normal thing? Seemed really classless to me... There was also a fan that WMU HC Andy Murray asked to be thrown out (and asked for extra security) behind the WMU bench.... Don't know what that was about

Re: Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

Whether or not the play was dead isn't a question. It wasn't dead. The refs totally blew the call and gave WMU the game as a result.

Re: Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

Also, please tell me how it was clear the refs blew it dead when there was no audio?

Huskies had plenty of opportunities to score on the PP and didn't convert. Every team/fans can blame the refs. Take them out of the game by out-hustling and outworking the other team. Western Michigan played some great hockey this weekend and could be considered the hottest team in the nation, give credit where it is due.

The play was dead, you can't argue it wasn't. The play is blown dead if the referee loses sight of the puck, which he did. Was the puck frozen? No, but that isn't what constitutes a dead play. Time and time again plays are blown dead even without the puck frozen because the ref loses sight of the puck. It stinks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

And it was clear the whistle was blown before the puck crossed because 1. you can see the motion of the ref with the whistle, 2. Media who was there reported it dead no questions asked, 3. Radio commentary also said whistle was blown dead before puck went into net.

The refs weren't out there to screw SCSU, you guys even got away with a pretty bad extra man on the ice without a call. If you think the officiating was in the Broncos favor tonight I don't know what to tell you.

WMU did play some great hockey this weekend. Doesn't negate the fact that the game should have been tied with 2:09 left. You get a gold star for being such a great sport. Everyone is proud of you.

Argue semantics all you want, the refs blew the call.

Argue semantics all you want, the refs blew the call.

How is that semantics? Let me spell it out for you: Refs lose sight of puck = whistle blown = play dead = doesn't matter what happens after whistle is blown. EVERY team has knocked in a puck after the whistle, Every. Single. Team. It has happened to Western. Does it suck? Absolutely! Is it a "blown call" or a bad play by the refs? No. It happens, the refs cannot make a judgment about a puck unless they have it in sight. Would you like me to quote the rulebook for you? There is NO POSSIBLE way to blow a call about losing sight of a puck. Sight lost = play dead, simple as that.

Overall, I thought the officiating was pretty fair on both sides, there was only one missed call I saw. Refs aren't super human, you cannot expect them to do the impossible.

If you really think the refs intentionally blew the game for SCSU (which would be the only logical explanation for "blowing the call" since as explained above losing sight is an immediate whistle) I think it would be best for you to see a therapist.

Looking at the box score it appears that Hafner won the game for the Broncos. Good to see him rebound from the Miami series. Hopefully he can finish the season playing like tonight.

As for the slap fight over the refs...
They are blown calls when they blow the puck dead when it isn't. It happens to everyone over the course of the season. It sucks, but they don't do it on purpose.

I believe it was more towards frustration towards the refs then WMU. After the game, the refs were standing by the penalty box and fans were walking down to have some good choice words for them. Also it didn't help the crowd out one bit when they showed the replay on the scoreboard of the puck going in only right before the faceoff.

Re: Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

The blown dead goal is one thing, yeah it happens and it sucks and it was the wrong call, but for me the bigger screw up was the penalty on Prochno after they refused to blow dead a clearly frozen puck along the boards near our bench.
These guys were just bad all weekend long and IMO should face a performance review and some sort of action.

I believe the NCHC Has a review process for their refs. We'll see what comes of this. I'd love to hear something from the league on this.

Re: Western Michigan at St. Cloud State: Insert Funny Title

Well, I guess I you just find a way to do it !
Last week against Miami, Josh Pitt drew a 5-minute charging penalty with 4 minutes left in the game. The game was tied at 4-4, and it seemed that all the breaks were Miami's way. We had one goal disallowed. We had three video reviews of our goals, none for Miami's. And as far as home field advantage for the penalty box, I thought we were playing in Oxford. So outskate and outhustle! Our boy, Chase did it against Miami!

I was only at the Friday game, but I've honestly never seen a referee crew more confused in my life. Not knowing who can make line changes, blowing faceoffs, obvious missed calls, etc. I'm certain both Motzko and Andy Murray would agree with me...off the record of course. ;)

Agreed. The 5 minute major against WMU at the end of the 1st game that gave SCSU the lead was horrible as well. Should have been 2 at worst.

He hit Storm square in the back and into the boards, that's a five.
