West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

You must root for the same teams I have rooted for.
A few years have been great but they are few and far between.
1960, a couple in the 70's, 1980, 1987, 1991 and 2002, 2003 and the Women in the past few.
1989 at the Civic Center and a bounced puck on the boards was very depressing.
I will not be at Excell on Saturday but if I did I would love to have a brew.
I will be listening to the game and keeping up on line.
When the Gopehrs win on Saturday I will be at Sensers on Sunday to watch the game against ND/SCSU.
Go Gophers

Few and far between?! Wow, didn't know getting to MORE Frozen Fours than any other team in the nation over the last 50 years constituted "few and far betwee"???

What must fans of all the other teams with far fewer Frozen Fours during the last 50 years be suffering through?! Must suck to be a men's hockey fan, of any team, eh?!

Oh, unless you are an 80 year old Michigan fan I suppose?!

See, what I remember about the 70's didn't leave an impression of "a couple great years in the 70s", but more of an incredible decade with 3 titles, two 2nd place finishes, and probably the largest collection ever assembled from one college team on an Olympic team, that also went on to win a Miraculous Gold Medal.

As for the 80s? you didn't list 81?! and only list 1987? The Woogster got the Gophers to 4 straight Frozen Fours in the 80s and did it with an All-Native Minnesotan lineup.

That whole All-Mn thing may not have translated into the most Natl titles, but it DID translate into the most US Hockey Hall of Famers, the most Olympians, and its not even close as we have TWICE as many as the 3rd place school and we could disappear from existence and it might take 20+ years for the 2nd place team to pass us. It's also resulted in record #s of native Minnesotans in the NHL, and has helped Minnesota become known as "The State of Hockey". It's helped SCSU and Mn-Mankato and UMD all move up in the world of collegiate hockey as well.

I was also able to throw some reality in the face of a Canadian hockey fan who said that US collegiate players may make up 33% of the NHL, but none of them could be considered "elite", by showing him that former Gophers alone, make up 16% of the Top 25 point scorers in the NHL right now.

So would it have been nice if the Gopher's had beaten Harvard in 89? Yeah. Would it have been nice if Woog would have recognized much sooner that the whole 100% Minnesotan roster thing was probably no longer the best thing for the program anymore? Yes, absolutely. And would it have been nice had Lucia figured out much sooner how to recruit guys the NHL didn't want to steal from us as soon as they could get em? Yes, again, absolutely. Would it have been nice to score first in the OT vs Yale last year and then possibly go on to win the Natl Title like Yale did instead? YES!!! But life sucks sometimes, reality sucks and sometimes great teams aren't going to be ones that win 3 titles in a row or something.

But despite all of that, UMn still has either the most of everything or is tied for 1st over the last 50 years. Most tourney appearances, most tourney wins, most players sent to Olympics, most players sent to NHL, tied with BU for most Frozen Fours & tied with BU for most Titles. And since BU isn't in the tourney this year, UMn could move into sole possession of 1st place in every category. They could also lose and BC could win another title and then we'd have a 3 way tie for most titles & most Frozen Fours and we'd have every reason to be jealous of BC. But BC is probably just as nervous about the possibility of losing early as we are.

It's a new era now, with the likes of Union and Quinnipiac and Yale and UMD and Miami of Ohio and SCSU and Mn-Mankato to contend with as well as the standards North Dakota, Wisconsin, Boston College, etc.. And yet here we are, ranked #1, seeded #1, tied for #1 with the fewest losses during the season, with a great goalie and yet still Gopher fans can be found who label their team's modern history as "few and far between"???

Just wondering if watching that Women's Gopher hockey team hasn't skewed your thinking a little?! lol

No Men's team is going to be able to dominate college hockey the way UMD women's team did, or like the UW women's team did, or like the Gopher Women's team has recently, not with the NHL willing and able to pluck the best from each team every year.

And I suppose my saying all of this is going to be another reason why Lady wore Black and maybe you as well hate your own fanbase?! lol You know what, there are all types, the quite types, the loud and outspoken types, the glass half empty types, the glass half full types, and if Gopher fans were all just alike, or if college hockey fans were all just alike, WOW, would that be boring.

I beg your pardon? I think I spaced out for about 45 minutes there...

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

What are you talking about, Slappy? My point was that we don't have banners for the other famous MN tourney losses, so why would we start now?

And my point was we don't lose that often, so if you wanted to hang banners for them you wouldn't have that many. So you should probably think of something else to hang banners for. But I'm sure the school will think of something.

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

ST. PAUL, Minn. _ Here in the self-proclaimed "State of Hockey," the storied program at the University of Minnesota has achieved and maintained what is often perceived as a "State of Grace."

With 35 NCAA Tournament appearances, 20 Frozen Fours and five national championships in the history books already, those who are convinced the Golden Gophers are college hockey's gold standard might not be far wrong.

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

I thought that write-up was pretty good, but this section made me smile a little:

Sophomore goalie Adam Wilcox is technically sound and athletic, but his goals-against average is only 1.91 (third in the nation) and his save percentage is only .933 (second in the nation). In other words, he hasn't stopped them all.

In other words, he doesn't have a 0.00GAA and 1.000 save percentage, so there's a chance!!!:p

I liked that too :)

Correct, 5 NCAA titles.

And a fan base that cares about hockey ;)

This is what you quoted, implying your stamp of approval...

It was an NCAA Tourney preview article, and the Gophers have 5 NCAA National Championships. Not exactly news.

Perhaps you should stick to posting funny pictures. You're actually good at that ;)

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

Yep. 5 National Championships.

Glad that's finally cleared up.

According to Ross Bernstein, the Gopher's have closer to a dozen National Titles. People can try to convince themselves that college hockey was invented in 1948, but that's just not true.

The University of Minnesota Hockey team was even given the opportunity to represent the United States at the Olympics in 1928, but they couldn't afford to send them, so they turned the invitation down.

Also, either 2 or 3 of the 4 candidates to be the namesake for the Hobey Baker Award were UMn people.

But yes, just 5 "NCAA" Titles.

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

God it must be embarrassing to be so desperate for another one or two banners to get to a number equal to your neighbors. Minnesota has a very good history: 5 is nothing to be ashamed about. I say embrace your 5ness.

5 NCAA titles is great. The little schtick you've got going with Gurt, not so much.
