West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

The Vikings and never said the Packers NEVER won Super Bowls nor did I say the Gophers NEVER won national championships while the teams in question existed. The cute comment made was directly to national championships vs. tournament wins.

You need to understand the context of the comment, Sweet Pea.

I was simply attempting to illustrate that in the more than 25 years that SCSU has been participating in D1 hockey, their success in the tourney has been, well, craptastic.

I mean, if the Vikings hadn't had a 25 year head start, SCSU would likely be the poster child for MN sports incompetence.

What NFL team do you root for that wasn't in existence when the Packers won Superbowls?

Irregardless of when the gophers won titles and whether SCSU played D-1 at the time, there's a Grand ****ing Canyon of difference between a program that's won 5 titles and a program that's won 3 total tourney games and no - zero, zilch, haven't even sniffed one - titles.

And Jan fan wonders why they can't escape their label...

PS - Of course there's also a big difference between 6 and 5, but we won't get into that here. :D:p

Well, well, well.

Gurt, the first guy rushing to defend the honor of the Gophers.

Keep this up and you may get one of those maroon caps with the gold ears and an audience with Wooger.

Since you went all grammar police on Gurt, let me help you. When you guys start whining about the Gophers, "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" is the understood subject.:D
It is pathetic how much Gopher fans love to dish it out but can't take it. Turning the mirror around to your team's recent struggles in the NCAA tournament is now "whining"? Please.

Just making sure that Jan remembers her place and it ain't at the Big Boy Table.

This made me smile. :)

Oh yeah and not to derail this with Packer talk (I didn't bring up the Packers btw) and the last thing I'll say about the subject as it relates to this thread is that I've been living here for a long, LONG time and have never once had a conversation with other Packer fans or fans of other teams where the championships from the 30s and 40s came up. Even my pops hasn't mentioned the Lombardi era since the early 90s.

Not saying that some fans maybe living on that side of the river don't hold it over your heads (hope that's reasonably grammatically correct - realize it's a run on but it's intentional), but I can't imagine why they'd need to. 1997 and 2010 weren't all that long ago. ;)

Um...you are. All you get is a chip and a chair. I'll be in Philly whether the Gophers are there or not. They have their shot and they have to win to get there. If your guys get there, they earned it and I will respect that. I like Motzko and I like the fact that there are a lot of Minnesota kids your team, I respect them. You guys whining...not so much.

Trust me, completely understand the context.

May be just a little off base on the incompetence comment. At least with the salary cap and draft, the Vikings are on a relatively level playing field in the NFL vs. how NCAA sports work. Their level of incompetence is untouchable in my opinion. I'll qualify that as a lifelong fan of that da** team and season ticket holder. Wolves are a very close second. And then we can talk.

On the hockey front, the Gophers clearly lead the way in this state on getting top talent and then follow that by other perennial top teams (No Dak, Wisconsin, out east schools, etc.). So as a program below that you have to find a way to get more out of less overall talent. Clearly that also leads to the problem of having top talent continually leaving early which causes a toll on continuity as well. Think that somewhat explains the struggles for the Gophers to get back to the national championship on a more frequent basis. Doesn't seem like that is as much of an issue this year leading to a better overall "team" which could definitely make a run.

The continuity piece of having kids play a full college career is where it seems the Huskies are making some progress recently. Last year's talented freshman group are having a good year this year and I doubt we'll see many of them not come back next year. This is not the Huskies of old where scoring was an issue and they relied on needing out-of-this-world goaltending to have a shot at winning. Could really use some better play in the net for sure.

Speaking of, can Wilcox just go pro already?

I'd rather see that Bob Morris guy win Saturday afternoon but in all likelihood the Gophers will be there on Sunday night. I'm hoping the Huskies will be as well and the chance to move the program forward will be there. And it would take an outstanding effort to make it back-to-back Frozen Fours for the Huskies.

You really think the current guys on SCSU are focusing on the overall school record or are they looking at the fact that as a lower seed last year, coming off a disappointing conference tournament and a regular season title, they made the Frozen Four.
Sounds pretty familiar to this year's situation, they know what to do to get there.
I also don't think Minnesota's current players give a crap about their titles considering they were in grade school when the Gophers last won one.
Histories before the current players got there means nothing.

The "small schools have to do more with less" angle may have been true 10+ years ago, but ever since the institution of a cap in the NHL, that has become less and less relevant.

The level of talent you get is far less relevant now days than how long you can get players to hang around, and the more talented the player, the less time they tend to hang around.

I'd consider that a great equalizer that is somewhat equivilant to the NFL salary cap you referred to. There has been more and more parity in college hockey in recent years.

I'm not complaining, as I think it's great for this sport, but I think the line between the haves and have nots in college hockey is turning increasingly grey.

CANT TAKE IT?!

Let me provide an analogy for you, Bo Peep.

Golden Gopher Hockey is the United States of college hockey.

Just without the immigration problems.

Equal parts admired and hated, we bestride our frozen world a colossus.

And like the United States, we suffer the slings and arrows of smaller "countries" for any number of slights, real or perceived. We suffer them at the same time we pay the bills that support the greater world of college hockey.

And all we ever ask for in return is the night game.

Go ahead. Dish it out. For SCSU, it's no worse than throwing a snowball at the Nimitz.

True, all of it.

And none of it germane to the topic of the original discussion.

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

At the risk of sounding like an annoyed SCSU fan...where did we get the reputation for "putting up banners for anything?" The only one that might be deemed extraneous would be the NCAA participation banner, however I'd say at least 80% of schools, including BC, Wisconsin and Denver, have one and at least we don't have individual banners for each NCAA appearance like CC, Miami, Bowling Green and others. UMD used to have individual banner, but switched to a participation banner in the move to Amsoil. It's also not like we have banners for each All- American and NHL player ( Mankato), in-season tournament titles (Quinnipiac), or lower-division accomplishments (Bemidji, who also has individual NCAA banners).

Hmm... maybe you're right. We need to be more inclusive with our banner mocking. Thanks for the heads-up. You can hang a banner for letting us know. :D

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

If I cared about the Gophers as much as SanTropez thinks we all do, I'd have hung myself 10 years ago.

Re: West Regional - Minnesota/Robert Morris & St. Cloud State/Notre Dame

All the Husky fans will need to bring their anti-glare snowmobile and ski goggles to protect their eyes from the those gold buckets.

I suppose lasers will have to be banned otherwise you could take out their whole bench.

They will have to put some warning signs up at the X.
