Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

Season is 18 days away.
Well since it's past time to start with the prognostications and the total BS people pull out I thought I'd put in my two cents. Looking at the schedules, BG has a very favorable start. They are at WMU to start but have mankato at home, Alaska at home, MTU at home, LSSU at home.

I'd say Mankato has to be the favorite. They have a tough schedule to start. St Cloud at home, At BU, which is a chance for the refs to screw the visitors, like they do every year to somebody, then at BG, Tech at home and At a resurgent NMU team. I still think they will be the class of the WCHA but they could start 0-3 if they are not careful.

Tech will be real good. They did lose a lot on defense and the goalie but I think they can replace those guys ok. the schedule is moderate. only 2 with Mankato, and BG, 4 with LSSU, 4 with Alaska, 2 with UAA.
NMU Is a dark horse to me. the New coach is bringing in a new look and though they lost some great scoring, I think they will surprise some people. They have 4 with LSSU, 4 with FSU, 4 with Huntsville, 4 with Mankato.
Huntsville is tough. I don't know much about the incoming class but they have good coaching and they always work hard.. they are on the road a lot at the beginning and home late. They have 4 with UAA, 4 with BSU, 4 with NMU, 4 with BG, 2 with FSU and 2 with Mankato and Tech. a recipe for a higher finish. I'd love to see them do well and fill the building a few times.
I know very little about the other teams, FSU, LSSU, BSU, etc.. it's a black hole out there to me.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

Has WCHA.tv come out with their pricing structure for the season yet? Any new "upgrades" to the system over last year?

I heard they were promising a lot more compared to last year's product... more lag, more freezing and more cost.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

The media conference call is this Monday (9/25/17). I would expect a lot of the unanswered questions out there to come to light then.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

Getting back to the main goal of this season - put more teams in the tourney. A thought came to me last night as I was browsing Ebay. Is is possible we can somehow "snipe" the NCAA tourney and just put our bids in at at the last second? I find that is the best way to win the bids on Ebay.

Just a thought,
Ryan

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

To me it seems that last season started with a lot of clutch and grab penalties being called and the play opened up. After Christmas it seems they stopped making the call and the clutch and grab got worse. Will the WCHA start the season calling it tight again and then let off at the end?

I think the only guarantee in this league is that the officiating will be consistently inconsistent.

I can't count the number of times this has happened over the years. An early crackdown on interference and holding just disappears as the season progresses.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

I noticed that Mankato was ranked #1 in the "2017-18 Mankato Free Press WCHA Men's Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll" however UAH did not rank #1 in the "2017-18 UAHHockey.com WCHA Men's Hockey Preseason Media Poll". Clearly we have established early on which poll sponsor places more local bias into their polling results.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

Some basic stats that I hope are reasonably accurate. Lost scoring is mostly seniors with a few adjustments if I read about them and they were material. I didn’t do a year-to-year roster comparison (I’m retired but not totally without a life). Goalies are just a guess. We all know that special teams win/lose games, but seeing it in black/white sure drives it home.
