NCHC commish Josh Fenton notes (in the mid-40s time mark or so) that there are some conversations happening, but mostly instigated by WCHA.
I don't think there's much said here that we wouldn't have assumed ourselves. The idea isn't being dismissed outright, but the idea would have to find a way to make money (there are more pockets to split the dough if you combine), and there was a point made about the early-day HEA tourney event combined with ECAC not lasting.

Sounds like the commish is optimistic that the b1g and the WCHA are making progress on joining forces for 2017. Personally it would be good for both leagues.

I wonder if the Bi6(7) will become the second conference to eliminate team(s) after the regular season ends when Notre Dame joins? I can't see them having a 7 team conference tourney.

Even with just two leagues you're likely going to end up with one or more of the following:
Best case scenario I could come up with would be using one facility, each conference brings only four teams to town:
Thursday - Conference Semi-finals #4 vs #1 4pm / 8pm
Friday - Conference Semi-finals #3 vs #2 4pm / 8pm
Saturday - Conference #1 Finals 4pm*
Saturday - Conference #2 Finals 8pm*
* Book this arrangement for two years and for year two the time slots swap. Each conference gets the late time slot one year.

- 10am face-off for some games
- A tourney that takes 4 or more days to complete

There are quite a few options:

2) Change it to campus sites first round, top seed gets a bye. 2 thru 7 play best of three.
3) Final Five format. Top three get byes, 4 thru 7 play best of three.
4) All seven making the tournament format, playing three games Day 1 with only the top seed getting a bye
5) 7th place eliminated, 3-6 play campus sites, 1 and 2 get byes to semis.

Thursdays are terrible for attendance.
I really only see this as being viable as a money-making one-facility venture if all four semis happen on Friday. The early games will still have terrible attendance, but better than they would have on a Thursday afternoon.

This is almost what Hockey East and the ECAC did for Hockeyfest, but to be fair the league semifinals were the same day. Hockey East had their semifinals on the first day and the ECAC had their's on the second day. Year One the ECAC had the late championship game and Year Two Hockey East had the late championship game.

You'll be lucky if the two teams show up for an 8am game... You're not going to have four games in one day at a single facility, even with a single ticket that won't require the building to be cleared between games. That's hockey from 8am to midnight assuming none of the game go into overtime and you stay on schedule.

Is there an area other than the Twin Cities where there are two non-collegiate arenas with the capacity in close proximity (10 miles apart or so) that could be used as the basis for something this? Even here, with the X in St. Paul and Target Center in Minneapolis, there are logistics involved that would lead one or more of these leagues to simply abandon the idea after year one and go it alone. The NCHC is least likely to enter into this agreement, given they've had the best attendance numbers already, and they're already contracted with the Target Center.

Portland, OR has the Moda Center and Memorial Coliseum next door to each other. Both have ice plants and the Moda Center is NHL-capable.
Not that any one of these leagues would have their postseason tourney in Portland. Although it would be a way more fun destination than Grand Rapids.

If we're picking postseason sites with multiple rinks that no one wants to show up to, may I suggest Toledo? Since no one would be attending the Ice House and Tam-O-Shanter seem logical sites. Wouldn't cost the league much. For fun you could hang out in the bars near the Jeep plant when the shifts change. Or head on out to Toledo Express Airport and enjoy the peace and quiet associated with no flights. Huntington Center would be such a waste of seats. What am I saying...Toledo would be a waste. And before any native Toledoans jump down my throat for trashing their town, I was born and raised there. And escaped...

Just reading the tea leaves but NCHC isn't interested. So you'd have just the two leagues.
Certainly it would mean a lot of money saved. But consider, the championship games have to be played on saturday. So far so good. The semi's, each league has 2 games on friday. . I can't see them playing 4 games in one day. Maybe, but more likely they stretch it out another day.
in other words the big would have to have the first round games at campus sites, or have games on like weds. (Which I doubt the NHL team would be ok with.) I wonder, if since they have 7 teams now, they will have fewer non con games and thus get done like everyone else.( A week sooner than before. That would allow for the playoff switch.)

Because I just realized today that such a place totally exists.
What if I said that there's a chance that there could be a ~16000 seat arena and a 9700 seat arena that are not only in the same city, but within three blocks of each other, fairly central in the footprint of the B1G, NaCHo and the nWCHA, had a lot of bars/restaurants nearby AND was in an area that could handle Frozen Four crowds?
Because I just realized today that such a place totally exists.
