WCHA Preseason Chatter

Timothy A

Let's go RED!
Not wanting to turn the UW thread into a WCHA discussion....

Returning goals:
UW 141
UM 104
OSU 95
BSU 65
St. CL 52
UMD 52
MSU 39

Returning points:
UW 377
UM 266
OSU 229
BSU 165
UMD 116
MSU 105
St. Cl 101

Maybe someone else can add up returning games played, that would be interesting.

UMD will be a case study in how far can a goalie carry a team unless their recruiting class is like OSU's was last year, a very impressive returning scoring of 92, nearly as much as UMD's entire team.

Do these totals include the goals scored in 2016-17 by players (like Kelly Pannek and Sarah Potomak) who did not play last season due to Olympic/National team commitments?

Minnesota State women's hockey team hopes to raise the bar

Corbin Boyd: “If we lose, we’re going to be (upset) about it. We’re not going to be OK with a loss, like, ‘Well, it was a close game.’ You know, we still lost. So we have a different mentality going into to this year for sure.”

I haven’t followed Mankato much but they seem to get their fair share of in state talent. The SSM goalie who just won u19 national championship as well as several recently announced talented young recruits. Will be interesting to see how they develop over the next few years.

Mine include the goals from the previous seasons for the Olympians.

Re: WCHA Preseason Chatter

Having seen a fair amount of the incoming WCHA future stars (who play HS and summer hockey in MN) I would rank them like this:

1a. Gophers a clear (Heise, Oden, Ostertag)
1b. UMD (Hughes, Linser, Flaherty, Hanley)
The rest after a big separation
3a. OSU (Bizal)
3b. Mankato (Butorac) Looking good the next couple of years...
5. Bemidji (Verkerke, Moser)
6. Wisconsin (zero MN HS recruits I am aware of)
7. St Cloud (zero MN HS recruits I am aware of)

Yes, mine do. Not sure why Tim’s don’t match. Some of it may be due to transfers and players who decided not to return. One such took her single goal last year from UMD to MSU (not sure how she is able to play immediately...different thread tho)

Re: WCHA Preseason Chatter

Here's a fascinating situation. Heise is the heavy favorite for ROTY, and that does make sense. The Ice Garden doesn't have her listed in the top 25 players under 25 on the planet. Shirley got 1 vote for ROTY and she's listed as the 12th best player under 25. For reference Pankowski was listed as #21 and Clark was listed as #12. Something has to give there.

Shirley is a nice player, but IMO she's not #12 any more than the kid for Northeastern is in the top 5. I wouldn't trade A. Potomak for Shirley, I know that.

So the Ice Garden, as much as we want to love them, doesn't have much of a clue? I think they are spot on. :)

Re: WCHA Preseason Chatter

Unfortunately, I think that Curl is going to have a very nice career for you, but I didn't check with the Ice Garden, so I could be wrong.

Mankato definitely has upgraded their talent. Some top notch freshman forwards as good as anyone in addition to the goalie. And I’m not even a Mankato fan.

If Shirley = nice and Curl = very nice, what does Webster = ?

If you notice, those labels were applied in two different categories. I thought that you understood enough Math to know that you can't place them side by side and act like they are a relative ranking. Player and career are not the same thing. To introduce Webster at this point would likely confuse you even more.:(

Re: WCHA Preseason Chatter

So I don't want to be a total cheapskate here but if anyone has a FloHockey login they'd be willing to share and save me the THIRTY DOLLARS it'll cost me to watch BC this weekend I would love to have it lol

On the other hand, 30 bucks to see your all star squad might be a bargain...;)
