WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

I can't wait until the next Chasing MacNaughton is out. You'll hear me react to Tech's recent swoon, and not in gloating way.

Oh, and once you listen, you'll ask, "Is Geof defeated?" Yep.

Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit

...I really enjoyed listening to Ryan Johnson. He sounded intelligent.
When you post stuff on Internet message boards there is always a chance it ends up on the opposing team's bulletin board. In this case, there is a good chance it ends up in my signature or on my mom's refrigerator...

He certainly did. He's definitely done his research into the jerseys. I would love to be able to do similar for NMU, but just haven't committed some free time to start. Collecting game worn jerseys has been fun, but I don't know if I could bring myself to flip jerseys like he does. About 80% of my collection are jerseys I would never want to move, the rest are jerseys that I'm not tied to fully, but they still mean a little bit to me and I wouldn't want to move.
I started with a similar thought process. I acquired more and more and would rarely let anything go. First I just wanted MTU jerseys, then I started collecting pro game worn jerseys (NHL, AHL, IHL, ECHL, etc) of Tech alumni. However I found there was really no secondary market for anything from the pro leagues, unless you wanted to sell it down the road for 50% less than you paid, which is a poor long term strategy.

Later, I wanted to collect one jersey from each WCHA team and that helped me make contacts with college teams in other conferences. This is what really launched my passion for collecting ALL of the D-I teams. Yes, there are some schools that make a killing selling their stuff to their fans (North Dakota - $400+ for a jersey that was never worn, $500-$1500 for used) but most programs just can't or don't want to deal with selling their jerseys for one or more reasons:
  • Their fans have no interest in stinky old jerseys
  • They don't even know their fans might want their old jerseys
  • They don't want to take the time to answer a dozen questions over the phone before they sell one, if ever
  • They are paranoid of the NCAA rules regarding the use of student athletes to generate "profit"

After 25 years, I've discovered that most people collect pro jerseys for the name on the back. As soon as that player leaves the team or someone better comes along, the previous "hot" player is forgotten and the jersey has very little value. However in the collegiate market, I've found there is much more loyalty. Once someone likes a particular program, they tend to always support that program (alumni are the best example). It really doesn't matter to them the name on the back, if there is one at all. They are happy to have something old or new as long as it is their team.

As an engineer I find it interesting to see all the different styles and concepts for the jerseys and of course the thrill of the chase trying to get something new and unique. I have gotten to meet thousands of really passionate hockey fans over the years and enjoyed their stories as well as swapping jerseys with them. However I've also realized that I can't keep them all so now I enjoy them for as long as I can. But if it means more to someone else, I'm ok with letting it go and just looking forward to the next box that shows up on my porch, ready to teach me something new about the fabric(s) of the game.

Thanks! It was fun. I think the crew expected me to let them have it over the loss to UAH. I can't get excited over a 2nd win in 28 games, man.

Hell, during the 4-win JR years, I would get excited about ties.

I jokingly made a comment to Tim that having you on after your win would be rubbing salt in my wounds. Thanks for taking it easy on me.

Well, after 12 in 17-18 and 8 in 18-19, being where we are is just such a kick in the face.

and Ryan, keep doing what you are doing. it's great to learn how it all works. Now all you need is a proper race car.

"I still have a Camelbak that tastes slightly of tequila."

Gonna be hard to top that quote.

I want to add some context to a couple of things:

Regarding the video stream: As I understand it, we've got the Havoc organization helping us with the video production. I've let our SID know about the feedback (such as the over-use of the videoboard graphics), and he'll have to pass that on to the Havoc. Early on in the season, they would use that ice-level camera every time UAH brought the puck into the offensive zone, which was awful, but they've stopped doing that, so hopefully they'll take the graphics feedback and improve. The center ice camera is typically better than it was during the Tech series. We were expecting it to be fixed on Saturday when the Havoc played, but it was not, so they need to fix it for this weekend. While it is far from perfect, if you've watched our streams before, it's still the best it's been since we joined the WCHA.

I haven't heard anything about the new facility being quashed by the UA Board of Trustees. It hasn't even been a year since Dr. Altenkirch unveiled the proposal, and Dr. Dawson (the new president) said the whole development (remember that it's more than just an arena) told me last September that it will take years to come to fruition. I was told that they will be hiring a master developer to recruit companies who would locate in the development and that they will be eliciting private support for the project. I'll get an update during the offseason.

often times in these situations, the arena comes first...but I do appreciate all the feedback. The feed is better than I have seen in years past and certainly not the worst in the WCHA, by any means but those graphics get a bit annoying especially during a replay review. When hunting for a moment from the 3rd period to record, I noted one stoppage where the graphic ran almost constantly for 3 or 4 minutes.

Yeah, that was very annoying, and I hope they start realizing what it's like for a viewer. By the way, I do enjoy the podcast every week, even though the Chargers hardly give you anything to talk about. :)

Wow, 41 official goals scored tonight and then an additional on scored in the 3 on 3 second OT!

We're recording the podcast tonight. If anyone has questions, we'll have Austin Monteith from the Bemidji Pioneer on as our guest this week.
