WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Looking at that non con schedule, it's tough. There aren't many games you could say are gimmes with the exception of arizona state. But having said that, games against the NCHC or HE I would think are particularly important. FSU has a tough schedule out of conference and for BG beating Clarkson is tough. At the same time, if Huntsville can find a way past CC and UND, or at least a split, it would be huge for everyone.
BG was able to tie and beat Clarkson on the road last year (2-2, 5-4). One would hope that we would be able to improve on that with a sweep in our own barn this year, but you never know until you play the game. We certainly didn't dominate them last year...

Okay, you can doubt us if you want, but 1) we didn't pick up stride until halfway through the season and still made the playoffs 2) CARMINE GUERRIERO (a Tech fan should know this) 3) it's probably Carmine's last season, so he's going to be looking to impress the scouts 4) we lost next to nothing offensively while getting some guys in from juniors that can perform. Note that our freshmen, like most, got better and productive as the season went on, especially because our minimal depth got them plenty of ice. This is our second full class of guys recruited by this staff against the WCHA, and our third overall after the program's demise was no longer imminent.

Doubt us if you will, though.

We don't talk about Carmine. We don't like Carmine. He keeps us from the KBC

I'm actually very surprised some team didn't make Carmine an offer he couldn't refuse.

I don't expect him to stay after this year. I think the reason that he's still around is that he's 5'11". That's probably the only thing that he didn't improve in the offseason.

Shine, Sooth, Siemer, Nowick, Handon, Payne, Diamantoni & Salminen all return at Forward for the Cats and should occupy spots among the top 3 lines for NMU. Adair, Rose & Purpur are returnees who should see plenty of ice time. Newcomers Loggins and Starzynski are the first year Cats expected to see the most ice time. However, if the injury bug hits NMU like it did last year, others will need to be ready. But as the roster stands now, there won't be a ton of minutes for the freshmen.

I also see there are a few other names absent from the roster this year. Thank God. I think there will be some "addition by subtraction" that will also benefit the team. I really can't believe with what Walt put up with for two years to ice full rosters.

2013-14 was an anomaly in my opinion. I don't recall ever seeing the league finish like that with two run away title contenders (each 10+ points ahead of 3rd), one team with no chance (almost 20 pts behind 9th) and the whole rest of the league (7 teams within 6 pts) in a huge log jam. In most seasons, if you get more than 50% of the possible points, you're on home ice the first round. Very rarely does that not turn out to be the case over the course of history, however with the WCHA dropping one first round series that number will creep up because 5th place now goes on the road during the 1st round.

If I recall, the CCHA used to have that a lot. The old "Pencil in Michigan/Michigan State at the top, Lake State at the bottom, and throw darts for the rest of the order."

Interesting article, and seems to be pretty spot on.

I think he dogged UAF's goalies a little too hard though...John Keeney played 27 games his freshman year (the last year of the CCHA) and went 13-11 with a .909 save percentage. He can play, but lost his spot in the rotation as Cahill became the guy for the last two years. I think a lot of us are pulling for Keeney to have a good senior year and go out on top. Davis Jones has talent but was wildly inconsistent last year...he'd pitch a shutout on a Friday and then let in 4 or 5 the next night. If he can become more consistent in a good way this year that will be a big plus for our team. My guess is Jenks' job will be to watch and learn this year, but our staff tends to play whoever plays the best in practice so who knows.

"It was a tough transition year for the Lakers in their first season under Whitten where they only managed eight wins and an 11th place finish in the WCHA"

He even placed LSSU below teams that don't exist. You have to be REALLY bad to place 11th in a 10 team league. Do you have to finish with negative points to get that placing?

Maybe the Lakers were demoted to 11th because on many nights they played 5 freshmen defensemen.

All at the same time?

Also, Charles Williams has junior eligibility, I think. I believe he took a redshirt last season due to an injury.

That's too many men on the ice, unless you pulled the 'tender.

(you missed the cheap one-liner in the previous post)

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I think that the team pass should've been $79. That's not much gap to the full league.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I'm shocked at how high that price is. The NCHC has two less teams and it's 95 dollars for a league pass. That's 35 dollars less than the WCHA. If you're lucky like me and reupped with NCHC.tv you'll pay 90 bucks...40 dollars less. Seems odd that the WCHA is charging so much more.

Although as I type all of this out I realize the WCHA has four more league games. So that plays into it as well.

EDIT: I also remembered that DU isn't a part of the NCHC package.

So perhaps the price difference isn't so startling. :o

Yeah, the price per game is pretty okay. While I get the price point of "I'm only paying for my team's game", you have to ask if you'll get more subscribers for $TEAM's games than you would normally get of $TEAM's fans to pay for the league pass — and then, is the break-even point where that differential brings in more revenue? Oh well.

That could also be the reason for lack of scoring last season. Playing without any forwards on the ice really cuts down on the offensive chances. Most teams endorse the line combination of 3 forwards, 2 d-men and a goalie as the most effective choice. But hey, they say everything starts with great defense so who am I to argue.
