Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

Who owns the Philadelphia Flyers?

And we wonder why the NHL has not stepped in?

Stepped into what?

I know ESPN might never ever show college hockey games outside of the frozen four, but again, this might make them think twice about it...maybe cover them in post game shows, and definitely not be hesitant towards showing college hockey highlights on ESPN's top 10 plays of the week/day.

What are your thoughts?

They show games on ESPNU. That's all we can really hope for as far as the ESPN networks go. They do occassionally show highlights of college hockey games in the top 10, they were #3 and #1 a week ago.

Simply put, the Flyers are owned by Comcast-Spectator. Comcast owns Versus. Do you really think the NHL is going to tell one of its owners to do something that the owner perceives is not in its best interest?

We're screwed.

Oh yeah, the NHL wouldn't do that. I don't think the NHL would have much clout even if Comcast didn't own the Flyers. Comcast and it's network (VS) were the only ones who would take the chance on post-lockout NHL sadly, and I don't think there's anyone else itching to take it up. The NHL needs it's games on TV to be at all relevant, so they wouldn't want to form any kind of rift at this point.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

My "Sports Tier" package gets me several Fox College Sports channels, and they have college hockey pretty much every weekend.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

From what I've read over the months, Comcast is the one with the problem as far as I can tell. Obviously we all love hockey here -- but outside of the NHL Versus has precious little programming other than a few college football games. Its appeal is, in the big picture, incredibly limited.

Directv doesn't seem to have any issue putting Versus on something like the "sports tier" or Choice Xtra packages alongside the Fox regional stations and such -- but Comcast is steadfastly refusing to budge on that front. They want Versus to be available to everyone as part of the "basic" package it was on and have Directv pay higher fees accordingly (which are all passed on to subscribers).

I don't blame Directv at all for refusing to cave into that. It sucks we're getting screwed, but Versus has very little appeal outside hockey fans and if I weren't a hockey fan, I wouldn't want to have to pay extra every month for its (very) meager programming.

So why hasn't the NHL pushed Comcast and DirecTV to settle their dispute? If DirecTV is dark for the playoffs including the Stanley Cup, who is going to look stupid? IMO everyone will blame the NHL.

Why? When the Patriots were to play the Giants for a run at 16-0, the game was on the NFL network -- which very few got at the time. Due to the interest in the game, the NFL stepped in and gave the game to every network so the nation could watch it. Savvy marketing? Yep! Does the NHL have the common sense to do the same thing? The world wonders.

Yeah, but who OWNS the NFL Network? That's why they could "step in." It would be much harder for the NHL to do so. And the NHL wouldn't exactly be happy if DirecTV put their sport on the optional sports tier, but at this point they might need to nicely ask Comcast to accept that.

It's true. The other stuff on VS. makes me laugh. Comcast should strike some other sort of deal to move their hockey broadcast crew to NHL Network (since it seems like all NHLN does is pick up other feeds for games currently) and change VS. back to OLN because no one other than hockey fans seem to know it exists.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are it will never happen on a national network, because it doesn't belong on a national network. College hockey is a small market even in its core states. A regional network like NESN carrying games with big local interest is the ceiling, because under any other circumstances the network affiliates would get better ratings by running a test pattern.

(Thankfully), there is simply no way to grow the sport.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

Not necessarily, depends how smart you are about it. I signed up for Direct and it came WITH 2 of the premium movie tiers (we picked HBO/Show), also with a free season of NFL Ticket.

The thing they don't tell you about NFL ticket is that it is an auto renewal, so you call them up when the second season rolls around, tell them that you don't need it because you have season tickets to your closest available market (Cincinnati Bengals perhaps...), so it will be of little to no use. They wind up marking down the package to ~$50, and you get to watch any game you want for the whole season.

^^^This^^^

Just need to know how to work the system with D*. Comcrap is pure evil.

It would seem Directv is being disengenuous here though. If you read the statement they have posted on Versus (channel 603), it says:
"Comcast, our largest competitor, has forced us to pull down this channel. Comcast charges us fees to air Versus, and they are now demanding unfair and outrageous increase in those fees. In these difficult economic time, we do not want to pass this increase on to you, our valued customer, so we are standing firm in the negotiations on your behalf."

It would appear Directv is leaving out a key fact. It is they that initiated Versus' move to the sports tier which would decrease its availablity to Directv subscribers (e.g., subscribers would need to pay for the sports tier to view Versus). I can't say I blame Comcast to want more from Directv if Directv is going to bring it less viewers. I think its wrong for Directv to blame Comcast when it is they that initiated this whole thing. So if they're going to put up a statement on Versus, they need to be honest about their role in this mess. Trust me, I'm no fan of Comcast. I've had its cable service and that's why I have Directv now, but I don't believe they just woke up one day and demanded more for Versus from Directv (as the Directv statement would have us believe).

If there are any class-action lawyers out there, might be a good case worth looking into.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

I miss the days of NHL hockey on ESPN/ESPN2. That's where the NHL belongs. Its funny how "the smartest guys in the room" can make such dumb decisions.

um, no one watched? the espn ratings are bizarre.. bowling, poker, and worlds strongest man used to get better ratings, plus they are cheaper to film

Plus the time of day that the NHL is on is primetime about 7-10 EST. How often do you see those programs on ESPN during primetime?

Go figure...ESPN likes it when people actually tune in.

Poker is on prime time Tuesday nights for about 20 weeks.

Re: Versus on Directv - Enough is Enough!!!

I can't say I blame Comcast to want more from Directv if Directv is going to bring it less viewers. I think its wrong for Directv to blame Comcast when it is they that initiated this whole thing.

But that's not the big hang-up as I understand it.

Comcast wants Directv to keep Versus on the same subscriber tier it's always been on, yes. That we agree on. But that's not the main issue as I've understood it -- and it's something Comcast conveniently leaves out of all their press releases.

Comcast wants to charge Directv the SAME money per-subscriber that they charge Dish Network for carrying Versus.

The whole problem is that Dish doesn't have Versus on a "basic" package -- it's on a higher, more premium package of some kind. That enables Dish to offset Versus' higher per-subscriber costs (which most feel are too high anyway given the channel's ratings and overall programming) by charging a premium for the package it's in. Given how low the interest is in Versus overall, that seems to be the most equitable thing to do -- but Comcast isn't allowing Directv to do that.

What Comcast wants is for Directv to keep Versus in the basic package it was in -- but charge Directv as if it's in a premium package, when it isn't. Ultimately, under Comcast's demands, one article guessed that Directv could pay up to 20% more per-customer than Dish Network does -- can you blame them for not agreeing to go along with that deal?

I'm not going to cry a river for Directv either when two big corporations go at it, but to me, seems like Comcast is the one making the most demands for a channel that has, in the big picture, very limited appeal.

What makes the most sense is for Comcast to allow Directv to move Versus to the premium Sports Pack (which is where it ought to be, most hockey fans like us already have it, and you'd have a hard time justifying Versus being on a "basic" package given its paltry ratings) like they allow Dish Network to do. Then Comcast gets their fees. But Comcast, apparently, wants to have their cake and eat it too -- they want the most viewers, while also charging a premium for them. At this point in time with a channel that has very, very small ratings outside of the NHL I'd say they're the ones demanding more than Directv is.

And it might be more complicated than that -- Directv and Comcast have been bickering over some of the regional sports networks' contracts, so that's probably tied in to some degree.

Either way, we're all the big losers in the end. :(

On ESPN2?

On one of the ESPN's. I think ESPN1 has it Tuesday and it re-airs in prime time on Thursday on ESPN2. The older WSOP events are relegated to late night.

When I'm at the gym around that time, it always seems like ESPN has a college basketball game on. They never have the deuce on so I'm not sure what they have on. The poker places may be buying the time from ESPN. Most times I've seen poker are during the afternoons and late evenings.
