Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

After post below, looked at latest PWR. UNH and UVM are in a 4-way tie for 9th. Still think UNH has more skill, and is at home, but, stating the obvious, both teams will have much to play for. Should be a great weekend!!!

SiouxSports has UVM at 12th, and UNH at 10th.

Either way, UVM has had a rough go of it. The meltdown against MC is a tough pill to swallow. UVM will give UNH all they want if they take it as a wake up call, if they continue to sleep UNH should be able to pad their stats. I hate to say it, but I'm predicting sweep for UNH. Anything can happen but unless Madore, who has played well, can step up and pitch a shutout the Catamounts are a sinking ship.

Gray repped for "If UNH doesnt sweep its because UNH is sleeping, not UVM. *******."
Not sure where this came from regarding my post? But apparently someone has some reading comprehension issues.......

When I was active on USCHO threads last fall, I put IrishWildcat on my ignore list. Thanks, Rock, for quoting him; I’ll keep him there. But I’m then hypocritical if I don’t make a prediction, even if not worth much. I’m no doubt over-influenced by wanting so badly for the Wildcats to do well.

Expect UNH to take 4 points this weekend. It won’t be easy, despite UVM injuries. The “Other Cats” should come into the Whitt hungry for points, and should provide determined opposition. If UNH is going anywhere in post season tourneys, now is the time to stabilize the team defense, improve the PP and PK, and get more goals from the 2nd and 3rd lines. UVM is a test for those advancements, and an opportunity to show they can beat opposing players to loose pucks.

Most of all, looking forward to a weekend of excellent hockey, from both teams.

PP will be the key......last 2 weekends, Maine and PC the games coulds have been put away with timely PPs goals.....time for a change in the PP

I liked what I saw out of UNH late in the game on Friday. If they keep up that effort consistently this weekend, I think they'll do well against the "other" Cats.

UNH may not have scored on the PP against Providence, but they generated pretty solid pressure, kept the puck on the zone, and got some chances. They keep that up, and the puck will start going in. I only really get frustrated with the power play when they can't keep the puck in, don't control the play, and give up short-handed opportunities.

The pairwise is so crazy, how do we take only 1 point from Merrimack and move up?

Because it's not solely dependent on how your team does.

This will be an interesting weekend for the UVM Cats. Lots happening within the team. Wahs Stacey (9 goals and 9 assists in 19 games) out with high ankle sprain as indicated on team thread; Chris McCarthy has to sit out Friday game with a DQ; Justin Milo, 2nd leading scorer on team is released earlier today from the team by coaching staff; Jay Anctil, a 4th liner was injured on Saturday with probably a serious upper body injury (he left game early and did not return).

Not sure they have enough players to dress 4 lines unless one of the D is moved to a forward slot.

I just hope they show some pride and make the weekend series a respectable showing.

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

Back when the whit was under construction I had heard the bball team may play some games there - has this ever happened?

The last time the squeakball team played in the Whitt was in 2001. It was for a game vs Florida, where over 7200 came to see former Concord High star Matt Bonner, who played for the Gators.

UNH lost (duh) 108-56, with a Gator racing down the court in the final seconds for one last basket.

This sounds like there was something else going on. Pretty drastic move to boot someone off the team for "inconsistent effort and play". However, "a lack of commitment to the team" seems to indicate off-ice troubles. I don't know much about Sneddon, though, so maybe that's really all it is. Perhaps he viewed Milo's attitude as detrimental to the rest of the team, so getting rid of him helps the locker room, and maybe even wakes/fires up a team teetering on the brink of the basement steps.

we can only hope because losing your second leading scorer off of an offensively challenged team sure doesn't sit well in my Gutt. I hope Sneddon is right on this one....Milo seemed like a good kid and hockey player.

Sidenote: Red Sox play by play announcer Don Orsillo will be calling Fridays game on NESN with former Bruin Craig Janney.

Carry on

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

I'm not making any predictions except that if UNH doesn't sweep, it's a lost weekend. It's too late in the season, and there's too much on the line for them not to win both, unless they don't have the gear, in which case, it'll be an early spring for all of us anyway.
In all candor, Butler, LeBlanc, Foster, et. al., will get the four points.

I gotta think sweep but considerning UNH is 2-7-2 against teams currently 16th or higher in the PWR, compared to 5-5-1 for UVM I wouldn't say it is a given by any means.

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

UNH squeaks out a win although they were vastly outplayed. Same problems with getting bottled up in their own zone. They need to work this out if they are to make some noise in the Tournament.

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

A description of UNH's 3rd period and OT: 21+ minutes of ineptitude followed by a goal.

Foster looked terrible at times, but he really kept UNH in the game in the third. Hopefully he can play like that for the entire game tomorrow (and yes, it would help if the team could actually clear the puck).

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

I think the team redefined "winning ugly" tonight. That said, glad to see them take the 2 points.

Ugly yes, I am also glad UNH escaped with 2 pts. in OT tonight, just like the Merrimack game. Credit to VT. they were physical and cashed in on the numerous rebounds. Matched each UNH goal to the end of regulation. The UNH's defense was less than useless tonight (See Kipp = 2 VT goals). Need to do a better job clearing the puck out of our end of the ice , and controling the neutral zone. Note to coaches and players, Vt shows, it likes to have two to three players on the puck at all times, look for the open skater.

Matt... how about UNH not turning the puck over all game and then standing around watching UVM cycle with it endlessly? That would be nice. When UNH decides they want to skate, they can be a very dangerous team....but then they go through lapses (like big chunks of time last night) where, for some reason, they just stop skating and taking the man.

Also, the PP is brutal. I know, I know... beating a dead horse here, but there is no reason that our PP % should be around 16%. That is just poor. They MUST get more production out of their special teams (not just the PP, but the PK needs to be better as well) down the stretch if they have any aspirations of doing well in the post-season --- both in the H.E. playoffs and the NCAAs.

Re: Vermont @ UNH - Cat Fight @ the Whit

One thing I noticed last night was the lack of flow during the game. I thought the TV interruptions were brutally long and way too frequent.

The difference between a televised game and one that's not is stark. I know that there was OT, but last night's game took close to 2 1/2 hours while a couple of games earlier in the year logged in at just over 2 hours. The last game in Providence, if it had not gone to OT, would have been under 2 hours.

But you can't have it both ways. When the Wildcats are on the road, you of course want to see them on TV, meaning that fans at the game suffer what we went through last night. I guess it depends on which side of the TV your on.

BTW, when I watched the replay this morning, I was impressed by Don Orsillo. Since he's a real professional, I was not surprised that he got all the names right (not sure about his version of Cullity), but he had some pretty good on-the-fly insights of the game. On the other hand, who does Brendan Walsh know to get his gig? He is absolutely brutal.
