Vermont 2022-23: New Jerseys, New Attitude

I will say, so far this season we're beating the "bad" opposition but losing to the "good". the first step to improvement is winning those games against the "bad" lol

Also, I know it's wayyyy too early to look at PWR, but UVM is apparently #33 in that right now. look after some truly wretched years where we've been stapled to the bottom 10 i'll take what i can get haha

Sweep! Nice weekend. UNH is bad, but you've gotta beat the bad teams in front of you.

So very true! One can't beat cupcakes, when we (UNH)are already annointed as the official Hockey East Cupcake for the 22-23 season.

Congrats on the sweep. We'll be lucky to win 10 games this season, the way that it's progressing.......

I get a kick out of whoever's writing the headlines for the stories on the UVM athletics website. For the game last night, it's "#9 Providence Holds Off Vermont Friday Night." Really? Providence held us off? That would imply the game was tight and went down to the wire with Providence holding us off to eke out a win. No, Providence won 4-zip. It was an easy win.

Before the game it was "Men's Hockey Carries Win Streak to #9 Providence for Weekend Set." Again, really??? We won two games in a row, that's a win streak?

By all accounts Woodcroft is an exceptional hockey coach. Hopefully that's the case, but frankly I'm not seeing it. Why, why, why are we almost completely incapable of scoring goals??? We scored a total of 3 goals in a win and a tie against Colgate. We scored a total of 4 goals in a win and overtime win against UNH last weekend. We've been blanked twice by Lowell. We scored 2 in two losses to Northeastern and 2 in two losses to UConn. We got blanked by Providence last night and, if you look on the UVM website under schedule, we're going to get blanked by Providence 4-0 again tonight (haha, I'm not making this up).

Sure one can argue it's lack of talent, we don't have sharpshooters, we don't have goal scorers, etc., but that doesn't stop other untalented teams from scoring. For example, look at Lindenwood a school I'd never heard of until last summer when they appeared on our schedule. They scored 4 in a loss at Minnesota, 4 in a loss at Michigan, 7 in a win against Air Force, 5 in a win at Army, and 3 in a loss at Wisconsin last night. I left out 7 in a win at Bentley, because we scored 6 against them at home. Anyway, some of these results are against legit, quality teams on the road. Is Lindenwood more talented (well we'll have the answer to that soon enough) or is it something about their coaching that enables them to score goals? Whenever I hear an out-of-town broadcast of a game involving UVM, the announcers are always saying we're a very disciplined team. Perhaps we shouldn't be quite so disciplined. Maybe we should open things up and play exciting, entertaining hockey, and score some goals. I don't have the answers of course, but this is just a thought.

7 Road games this year and only 5 goals. They have not scored a road goal in over 230 minutes. PP o for 13 in that stretch.

Well we got some goals tonight, that's at least *a* step. (Especially that PPG)

Got dominated, but Autio was very strong most of the night and the offense was able to finish the chances it got. Take the point and run. The next two months or so are all winnable games imo.

Army is just as bad as the Holy Cross (not Bentley) team that we smacked 6-0 at the Gutt, and Air Force isn't so good these days either. The rest are Big Ten teams, and the Big Ten does not play a lick of defense - in terms of GA every team in that league is either in line with us or way worse, but they have actual firepower

Oh you’re right, it was HC and not Bentley. Anyway my argument admittedly wasn’t airtight. It was more to point out, out of complete frustration, that even a newly minted D1 squad can score some goals.

Continuing the pattern of "beat teams on par or worse than us, lose to teams better than us"....which is a step up from "lose to everyone."

Gutsy effort from a shorthanded squad.

Come on. Give Woodruff a chance. Unfair to jump on him so early. Let his top Minnesota recruits come in next year and we will see an improvement.
This is his 3rd season -- 2nd full season. I'd just like to see something, anything really, that would indicate this program is on the right track, or that he's part of the solution. I haven't seen it, just being honest. Have you? Good recruiting is just one cog in the wheel. Believe me, I want to believe, I desperately want to believe....

I have listened to his podcasts and have sipped the kool-aid, but I agree with you, the execution hasn’t been there. The unknown is what is happening in the locker room. Are they drinking the kool-aid or are they looking for the door? It’s even more frustrating since the traditional powerhouses in HockeyEast are struggling… this would be the ideal time to climb the ladder.
