Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Still lost of possibilities but as far as I can tell both Cornell and Colgate need to advance, and UNH CAN'T win the HE tourney.

If UNH gets beat in the Semifinals, and either Cornell or Colgate lose then UVM should make the tourney. THere maybe other ways but that's all I found on a quick first pass.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Not at all. That league likely only gets 1. Pairwise tool is out. UVM is pretty much a lock barring upsets in ECAC (2 games) WCHA with bowling Green and UNH winning Hockey East. Pretty much all those things need to happen for us not to make the tournament.

Not sure what you are looking at..only way we get in is if all the favorites win every tournament and UNH loses in semi. Pairwise tool is a cool thing to look at but its not a real comparison of how the rank will adjust because it cant figure common opponent weighting on a real time basis. If UNH wins the semi, pretty sure we are out regardless..I could be wrong as I have been many times in the past but we are far from a lock.

Great series to watch. Well done by the Cats, you gave our boys all the could handle. I don't remember the last time I saw a series of essentially 5 games, end with 1-goal wins in each game. Good luck (hopefully) in the NCAAs.

From my experience in the last, the pairwise calculator is an EXACT predictor of who will make the tourney based upon the results you enter in.
I tried several different senerios (including a couple with UNH winning Hockey East) and UVM makes the cutoff most of the time.

Wow Tsongas Center was really nice. Really empty, but really nice.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

The lack of people in the building Sunday was pretty disappointing. I couldn't get over how quiet it was during a lot of the game.

I missed Sunday but was there on Saturday and I'd guess that the number of people there wouldn't even have filled Gutterson. Really surprising for playoff hockey in a city with more than twice the population of Burlington.

Well considering the middle sections were packed on Saturday, I'm not sure what you're talking about?

Sunday was awful, but predictable attendance wise. Sadly. I believe the #s for Sunday for all three games that took place were lower than the other two nights for each team.

I agree there were sections of UML fans that were pretty full but if I were to guess the arena as a whole was probably closer to 50% capacity than sell out. Just figured with students in session and it being the HE tourney that more people would come out. There were entire empty rows to choose from on my end of the ice. Is that normal?

I only mention this because of all the talk of UVM building a newer and bigger rink. Tsongas is a freaking beautiful arena, but seeing how many empty seats there were on such a big night makes me feel like I prefer having a smaller arena.

Well students aren't in session. And 4k on Saturday night was pretty impressive (only BC had more). If you look at attendance in HE for playoffs, it's always pretty bad due to spring break.

Sunday, I had a feeling that we'd have a dismal crowd, and it was. The problem was that Saturday night was actually a good crowd, but non-season ticket holding families can't afford two straight nights like that.

Yes - Sunday was pretty disappointing re: the number of fans. As someone pointed out, school was not in session. One thing that may be deceiving, I believe Tsongas holds about 6,500 seats for hockey and Gutterson is in the vicinity of 4,000. So, while it looked empty (and it was pretty light)... it would probably have seemed less empty if the game was in Burlington with the same number of attendees.

The attendance was not very good for all three games in Hockey East yesterday. The problem was an originally non-scheduled game and it was
a day of a lot of St Patrick's Day parties.

Sunday attendance: BC 3246, UHN 2765, Chiefs 2513.

A 'sellout" at Tsongas is 6079. Yesterday's crowd of 2513 was the smallest crowd in over 3 years - 1776 vs Bentley on 1/25/2011. Before that you need to go back 4 additional years to a crowd of 2362 vs Merrimack on 11/1/2007 to find one smaller than yesterday.

UML was second in attendance in HE for the regular season while Vermont was 8th. Friday and Saturday attendance in Lowell would have been near sellouts at Gutterson Fieldhouse. My family was not too happy that I skipped out on a family party to go to a "hockey game".

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

The broadcasters on NBCSN just mentioned that after the Wild played the other night, Kevin Miller went to the Tsongas to catch our game. Cool to hear.

Given that students were on break, I was very happy how many were there for Friday and Saturday, less were there on Sunday. But kudos to UML for keeping dorms open beyond the normal closing for spring break, allowing those students to stay for the games who wanted to.

By the way, Lowell averaged 5,872 for 10 HE regular season games this year and overall, 5,047 for 19 home games which is good for 12th in the country out of the 59 DI hockey programs. Vermont was 21st which isn't too shabby either.

I heard that as well watching the Bruins game. I like the amount of college hockey talk during that NHL game as unlike the other major sports the NHL does not embrace college hockey that much in general.

Raw attendance or % Capacity? I don't think raw attendance numbers would be a good indication. UVM's % is 93% which is pretty good.

Using the numbers that ScottK put up for our "sellout" capacity, Lowell wound up at 97% of capacity for the year in HE games.
