UVM Offseason 2021: Well, That Was Weird

TovarishchLisa

(Comrade Fox)
Not much hockey for us this year and most of it was struggle bus. Now time to see what Todd does this offseason as we hopefully anticipate a semi-normal 2021-22.

I wasn't expecting too many good results given what was returning...and with all the stoppages I would just throw this year out and hope there's normalcy to begin the real year one next season.

I was curious what the roster would look like so here is my best guess based on who they honored for senior night and gathering the recruitment data:

Seniors (8)

Tyler Harmon - G

Brian Kelly - D
Carter Long - D
Andrew Petrello - D

Nic Hamre - F
Noah Jordan - F
Dallas Comeau - F
Jordan Kaplan - F

Juniors (4)

Andrew Lucas - D

Simon Boyko - F
Jacques Bouquot - F
William Lemay - F

Sophomores (8)

Gabe Carriere - G

Cody Schiavon - D

Whim Stalberg - F
Will Zapernick - F
Azzaro Tinling - F
Dovar Tinling - F
Ray Vitolins - F
Mickey Burns - F

Freshman (11)

Cole Hudson - G

Eli Barnett - D
Dylan Finley - D
Luca Munzenberger - D

Luke Mountain - F
Jesper Tarkiainen - F
Simon Jellus - F
Isak Walther - F
Porter Schachle - F
Andrei Buyalsky - F
Joel Maatta - F

That's 31 players (20 Forwards, 8 Defencemen, 3 Goalies) and some upperclassmen may leave or not all the freshman come in next year but it feels like there's going to be a full roster and a lot of new faces. My hope is that those who are able to stick around for summer school and the freshman who can come in for it are able to develop and gel so they can hit the ground running next year. I still won't expect some major improvement but if a few new faces show they're talented plus another year for the returnees in Woodcroft's system hopefully that starts moving the team out of the basement.

So you see Evers and Mullin leaving? Those are two I'd like to see stick around.

Buyalsky has like 21 points in 20 games or something since arriving in the USHL which is quite impressive so if he's able to translate that to next season that is a true building block. If a couple of these incoming forwards can put the puck in the net or are playmakers to help others do so that is a huge need. Defensively in the small sample size I felt UVM was solid. I'd love to see more puck moving defensemen with some standout two way game but have to take it one step at a time.

It appears you've omitted Phip Waugh, '00 dman in your incoming Frosh D list. By all USPHL NCDC accounts (see end of article below) he's still referred to as a UVM recruit:

Interesting about Waugh because he showed up to campus and was on the roster at the beginning of the year and left so many assumed he transferred out. Already there is a defenseman in the portal but this article is behind a paywall so I do not know who it is - is anyone a subscriber? No offense to Mike McMahon I subscribe to enough places already https://www.collegehockeyinsider.com/p/clarksons-dunne-signs-with-columbus
McMahon tweeted it out today. It's Cory Thomas.

So...I was bored at work today.

Is this what are roster is looking like for next year. Good chance I missed a few. I assume Harmon is coming back for a 5th year. If this is right the coaching staff is gonna be busy in the coming weeks. Definitely need a couple more D, that group looks...not ideal. Need at least 2 if not 3 more. This summer is going to be wild with transfers and decommits, hopefully they can find a few hidden gems to help out next year. Looking forward to seeing some of these young players up front next year. Going for more euro's is an exciting direction. Hopefully it pays off.

I assume Luca Muenzenberger is coming in next season unless he goes USHL for seasoning.

Brian Kelly and Owen Grant are both seniors who aren't in the portal as of right now, so I assume there's a chance one or both stays. If they do that at least solves the defensive depth issue for a bit.

This offseason is going to be fairly chaotic.

I hope they wait on Muenzenberger. Definitely a player I'm interested in, but I think a year (or even two) in the USHL would be smart. Grant I think would be a huge help to this team next year. If they could find an experienced grad transfer that would be ideal. An older freshman might help as well. The D group needs help right away.

The extra year of eligibility is gonna be really interesting. M & W basketball are going to be exciting to watch and the W hockey might be the best they've ever been. Already looking forward to seeing these teams in person next year.

McMahon Saying three new defenseman transfers https://twitter.com/MikeMcMahonCHN/status/1376542954484011013

Will Riedell from Lake Superior as a grad transfer https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/353791/will-riedell

Cory Babichuk from RPI looks like he could have 3 years left since he didn't play at RPI this year https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/148086/cory-babichuk

Joe Leahy from Cornell could have 2 years left since he also did not play this year https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/240521/joseph-leahy

So I think that shores up the blue line a lot more.

Goalies looks like Harmon, Carriere and Hudson (3)

Defense: Kelly (?), Long, Petrello, Lucas, Schiavon, Riedell, Babichuk, Leahy, Finley, Munzenburger(?), Barnett (?) (7 to 11)

Forwards: Hamre, Jordan, Comeau, Bouqout, Lemay, Zaperinick, A Tinling, D Tinling, Vitolins, Mountain, Tarkieinen, Jellus, Walther, Schachle, Buyalsky, Maatta (16)

Could be more changes a few of the younger recruits might come next year, but the max amount right now is 30 players potentially
