UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

Re: UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

Mark Cheremeta decommitted from UVM and will go to BU this fall, Jeff Cox says it's the first of a few de-commits coming.

Think this is Wallack departure fallout.

I think it was you who posted a chart with projected rosters for the next few years. It would be interesting to see an update of that chart with the players who have left/decommitted crossed out.

Re: UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

If I am reading Heisenberg's list correctly it appears Cheremata was originally planning to enroll at UVM in 2018 and was since deferred to 2019. If Heisenberg is correct then deferring him could have as much or more to do with him decommitting than Wallack's departure.
According to Ted Ryan's piece when Colton signed UVM was looking to add another forward this year, whether it be through a late commitment, transfer, or accelerating someone, so I don't think it was that.

Just off the top of my head....

Lee, Kearley would've been seniors this year, they're gone
Best graduated early and grad transferred
Colton obviously
Bowen turned pro
Decommits, off the top of my head: Ryley Risling (Robert Morris), Kale Kane (AIC), Max Sauve (Penn State), Cheremeta (BU), and the Wiesblatt brothers. And of course Cox teased that there were more coming.

Also just looked at the site which is now updated sans newcomers, besides Colton and Best no early departures and a few number changes:

Max Kaufman: 3 -> 23
Vlad Dzhioshvili: 6 -> 10
Bryce Misley: 13 -> 9
Cory Thomas: 37 -> 27

Kane is actually at Norwich! Did not do so well there in year one by the numbers but the exodus is coming it would not be a UVM offseason without one!

Re: UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

How on earth then would he be admitted to UVM? UVM standards are quite high. Must be more to the story.

Is it possibly that he did not make grades first semester and was ruled academic ineligible so he could not compete in second semester but still attended school and got his grades up but decided to leave? I would not be so sure about saying the standards for hockey players are so high many are good in the classroom but plenty are not and they have had a fair share of players who barely get by to keep playing! Either way not sure to expect much on ice performance but hopefully a change is good for the young man I believe in second chances if they show they won't repeat them! Jake Fallon got one and was a decent player for the Cats to pick one from recent memory

also heard some summer gossip of a big list of possible Sneddon replacements being passed around has anyone seen this list or know what on it?

A list passed around by whom? Is he leaving? With an contract extension last winter, it would seem odd that UVM would have created such a list. Maybe this is just fake news, did it come by tweet from DC?

If it's the list I'm thinking of, it's been circulated by fans.

The extension was technically agreed to in the summer and last year was technically Year 1 if I'm not mistaken, they just didn't announce it til the winter, which raises a million questions

only past along what I know heard it from a fellow fan at a golf outing over the weekend! The contract goes through 2019-2020. What use is a replacement list generated by fans. I have a list for the US presidents replacement, but so what. Everyone can speculate, I choose to be optimistic and hope for a turnaround. A couple players stepping up could mean the difference.

The more negative people are on this forum will just continue to drive good recruits away. There still is no place better than Gutterson to watch a game. That being said, I'm extremely disappointed that the "potential" renovated rink will keep the same lousy seating. That is not going to enhance the fan experience.

Yes this is true only speculation but would be interesting to read! I must kindly disagree with what you say about negative people drivng recruits away that is very much a silly statement sir! You say in one breath that the fans having a say on who should replace the coach is useless but then make it sound like we have the power to make recruits come? No sir that is down to the coaching staff and their actions over the past few years NOT any of us! if there are recruits reading this shouldnt they do what you just said and say this is only fan talk? Also it is in the job duties of Sneddon to bring these players and build a culture of succes whereh they will succeeed and his results not our talking about it is what is responsble for that!! We have a right to express ourselves and i find it so very humorous how many people here believe it is the duty of the fan to support so blindly..you mention politics is that not what we say the people who support the current leader do and that it is a bad thing but when it comes to UVM hockey we all are supposed to just believe its all okay when the evidence show it is not?
I too would love the optimisim and should you reference the past here I believed last season and did not come to be I will hope yes but I will not believe as much of course I would like the team to do great but I cannot put faith in that and last season was the final straw i have stopped my support in the form of paying for tickets and i was not alone and have not been for a while! they are offering discounts to recent grads now because they cannot fill the seats so so much for the fan experience for a empty rink when the basketball team is going to start getting the support unless hockey turns it around...lose your top scorer late in the season with many unprovens out side a few players I will remain a skeptic as I do not sense there will be a change for the better but yes I always HOPE there will be.....something some of these fellow fans don't get about their other fans!!!

I'm actually optimistic about UVM hockey this year....UVM women's hockey, that is.

With this team I'm keeping my hopes low and my expectations lower so if they succeed somehow it's a pleasant surprise :)

Re: UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

Incoming freshmen are being revealed on Twitter. Will have my preview post out tonight.

IMO this is a group of low-ceiling high-floor kind of guys. Long provides some nice size on the blueline which has in two years gone from a weakness to a strength, Comeau and DeRoche are coming off big years (although I'd put more stock in Comeau's as it was against better competition), Cipollone and Petrillo were good in prep/HS hockey (useless fun fact about me: I used to speed skate at the rink where Petrillo played high school hockey) and nothing special in the USHL, but I'm reserving judgement til I actually see them live

Re: UVM 2018 Offseason - A Punch to the Gutt

Gonna take a stab at lines predictions - I tend to be horrible with these so take it with a pinch of salt

Alvaro-Coughlin-Esposito
Dzhioshvili-Misley-Puffer
Hamre-Lodermeier-O'Neil
Kaufman/Cowans-Comeau/Cipollone-Fréchette/DeRoche

reasoning: Coughlin was primarily the 2C last year so I bumped him up a line. Lodermeier fits a third line role so we leave him there and stash Misley on the 2nd line. Dzhioshvili will be healthy so I think he'll be better this season and Puffer is always on that second line. Hamre on Lodermeier's wing makes sense for a third line as he can score and agitate, and while I'm not the biggest fan of O'Neil that's where he was usually stashed last year. Fourth line's a crapshoot, just run with the hot hand but rotate enough that guys aren't sitting in the press box for months.

Massie - O'Donnell
Thomas/Long - Grant
Evers - Moriarty/Kelly/Petrillo

Reasoning: Basically the same as last year as Phillips was the only blueline departure. That top pairing is almost always together, so it's basically playing musical chairs on the bottom 4 to get guys playing time.

Lekkas
Harmon
Beck

Reasoning: Predictable BUT I do think Lekkas should get some more rest this year. Having two stylistically different goalies can be very effective in a sport that's largely driven by 2-game sets; look at the Hoffman/Santaguida tandem that was so good for us a few years back. Harmon is better positionally but Lekkas has superior athleticism
