UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Jcarter. I have not been on the uml thread yet this season. Have you been over there trash talking them yet? I see they have not been on ours either. New world order?

No I haven't, it's been tough the past few years with the Cat's sucking and Lowell being so good... I've thought about it but they are still really good. Now I'm torn between going and starting something with Patronick and JD over on the BC thread... BC's not so good and they are easily riled as well. With the Lowell series being at the end of the season and likely having serious implications it maybe a good idea to go over there and cast a stone though. I give em the Christmas holiday I guess... you know good will and all. Then I suppose it's time to start. :)

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

The only player I would add who hasn't been named yet is Kevin Foster. I remember him as a really fast skater who had a knack for scoring.

Yeah, I loved Joe Fallon as a goalie. Tom Draper was also very, very good at a time when you couldn't say that about the team as a whole. I also knew him a bit personally and he was a really good guy--very quiet and unassuming.

Agree on LeClair. He was okay to watch, but definitely didn't dominate games like St. Louis and Perrin. Maybe it was because he never had that dynamic partner like those guys did.

Yes, two of my all-time favorites and sort of a precursor to MSL and Perrin. Both had a relentlessness, tenacity and knack for scoring that hasn't been seen much at UVM before or since.

I was at that game and it's still probably the most memorable hockey game I've ever seen. There were a bunch of UVM fans in the Garden that night and it was electric when the Cats made their late comeback against #1 Harvard. The place was going bananas when Brownie scored! Wasn't that like his only goal of the season or something? And wasn't he from Massachusetts? Must have been a special moment for him I'm sure.

That was the thing. Most of the guys I knew then we really nice. Boyce is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Brownie the same. I also was teamed up with Jerry Tarrant in a few classes and ended up doing most of the work on projects because he was on the road so much (but it wasn't like he dumped it on me, he just wasn't there to participate due to travel) but he still didn't take it for granted. Overall just really nice guys (unlike the LAX team..)

I saw this and thought it was worth sharing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kyc_34gOe0

Brickley seems to be having a great year in the AHL. Anybody know what's going on? He's having a better year in the AHL than he did in ever did in hockey east. Plus 10, 8 goals, 8 assists in 25 games... crazy! Did he just not click with the college game? I remember watching him one year, 1st game of the year. 1st face off won to him, he chips it into the corner and just destroys the other teams defenseman. You could see that hit was building up the whole off season.

I think Brickley was one of those players that just ended up being a victim of the style of play. He's gritty and aggressive and that style of play is not reward by the refs... especially in HE. I think Walls would still be with the team and seeing regular ice time if it weren't for the fact that every ref in HE thinks that a big hit has to be an illegal hit.

In kinda of the same vein as the previous comments, Sifers is my all time favorite defensmen that I've watched. Besides the leadership and just being a genuinely nice guy, he used to just crush guys... just lay them out at center ice. And he was relatively small compared to most D-men. I'm glad I was able to watch that then, because I don't believe Sifers would see regular ice time in the current era.

Also of note, Brickley was injured for a large part of his time at UVM. So, I think being healthy and just being able to play physical and aggressive have helped him to see a little more success.

Sifers is the all time leader in PIM for UVM. That's an interesting stat when you think about it. You have to be playing to take penalties. I disagree by the way. Sifers would have had playing time on any college hockey team and they'd be glad to have him. He was great with the puck and brought an unparalleled level of leadership to the team. Once he is done playing professionally I hope he decides to come back to UVM in some capacity. Did Sifers penalties cost the team games? I don't remember but because of his skill, dedication, personality, and intelligence I'd be willing to bet he incorporated the penalties into his game. Basically it was a "You better know where I am or else I'm taking your head off" that would change the way people would play against him. I admit I'm a huge fan, he was amazing to watch, and that effects my view.

I'd compare Walls more to the other highly touted D-Man that came to campus the same time as Sifers, Phil Youngclaws. He wasn't as good with the puck was less physical but once he lined somebody up for a hit, game over. He no doubt dished out the biggest hit I'ver ever seen in college hockey. This was back when the penalty boxes didn't have glass in front of them and you could just hop back out into play once your penalty was expired. I forget who it was against, but some guy thought he was headed up the ice with a breakaway and was skating up the ice as fast as he could. Penalty expired at the perfect time for Youngclaws to hop over the wall and then seriously brace himself and the kid from the other team just skated right into the trap. I think he got knocked out and it was a clean hit. Remember that one?

Also, I wonder how many of Sifers penelty minutes were in brawls or otherwise CF's where refs just started tossing guys out of the game. Remember that game against Union?

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

The best thing about Sifers hits was that many were face to face, most players can clean a man out with a head of steam if the
other guy is flat footed near the boards but Jamie would take someone on who was going full speed and even when the other guy was
bigger he still floored them and usually right in the middle of the rink. Guy blocked more shots that anyone I can remember.

As far as leadership the story goes the coach would ask Jamie to get a guy or two to do some event/charity etc and he would
show up with a dozen. Respect like that is earned not given. He was announced as the Captain and no one else has ever deserved it more.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Paliotta is pretty darn good also. He is better in some respects than Sifers, although not as physical despite being larger. He is the one guy I really dread losing after this season.

Yup, like I said... he was my favorite d-man of all time to watch. My main point above was you can't play like that anymore, the refs just don't allow it and it hurts a lot of kids who play that more physical / aggressive game.

I'd have to say that Paliotta has groomed himself into a better player and I also recognize what a lose he will be. Sifers passion and ability to punish the opposition and lead his team were unparalleled. Does anybody remember the game against UHN where he just pounded the snot out of Dan Winnik all game? By the 3rd period Winnik was taking half or quarter length shifts because he had enough. I enjoy the level of skill we have now and we need that level of skill to be competitive in college hockey. Back then we had a group of guys that were in much better shape than the opposition and dominated 3rd periods, the other teams just didn't have anything left. The strength and conditioning coach ended up going to the Blackhawks. Straight from college hockey to the NHL. He must have been pretty awesome.

I'd say the team is back into top notch shape, where was a lull for a few years but that was addressed, but other teams have brought up their level of conditioning as well.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I'm wondering now... Perhaps Jaime's height played to his advantage in the college game / allowed him to get away with hits that Walls / Paliotta can't. Reason I am thinking this... Remember Art Femenella? He was the exact opposite. He wasn't a goon, he was just so big that he couldn't play without getting penalties.

So true....so many of his penalties were the simple fact that his elbows even at normal height not raised were at head level of the person he was checking. I felt bad for him because he lost
what should have been the best part of his game thus they tried to make a forward out of him.

I don't think so, possible as a freshman, but after that the refs know. I just think the HE refs of today are very very different then the ECAC refs a decade ago. There seems to be no tolerance for big hits regardless of whether they are legal or not.

It's just a guess but I'd say it's intentional, with many more kids now heading for the NHL from college and in conjunction with the extra scruitny and attention concussions receive, I think there is a focus on trying to protect the guys a bit more then in the past. So big hits are called more often and the physicality is toned down. 15 years ago there wasn't this focus on Concussions, I think an emphasis has been placed on trying to eliminate those situations that can possibly lead to one. It's just a different game, that's why offensive minded defensemen have become such a hot commodity.

At least that is why I think, just doesn't seem like the same style of play.

Regardless Happy Holidays Catamount Fans. Two wins in the Catamount Cup would be a nice Christmas present. ;)

I remember a big hit last year that put a player out of the game and there was no penalty. Remember one? It was Shaw vs. Matheson like right in front of section 3. Everybody including the players saw the hit coming. Two big dudes. Matheson went flying and had to leave the game. I was all like "If you got beef then bring the ruckus, Brady Shaw ain't nuth'in to F with". In hockey east, big hits are tolerated but they better be clean. That's really important for UVM players as well. We have a number of shorter smaller guys that would get killed with more lenient checking criteria.

I'll just agree to disagree. Sure there are big hits, it's just not like in the past. But I guess that's just my opinion.

See article in bfp. Forgionne and mckinney still not cleared for game action. Forgionne is practicing though. Hope he can go soon.... five more ooc games to solidify the pwr status. Go cats

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Serious withdrawal happening... I open the main uscho page and see big Mike!

Finally the Catamount Cup!

Think the scheduled games should be interesting. Hopefully come out strong against a pretty poor Air Force team, then bang heads with PC. The games in Providence were tough (and obviously we got worked pretty good that Friday). Home ice advantage has me thinking we can get the second half started with two wins.

Also it's not like I can draw on 30 years of hockey knowledge but certainly the officiating has changed re: huge hits. Is that even up for debate haha?

To much down time this month, we need something to do so here is an idea for everyone who wants
something to talk about.

Make up a lineup of your All-Time favorite players. And I mean the ones you loved to watch play at Vermont
weather or not they ever made the NHL or even scored many goals. Just those you really liked to see and
made you enjoy the game even during down years(we have had a few)

So heres mine,

Goalies
1. Soucy
2. Draper

Thomas had the numbers but these guys didnt have his teams.

Defense
1. Sifers/Miller
2. Kloboucek/Palliota
3. Macaulay/Mckeil

Forwards
1. St Louis/Perrin/LeClair(If he had played 1 year with them he prob scores 40)
2. Mitchell/Boyce/McDonough
3. Leisenring/McCarthy/Stalburg
4. Stelljes/Leddy/Cox(Need a checking line)

Hard to pass on Sharp but he was here only 2 years, last cuts were Lenes, Perreault & Ducharme

At the risk of showing my age I would replace Kloboucek with Louis Cote and replace Leisenring with Craig Homola.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I'm going to call a monday night tie between pc and the cats. Probably 1 to 1. Hope cats take it but that's my guess.....
