Utica University 2022-23: Is This The Year?

A team that brings back 5 All-Americans from the year prior and has 7 NCAA D1 transfers on the roster

If there was such a thing as "the year", this may be it, especially if the boys have a good showing in Adrian next weekend

The COVID 19/20 team was absolutely loaded. If this one is as good, it should be a fun year.

Missed the Potty game. How did Landsberger look?

I am not really liking this year's UCHC schedule. What is the reason for going to a back-to-back games (either on the road or at home) with the same team schedule (which is common in western D1 leagues) vs two games on the road at two locations or two visiting teams a weekend? That means we will only see half the league teams this year.

While I get you (in a perfect world) the UCHC is a far-flung conference, and travel is a significant factor re: scheduling. Seems to me that the travel-partner calculus burned even more gas.

One thing I would have loved to see was the Adrian weekend happening mid-season. Those games will likely have a huge impact on the PWR, and I'd prefer to have seen both teams gel a bit before they were played.

I agree Fish, a sweep by either probably ends the teams chances of #1PWR for the year. Plus there's no buildup for the huge series ! I didn't even know they were playing this weekend !

The question -to me- is the attendance vis-a-vis the local interest. The figures are a bit skewed. A whole lot of RS games feature 800+ empty corporate seats. Hard to see those seats being purchased if Utica is getting hammered regularly by the likes of Canisius, never mind being destroyed by the (say) BU's of the world who might go for the payday and the easy W.

Then, one must consider the sure-fire increase in ticket prices. Right now, a UU season pass averages something like $4-5 per game. The average D-1 ticket is what, $27.99 or so, good seats going for 2-3X more? In light of that, all the families who currently consider Utica hockey a cheap night out might well consider going elsewhere.

Not really seeing the upside here. Perhaps UU could turn into a Bentley, but who TF cares about being a Bentley?

A shot at a D-3 NC, however humble, is a lot more fun than just taking up space in D-1.

You just pulled those numbers out of thin air. Average ticket price in the Atlantic is $10. Hockey East prices are $15-$20. Why would UU prices be higher than Comets?

If you think there is a big gap between Utica and Canisius today then you are mistaken.

The other change is most weekends are now Friday evening - Saturday afternoon games which makes for a 2 games/one location, home by midnight (more or less) scenario. (and less/no time for travel to a 2nd location)

JSice, out of curiosity, how many D1 games have you ever seen ?

Because of your statement comparing Utica and Canisius saying there's not much of a gap. I'm hoping you're comparing ticket prices and not quality of teams ?

Im comparing both. The top 10 in D3 wouldn’t have any issue competing in the Atlantic.

Well, that's kinda what I was driving-at... The AHA is D-1 Lite.

Utica becoming a Canisius is completely pointless on so many levels. It's hard to find an upside in terms of revenue, attendance (Utica sold more tickets in any two games last year than Bentley and Canisius did, combined, for the entire season), and there's no real improvement in terms of National recognition, nor via a shot at an NC.

I just don't get it, but I'm willing to listen.

You are thinking about this strictly from a towny fan perspective. The schools benefits significantly from this from a financial standpoint. Utica could go 0-25 and still probably draw 1,500 fans. Student attendance increased 250% the past 2 yesrs. We get it that you are a day 1, in the trenches of the ECAC west, and think your opinion holds all. Unfortunately you dont have a grasp on reality

Well, A Hole, I'm a "townie" who has spent half my life in Japan, Germany, California, Texas, and so on. Not a local, but one doesn't have to have grown up in any particular area to grasp the obvious.

Student attendance has increased 250% over the past two "yesrs"..? No evidence of that, but the lowly "townies" have filled-up the place in any case for 22 yesrs.

...And if you think that anyone, anywhere, would even cross the street to see an 0-25 D-1 team, you're out of your mind. Check out how lousy D-1 teams draw before you pop-off about a topic that you clearly know Jack about.

Is anyone gonna cross the street to watch an 0-2 D3 team?

Sure. Utica will likely win a bunch of games this season, playing at their current level. (See below.)

But Adrian is EVERY D-3 team's daddy of late. That's pretty obvious.

Adrian might even finish in the top-40 D-1 PWR, you never know...

Does "perennial national power" Utica have a realistic shot at a NC now in D3 with its one all-time NCAA Tournament win?

So, so angry. Again.
