Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

Busy news day to kickoff the new season thread...

Pioneers schedule released

Coach Olczyk leaves for Niagara

Interesting link. Thanks!

I had the pleasure of talking hockey with Coach Burkholder for about an hour at a UC game in The Cooler back when his son was a Pioneer. What a great guy; I've been a Niagara fan ever since. He was very frank and very funny. Betcha Eddie is going to love working with him.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

You're recruiting against the NCHA & WIAC if you get to Lake Placid.
10-4 but dont matter how big you are if they skate right around you turnstyle like, we will see how good the big guys move soon enough.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

p.s. they also had another recruit listed on D3 that is not on the roster Russian player 6'5" 250lbs

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

Guess they move pretty well !

I wasn't dazzled by any one Pioneer's feet, but team-speed on the whole looked pretty impressive. Castleton is way young this year, but I hope their track record as a quality program means that they served as a good yardstick.

Only a couple of WTH D mistakes; UC looked solid in their own end for the most part.

Ditto Fredrick in net, aside from his completely unwarranted excursion from his crease that resulted in the first goal. Heenan just loves that "3rd defenseman" crapola.

Speaking of King Gary... Saw a lot of parents at the game and boy-oh-boy did they ever chew my ear off. Miglio being a healthy scratch and some suspicious vote-tabulation in regards to selecting the captain were the hottest topics. (Not necessarily giving either one any credence, mind you, just repeating some popular opinions.)

Have no idea how UC will stack-up v. the rest of the W, but so far so good.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

The Pioneers look to be off to a good start despite losing a one goal lead late Sat vs. Naz. 3 of 4 pts in Rochester is quite acceptable. Frosh Frederick seems to have beaten out Wells as #1 netminder. Nice to see Bushinski back from his major injury and playing well. Two E-W home games next weekend v. Elmira & Hobart will add to the body of evidence regarding UC's chances this year.

Always great to see a player make a successful comeback from an injury :)

And George Roll, while I have had issues with him in the past (as have others), he has always been the real deal when it comes to coaching, a tie with a team of his, is often going to be acceptable.

Fredrick looked good, aside from him providing an assist to Naz on the tying goal. That's his 2nd such misplay already in this young season. It's painful to watch, and a completely unwarranted gambit in terms of risk/reward.

If he stays in his crease and tends his goal, UC has a chance in the W. If Heenan wants him to wander forth in traffic, forget about it.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

Missed Friday's game v. Elmira due to HS football playoffs. Saturday I though UC played well but Hobart is really good and at least right now looks to be the team to beat in the W. Thought for sure we would see Wells in net on the end of the back-to-back but Fredrick was again the choice and he didn't disappoint. Quick glove, quick feet, nice control of rebounds. My only knock so far is that team speed looks to be lacking compared to previous seasons but this team looks poised to be competitive in as well as win a fair share of their games this year. I'm looking forward to the Thanksgiving Showcase in a couple of weeks.

I agree that Hobart looked good. The only team to outskate UC so far this season. I don't think Utica lacks speed as much as I think it was HC making Utica look slow by comparison... And the Statesmen are always so well-coached; they never seem to be out of position in their own end. (Wish the same could be said for UC. Carter's matador defense on Friday resulted in two goals, and Szajner looked lost below the dots for half the night on Saturday.) Was mystified by some of the healthy scratches, but that's nothing new. Lastly, agreed re: Fredrick. That kid is as quick as a cat and very composed.

Overall, it's been a good start to the season. This UC team isn't as talented as last year's (underachieving) squad, but I predict a better record.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2015-16

No interest here anymore? Two wins against pretty good western teams this weekend past. Pios any good, they're big? Or are they big and slow like Cornell ?
