Utica College Pioneers 2014-2015: Bust. Let's try this again!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2014-2015: Bust. Let's try this again!

So far, so good, re: this weekend. Tonight's game was way closer than it might have been -UC could've potted 3-4 in the 1st- but I'll take it. Bissette's GWG was an absolute thing of beauty. You don't see a lot of guys at the D-3 level who can play the puck out of their skates that deftly.

I figure that another W tomorrow is crucial to Utica finishing 4th. UC won't win any tie-breakers v. EC unless they own the H2H, seems to me. But, in any case, we'll get a bonus home game in the PS, even if it's on a Wednesday v. M'ville.

Yes, huge win tonight and need tomorrow too. Looks like the Wed. PS game will be vs. Elmira though.

Ugh, Groundhog Day yet again..?

It's been vexing indeed to see UC carry the play so often this season, and then lose or tie. They put 37 shots directly into deMelo's solar plexus, and at least that many just wide of the goal. And 90% of their PP time was spent diddling-around the periphery, with just one man in front of the net... I realize that this team is young, and that young teams often struggle to close games, but it's been frustrating to watch just the same.

OK, deep breath, anything better than a loss next weekend at Naz ensures a winning season, and that's not too bad considering 14 Freshman on the roster. If this squad figures-out how to finish, next year might be a quantum leap.

Best wishes to the graduating Seniors, too. Educate and Hogan will be sorely missed, La Fosse and Baird certainly had their moments, and Taffe's swan-song was bittersweet. (He was beaten in OT by a near-perfect shot, but he played a very strong 2 periods.) Thanks for the memories, guys, and good luck to you all going forward in life.

+1. Also, deMelo's great glovework saved at least 4 goals by my count but they continued to test it like it was a hellbent quest or something. One would think they'd try the other side after being robbed over and over but of course that never happened.

UC's feet have been faster than their hands all year long. They blow into the zone at 100 MPH, and then over-skate the puck more often than not. If these kids learn how to dangle a little when trailing the play and thereby pot all those juicy rebounds, they might average 5 goals a game next year.

Just a note to UC fans who might be considering going on the road: that iceplex in Rochester is huge fun (you can watch the game from the bar and grill, FCS!) and The Domes in Elmira are (is?) a very unique venue. I heartily recommend both sites.

We'll be at one or the other, or maybe at both. Half the fun of being a D-3 hockey fan is to watch your guys on the road at quirky barns, and both places offer good eats. (The Warden likes that aspect very much.)

Some of my best college memories include road trips with friends to watch the Lakers on the road. Nothing like a road team able to get a chant going in someone else's barn!

Plenty of fresh air too! Those aluminum bleachers on a frigid night almost made me wish that I needed cheap and effective cryosurgery at a deep discount.

Watched the free webcast from EC last night (pretty good quality picture but kinda choppy/buffery at times), and that game was pretty-much a microcosm of the season... If something could go wrong, it did. I honestly don't think my bias is talking when I say that this team did not catch a lucky break all year long.

Not complaining. This group was fun to watch, and jcase was right in October: a >.500 season with such a young squad was a reasonable goal; I just saw the potential for a lot more.

So, going forward, Heenan needs to look for a couple of snipers to replace Educate and Hogan, and the young guys have to step it up. Samuels-Thomas needs to quit standing along the boards looking to pass and start taking it to the hole, Bushinski needs to get healthy (he's good!), Wells needs to keep progressing, etc. etc. Lots of things need to happen for UC to challenge for an NCAA berth, but the team is pretty d@mn close.

Watched as well. Too bad the game was over after the two shorties on the same PK. This is a really good freshman class, too bad Wold didn't stick around as he was one of the better scoring forwards. Recruiting looks to be off to a fine start so I'm already looking forward to and expecting better results next year. Thanks to the five seniors for an enjoyable four years (three from Louie) and all the best to them.

Hang tough, EC were in the same boat two yrs. ago. All things considered, I found this season a HUGE disappointment for EC fans.
See you guys next year.
