Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

He was definitely joking (he generally is 90% of the time anyway lol).

In any case, good win by Utica. Not going to dispute that Utica is definitely a top-10 team, and should definitely be ranked ahead of Hobart. They are the best team in the Ecac-W right now.

That said, I'm not saying UC should jump to #1. I'm saying Hobart should fall. A lot. Hobart was very much overrated, they've now lost their only 2 games against top teams this year (UC and Oz). Wins over above-average Neumann, Manhattanville, and Genseo are nice, but they aren't quite "top teams" at this point, so the question begs: who has hobart beaten to earn that really high ranking? They're now 0-2 against top 10 teams.

So, while it's a great win for Utica, it's not quite as spectacular as it seems. Based on who won and who lost this week (not dropping a team that won all their games this weekend, because the voters tend to avoid doing that), I'd say drop Hobart to 10, and SNC to 3, behind NRW and BOW. Move the rest of the top 10 up a slot because of HOB dropping. The chances of that happening, however, is slim-to-none.

But if I had a vote myself, here's how I would vote:

1. Norwich
2. St. Norbert
3. Oswego
4. Bowdon
5. Eau-Claire
6. Utica
7. Plattburgh
8. Amherst
9. Adrian
10. Williams
11. Hobart
12. Manhattanville
13. UMass-Boston
14. Babson
15. Superior

Other than Geneseo, adrian is starting to fall int that "who have they beaten?" cateory. Bowdoin has some good wins, but I'm still not entirely sold on them... But for now I can't justify dropping them out of the top 5.

I see UC and UWEC as interchangeable at 5/6. Good season by the pioneers, I do hope they keep it going. It'd be fun to see Plattsburgh beat them in the NCAAs ;)

+1

However, what is your justification for keeping Oswego ranked so high? Hobart was and is highly overrated this season, but could Oswego possibly be too?

Let's hope they haven't "peaked" too soon and remember, history repeats itself, winning the "Conference Regular Season" means absolutely nothing. Playoffs is where it all counts.

First - congrats to UC for the win.

Interesting to read a UC fan trash Hobart as "highly over-rated" (in a separate post - I get that "Cards Rule the 'Burgh" is a PSU fan). Hobart is 14-2-2 against a schedule currently ranked (in KRACH) as the 5th hardest in the country. While this loss DEFINITELY hurts, it does not take them out of contention for a pool C bid. BUT....they've got to find a way to beat UC or that window is going to get smaller and smaller.

I think all the talk about "top 10" teams doesn't mean anything beyond creating a chance for us all to argue with each other. The NCAA will not rank teams for a few more weeks. Right now, it is possible that UC, Hobart, M'ville and Neumann all could get ranked in one of the NCAA weekly polls. So could Geneseo. If this happens, the record vs ranked opponents metric may not look as bad for Hobart as you guys seem to think.

Hobart will move on and focus on Elmira...I'm quite sure they realize that team would love to (and can) play the spoiler.

Just havin fun here. I looked and was wrong...Platty can get in with an autobid. But, they're 1-3 vs top ten and won't get in any other way. Wrong or right ??

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

;)BTW...The "creampuff" ECAC West you are talking about has Utica SOS at #2, Neumann #3....and Hobart #5 hmmmmmmm!! Platty at #21 UH OH. Where you go from there ??? Just asking ?

You could be right, but the NCAA poll is the one used, not USCHO poll so as it has been said; "This poll really is meaningless"

yes I did mention " this weekend"...a lot of important games left as we ALL know, but for some reason I think utica will not stumble as they have in the past, for the regular season, as we all know the playoffs are a different season, whether its college or pro sports some teams just know how to get it done....disclaimer,past performance is not a gaurentee of future performance:D, man my mutuals funds have all the bases covered:p

who votes in the NCAA poles, and I guess this is the major place where teams get in and get booted out of the playoffs??

Last year, the following had a say on the rankings. It will be different this year due to coaching changes.

The smoke filled room: Bruce Delventhal (chair), Mike McShane, Tim Baid, Brett Petersen

Eastern Advisory Committee: Delventhal, McShane, Ed Gozek, Jamie Rice, Lou Izzi, Bill Kangas, Bill O'Neill, Ken Levinthal

West Advisory Committee: Bald, Petersen, Mark Wick, Mike Szkodzinski, Chris Howe

This year's rankings are out on 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 with the selection call on March 3.

I wouldn't worry so much about Plattsburgh. Just take care of your business. I think the Cards have some life left in them for the rest of the season. They won't give up that easily. Quite alot of hockey to play yet. Don't ruffle my feathers. You know how I can get!!!!;)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Only one problem...Platty has no shot of getting in.

I wonder how you figure that??? 1 point behind in standings with a game in hand. More importantly, a propensity for winning huge games when it counts and an unprecented number of NCAA appearances. More appearances than ANY DIII team...EVER. Plattsburgh not only can certainly win the SUNYAC tourney, but are now watching some competition for final NCAA slot slowly fall by the wayside.

For the record, they are 2-2 (both 1 goal losses) vs. Top 15, not 1-3. That record is better than Oswego's (1-3) and we beat them head-to-head. Perhaps you should wonder how they have a shot ??

Patty is 2-4 against teams that are most likely ranked in the top 15 in the EAST (Norwich, Genny, Amherst, Williams, Castleton, Oswego). Oswego is 2-3 (Platty, Hobart, Utica x2, Genny). Though Oz does lose the head to head at the moment, they have a better win %, a better record against ranked teams, and a better record against common opponents. As it stands now Oswego would have a better chance at the Pool C than Plattsburgh. With that said, I think both teams would be best served winning the SUNY tourney, as neither is a lock by any stretch of the imagination for the Pool C.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Utica is like the Manti Te'os girlfriend of the NCAA's. Pretty thing to talk and think about, but at the end of the day, their just not there....
