Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I wouldn't disagree with you on that. The problem with the D3 selection process is that it one that is mandated for all D3 sports - all of them have the criteria and procedures - the one thing that add to this is a provision (which may or may not have changed - joe keeps up on this better than I do) that game between teams of different regions don't count for inclusion in the metrics, except as "secondary criteria" (which means the committee can consider them if they can't reach a decision on the comparison of two teams after looking at the primary criteria). Most of us have advocated for a more transparent selection process. The other issue is that the process is broken down by regions first and then put together after the two regions have made their rankings...this creates a whole new opportunity for sleaziness - it happened last year.

I believe this year all games count not just those in region

I wasn't sure if that was being implemented this year or next. However, games against DI and (oddly DII) opponents don't count in the primary criteria. Why does it have to be cold when I get a chance to play golf?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Guess the boys must have thought they won the national championship last weekend???
Wow, what a massive letdown.
Here's hoping they get back on the beam tomorrow night with two big league road games looming next weekend.

CORTLAND —
Cortland State jumped to a 2-0 first period lead and went on the stun Utica College 5-0 in a nonleague hockey game Friday.

Nick Zappia scored three goals for the Red Dragons, including an empty-netter with 2:38 to play. Michael Lysyj and A.J. Moyer scored the other goals, Brian Roller of Utica had an assist, and Lyle Rocker made 31 saves.

Cortland entered the game with a deceptive 4-8-2 record that included several close losses, including 5-4 decision to Hobart, currently ranked No. 3 in Division III. Pioneers came in ranked eight in the D3hockey.com poll and eight in the USCHO.com poll at 11-3 with six consecutive victories.

The Red Dragons, who had never beaten the Pioneers in 10 previous games, had a 34-31 shot advantage. UC, ranked third in Division III in scoring at 5.17 goals per game, was shut out for the second time this season. The Pioneers play Western New England at 7 p.m. Sunday in Springfield, Mass.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Can't make it there, but kindly give us a little travelogue of your experience, if you will. (Cortland is a sub-.500 team, but has been in every game they've played. Not a cupcake IMO, by any means.)

We're thinking seriously of heading to Springfield to see UC/WNEC on Sunday, as long as the weather cooperates for the round-trip. My only real reservation about going is in regards to Smead Rink, which appears to have sight-lines that are about on-par with The Cooler... Smead is a publicly-owned facility that apparently wasn't designed to be a sports venue.

Anyway, it's only about two hours from here, and I'll post a few comments if we make the trip. We enjoy visiting obscure colleges for UC games, even though an eerie silence usually prevails.

Short ice, the benches extend well into the zones, hardly any neutral zone, brick cold, wooden bleachers, a phone line that cuts out....

In short, i can conclude safely that the rink was kind of a dump.

I was out of town overnight last night, but managed to sneak off and log on to your webcast for a few minutes (and for the first time ever) just as the 3rd began.

I have to say that you and your color-woman put forth a very polished product, and called a spade a spade: your play-by-play was seemingly delivered in real-time, and she certainly didn't attempt to apply lipstick to that pig.

Best student-produced audio I've ever heard. Nice work!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

has thread been shut-down??

Hey, I didn't post because I was otherwise occupied, but I hear ya on that one..! Where are my fellow chest-pounders now? (Pioneers #1, where is your report?)

I wasn't shocked that Cortland won, but I was indeed startled by the score. I gather from the little of the webcast I heard that UC made many mistakes in its own zone, but the ultimate credit must go to Cortland's 'tender. Anytime a guy makes 34 saves and posts a shutout, he's going to be a *little* tough to beat, right? :)

We were on the fence about bothering to drive to Springfield for the WNEC game, but last night's loss has sealed the deal. We'll be there, and casting a critical eye towards how Utica responds in another road game in which it'll be a firm favorite.

I suspect that we'll see Nick in goal, five angry Pioneers in front of him during every shift, and a lot more attention paid to detail than was described last night. I'll stick my neck out and predict a 5-1 win for the good guys. (That would be Utica.)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

That arena is far from being the worst one I have seen. I hope you are not using that arena as an excuse.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

The Cooler is the coldest by far. Cortland Alumni Arena is right up there and will agree with that.

I've been to Hobart nearly 30 times and I've never been as cold as Ive been at Cortland the past 4-5 years...and that's including some of the coldest days in Geneva. Especially if you sit in the bleachers at the Cooler its a lot warmer then Cortland....but I've also seen a game delayed because the snow was blowing in and sticking to the ice before they covered the opening....Hobart, while not the best ice, is also leap years above Cortlands ice surface. And don't even get me started on the goal posts and shots on goal....

+1 (Except I've only been to Hobart 3 or 4 times - and not since it's been enclosed).

Its much better norm. Still a high school rink, but better. Not good enough for Bob to want to go play a game at, but Ive spent several hours in just my hoodie. You have to wear a hoodie, coat, winter parka and gloves in Cortland.

One of the goalies on one of our first teams (2001-2002 or 2002-2003) told me the water in his water bottle froze during a game at The Cooler. Wanted to go to a game before "the enclosure," but couldn't find anyone wanting to share the experience. Not going may make my "things I regret not doing" list.

I hate to even say it because I like to think that Im an even keeled sorta UC fan....I drank the cool aid...I wanted them to get more respect in the polls..and yet they get their asses handed to them by a so so Cstate team...Gary must have lost his mind last night. I really hope that they right the ship.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Tell ya what, WNEC's venue at Smead Rink tonight was a frigid meat-locker a la The Cooler, albeit with terrific and affordable concessions. (How about clam chowder for $2.50?!?) It was warmer outside, though, no bull...

The lighting was good, and the sight-lines were fine from the top bleachers. (It helped that many seats were available; I could pretty-much count all 100 or so souls who attended.) White netting is strung from the low roof all around one side of the rink, but the other side is open, if you're feeling brave... Overall, a modest arena, but a clean one, and a good place to watch hockey. We'll go back if UC ever travels there again. (It's about three light-traffic hours from Utica, with only about five minutes to drive on surface-roads.)

UC dominated territorily all game long, and pretty-much coasted to the 5-1 win that some anonymous savant predicted above. ;)

SOG were not posted anywhere, but I'd guess they were roughly 52-23, Utica. Golden Bear G Sorenson played very well; that game could easily have been 10-1 or worse. UC played a pretty complete game, only Zappia reminded me of their shaky D play earlier in the year... Adams and Olivieri have really honed their decision-making.

In summary, a very convincing road-win vs. the top team in the ECACNE, a conference that will receive an auto-bid. (Go figger.)

Gosh, excuse me..! I guess I missed your effusive praise for UC when they thumped Oswego 6-0 to complete the season-sweep?

You can't have it both ways, OK? "What's good for the goose.."

It's really far less obnoxious to read admittedly-tiresome chest-thumping posts by Utica fans about their own team, than it is to see you and Laker Alum come hear at any convenient juncture to taunt them about a loss. There is no essential distinction to be made between either approach, except that you guys go out of your way to waste your breath.

You two should hook-up and develop a common interest (perhaps stamp-collecting?), if only to occupy all of the spare time you both now set aside to troll.

Just a thought.
