Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

So I take it that there will be seats available at the door... Will definitely call ahead anyway, since it's a bit of a haul from here. Is all seating general-admission?

No, unlike Middlebury, Plattsburgh makes use of the numbers they put on their seats. :D

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Unfortunately they do not make good use of the numbers on their scoreboard...
Unfortunately, Platty did not make the scoreboard, FAIRPLAY did. It is most frustrating for Plattsburgh since they have to put up with it at every home game when it fizzles!!!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Looking ahead a bit, The Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh at New Year's is on my to-do list, weather permitting. Never been there- that's reason enough to go -but the field looks pretty decent, too, with Castleton and UC invited. (Don't know much about Babson.)

Platty is a tough ticket when the students are there. I wonder if the holiday tournaments draw near-sellouts, too..?

If any of you have been there for an overnight and a game, I'm all ears as to advice regarding every aspect of the process, including lodging and eats.

Thanks!

I'm planning on being there as well, somehow. The logistics are a complete blank right now but i've talked to more than one person about it.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

If someone could enlighten me as to which end of the arena PSU defends in the 1st and 3rd I'd be grateful, seat-selection being of the utmost importance when visiting a strange barn. Thanks!

Slightly off-topic, but nice win for Elmira at Middlebury tonight. If EC downs Norwich tomorrow, the West will claim undisputed bragging rights... (At least until the SUNYAC crew weighs in. ;))

The sections are labelled by letter. Letters that are early in the alphabet and late in the alphabet are the end the visiting team defends twice, Letters towards the middle of the alphabet are the ends Plattsburgh defends twice.

The seating runs along the sides, with a small section running behind one of the goals. You enter at the top behind the west goal, and there are sets immediately in front of you (don't even try to get a seat there... season ticket holders and VIPs have that locked up tight). The sections are "lettered" from the far side on your left, up the left side, and then continue on the right side running away from you. The west goal (the one in front of you as you enter the doors) is the end Plattsburgh defends in the 1st and 3.rd.

I still remember when we had problems with the scoreboard at the aud last year. The irony of the situation was the scoreboard was manufactured literally 2 miles down the street.

Thank you; that was very helpful.

I wonder if you can give me an idea what sections are right on the west-end blue line..? (I can't seem to find a seating chart online.)

Probably not as "ironic" as it was "fitting",ya think..? That is how Utica operates, as decrepit as it is these days.

Been here 20 years, and the place has gone from a pretty decent small town to a complete abomination, all the strip-malls on its periphery nonwithstanding. UC hockey is the last man standing in this bombed-out burgh, at least downtown.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Just a reminder to all...the Buff St. game this Sat night (12/3) is at 6PM. USCHO has it listed an hour later on the ECACW page. Wouldn't want anyone to miss the 1st period! :)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Thanks for the reminder. They announced it over the PA during the last game, but I'd forgotten that fact some time ago, and I'm sure a lot of other Utica "fans" missed it completely.

(Should be many fewer wandering idiots there until midway through the 2nd, anyway!)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

UCpioneers.com says that the reason the game is at 6pm rather than the usual 7pm start is to "accomindating the earlier deadlines for the newspapers", wonder if this is true. ....I know the Utica Observer-Dispatch has earlier deadlines now, but something seems a bit weird there.

Some newspapers have earlier deadlines for their Sunday Editions. The Times-Argus Sunday edition is so stale that I never read it any more. And since they stopped free online access, I also stopped taking the Mon-Sat editions. (I know, if you subscribe you get "free" access, but the quality of their product is not worth it.) They would be better going the route of the Seattle P-I, which went on-line only and offers their content for free and makes money with their ads.

Agree--that explanation makes no sense. The game will be over by ~8:15.
Also, why only this game as the rest are scheduled for 7pm.

Right. I don't buy it either.

The local rag has never covered UC hockey with any respect, really... Even when the team was good, here and there over the past 10 years, all one could hope for was a tiny box-score 1 or 2 days after the fact in the Utica OD. (Didn't they have any slaves/interns with flexible bedtimes, FCS?)

So now this one game is scheduled early, just to meet a deadline..? PUH-LEEZE!

Not debating whether it's right or wrong to schedule a game according to a news paper deadline, but the O-D DOES reportedly require results to be submitted by 8PM if you want them included in the next day's edition, so I believe the reason given for the change in game time is genuine.

While I don't have any official knowledge of this issue, I might suggest that it is a trial or an "experiment." The deadlines for the paper changed this summer when the actual printing of the paper moved from Utica to Binghamton. I would guess that the effect of the new deadline was not apparent until there was no coverage in the OD on recent Saturday night games. Will other games be moved from 7 to 6 on Saturday? I would guess (and only speculation on this guy's part) that depends on if there is coverage of the game in the Sunday edition of the OD and a determination of the effect of the earlier start on attendance (for some folks with younger kids, the earlier start is better...I often see families with younger children leaving about 8:30 or so). Of course, the visiting team must agree (at least this year) to the change in time.

This time change means that I will not be able to make it to the game :( as I have to get someone to a high school semi formal dance  at 8:00 Saturday.
