Utica College 2010-11

Re: Utica College 2010-11

If this has already been said I'm sorry, but the only way Utica is making it in is by winning the ECAC W. I think last year's league championship showed that anything can happen with the tourny selection. After so many years of the ECAC W getting teams in the tourny (2-3 most years), seems like the shoe is on the other foot these days. Just ask Manhattanville about last year, or Neumann after the got screwed in 2006.

You wanna make the tourny....then just win baby.

That applies not only to Utica and the ECAC-W, but to every other team and league. The only folks assured of making it in are those with an AQ in hand. Everyone else is on the bubble and runs the risk of being this years leading screwee.....

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Does anyone know if you can buy tickets in advance anywhere? I checked NU's site and Iceworks without success. Anyone know the rink's seating capacity? I want to go to the game as I'll be in Central PA for the weekend but I don't want to drive 2+ hours one way without guaranteed entry. Thanks...

I understand that you wouldn't want to make the drive without having complete confidence in gaining entry, but I'm pretty sure that you'll be fine,no matter when you show up...Neumann is a tiny school with lousy local support, and doesn't draw at all.

I'm thinking about going to visit friends in Philly this weekend, and if I do,I'm going to take in the game in Aston.I'm not worried about making prior arrangements, but just to be absolutely safe,I'm going to plan to be there 45 minutes before the puck drops.(And that will probably secure me the best seat in the house.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Rink holds 1200 and enrollment is 2100...all I know. Go to the Neumann team site and call.

Heck, they may even let you ride the Zamboni!:p

Re: Utica College 2010-11

NU had our number this year. Great season by the Pioneers anyway! Exceeded all my expectations given the number of freshmen on the team. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next year.

Neumann College became Neumann University before the 2009 school year. Neither Norwich nor Neumann would be a university in the state of New York as you have to have several research based Ph.D. programs to be called a University. (Colgate University not withstanding.....)

"A dog-stool by any other name...(?)"

Even having said that,I can't begrudge them an NCAA berth over UC,nor Utica taking a back seat to Elmira,either...There is no reasonable argument to leap-frog UC over two teams that the latter hasn't beaten in seven attempts this season.

(Maybe the real NC doesn't stack up so well against Utica, though, given the common-opponent data...D-3 has waaaay too many AQ's,%-wise.)

A few less-deserving teams will make the field while Utica stays home and watches,granted...But I won't whine tonight.Utica had their fate in their hands, and NU took it away from them.

Go Soaring Eagles, and go Golden Knights!

(PS:And watch out for Utica next year.If this team stays pretty-much intact, they are going to be a Holy Terror in '11-'12.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Good season for the Pioneers. This team had lots of good talent, depth and good goaltending. Not being able to figure out the top 2 teams in the conference, at all, obviously cost them a shot at their first NCAA bid. It will only be tougher to get one of those bids beginning next year. They will need to hold onto the strong freshman class, but I think this team will be in the mix for the ECAC-W crown next year.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Yep,UC was winless v. Elmira and Neumann, and undefeated/untied v.Manhattanville and Hobart:squarely in the middle of the league. If only two E-W teams are going to get bids, there's really no question as to who is deserving.

What is frustrating is that all five E-W teams are going to better than at least a couple of AQ's/at-large teams that are actually *invited* to the dance...And it's going to be even worse next year, when D-3's arcane rules further alienate what is left of our league.

Some division..!

Wow...you're right! This is something you would NEVER see in D1 ... I think its a huge conspiracy just to get rid of the ECAC West...you should call the NCAA Conspiracy Organization you know the same group that investigates big foot, the Locness monster, area 51, Elvis Presley sightings...they might just understand exactly what you mean and try and do something about it. The ECAC West only deserves at most two bids, period. Get over it and move on or find something else to do in your spare time now. Continuing to whine about something that you just can't comprehend is bad for your health.

This situation occurs in all D3 sports. The solution is for the NCAA to change the ratios for all sports. This isn't likely to happen. Unfortunately it is the structure we have to work with.

I also ask the question "where did you place in your league?"
If the answer isn't "we won," I then have to respond "doesn't that mean that there are teams in your league that are better than yours?"
I don't think any league deserves more than two NCAA bids - ever, and the non-champion that gets a bid ought to be very special. Philosophically, the third best team in a league should not be competing for a national championship. They aren't it.

I agree, but my point was even in D-1 you have the weak leagues that get AQ's in every sport. And no offense to your comp ratings, but when making a tourny field, it should not be based solely on numbers or we would have another BCS type horror. Clearly the only way to fix this is to have a 73 (or however many we have now) tourney. But people would still find a way on how their team got screwed.

To me, there is no problem with a "weak" league getting an AQ - each league sends its best team to the dance. If they lose in the first round so be it. The purpose of the tournament is to identify a national champion, not a national top 10. I deplore the subjectivity that goes into polls. The problem with the BCS is that it is set up so that the polls really dictate who is picked for the national championship game. The computer rankings don't carry enough weight to overrule the polls any way. Solid, defensible agreed up metrics should be the method for determining at-large bids. The reason that a Boise State, TCU, or BYU doesn't have a real shot at a "BCS Championship Game" appearance is because regardless of any metrics involved, the prejudice against non-big name conferences will cost them votes in the polls. If you are the best in your league, you "could" be the best in the country. If you aren't, you CAN'T BE - somebody has already beaten you out.
