Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Checking out more Morcheeba this morning with Fragments of Freedom.

When I have more money, I will definitely download this one and bring it to my very special Mama Bear at Out On The Lakeshore.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

I saw Demons & Wizards, Lizzy Borden and Tyr last night. Fun show! I'm not the biggest power metal fan but I had a great time. Demons & Wizards is total D&D metal, and since they're more a side project they've never toured the US before. Tyr is from the Faroe Islands and doesn't get over here often so that was great to see too.

And now I'm remembering that I'm 40 and shouldn't go out on week nights. :(

I mean god **** Nirvana were Great!

Also wifey introduced me to pop music I was aware of but hadn’t given any attention.

Missy Elliott: eh, boring.
Lizzo: huh, I kinda like this.

Missy is awesome. She kinda went away for a while, went behind the scenes. Lizzo is outstanding. I'd also recommend Janelle Monae.

Added: Lizzo/Missy did a collab song which is banging. NSFW, and frankly, Lizzo OWNS the video in this era of body shaming. She flaunts it and doesn't give a single sh*.

...my Dad sent me a ton of his old 45’s. Holy sheeeeeeeyat! Most of them are in excellent shape. The Supremes, Johnny Cash, 4 Seasons, Everly Brothers.

But hot ****, The Supremes. I hadn’t Heard them in 20 years. If they’re not the greatest American pop band I don’t know who could top them. And Motown had a lock on the best drummers.

The Ronettes say "hi."

Better harmonies, more depth, more passion, more humor.

There's a reason Phil didn't marry Betty McGlown.

I’ll check em’ out. I’m not too well versed on 60’s pop.

I heard someone in the industry say that "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes (a great song) is considered by many to be the "Rosetta Stone" of all pop music that came after it, including most of the music by the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc...

My touchstone is the Shirelle's version of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," written by Goffin and King. It's the best song about teenage love from a boring girl's POV.

The best song about teenage love from a boy's POV is the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" or Iggy Pop's "I Wanna Be Your Dog").

(The best song about teenage love from an interesting girl's POV is Patti Smith's "Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer (De).")

The greatest pop song of all time is the Chiffons' version of "One Fine Day," by Goffin and King.

Be My Baby is friggin' outstanding.

And 45s!!! I still sorta regret selling all my old vinyl back in the early 90s. Of course, it was to help pay the bills, but man, what a dark day.

You can always buy the remastered analogs. Have you heard them? They're unbelievable on the best equipment, and I'm not the least bit an audiophile.

Of course, our originals cost 25 cents and these will cost $10 each.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

To be fair, the hipsters saved vinyl. They suck in so many ways. This isn't one of them.

Unless the source of the music is an analog tape reel, the new vinyl is only a mockery of the original pre-85 vinyl.

The source has to be the original analog master, yes. But as long as it never goes to digital at any point in the process it's still true vinyl IMHO.

If you press vinyl from a digital source then, yes, that is mock vinyl and a crime against Alan Freed.
