Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Mad Season - "Long Gone Day" ---> Godsmack - "Voodoo"

It's not quite the same song, but it's hardly a coincidence. IMHO, Sully Erna took that chord structure, massaged it to get the hooks that made it a hit, and added the AIC dual-vocal harmony for polish.

Love both those tracks. Just got an email that I received a credit from Amazon, due to my music purchase, so picked up "1000 HP" from Godsmack. If that song doesn't get you all jacked, I dunno what will. Great song.

Rush - King Biscuit Flower Hour

9/21/84 Toronto

Used to have this on cassette when it first aired. I listened to the **** out of that cassette!

Just found it again (finally!) online in a digital format.

I remember these versions of these songs like I heard them yesterday and it's been at least 27 years.

Nice little snapshot from the Grace Under Pressure Tour and a great find.

:)

One thing that's funny that as a teenager I didn't pick up on is the obvious crowd noise loop.

They must take the cheering before the encore or maybe when the band is first taking the stage and pretty much loop it behind the music. No way a Rush audience was that fired up for the entire show. They're going ape-**** the entire time. :D

Still a fun listen and a reminder of how much I looked forward to the Biscuit every week as one of the only ways to hear live music at home.

Have you seen the setlists from this final Rush tour? Holy *#%*@$(@($ *#%*#%*#%*#%*#*#*% I'm so disappointed I wasn't able to make the Chicago show.

I think it's the best setlist I've ever seen from the Willowdale 3:)

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Interpol: "El Pintor"

I would rank it ahead of Our Love to Admire and the self-titled album, but not ahead of Turn On The Bright Lights and Antics.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Nice rendition of an American classic.

Very nice.

I will say however that I'm always thrown when a female (male) singer performs a song that is overtly from a male (female) protagonist's perspective.

That's why when I "perform" the song Orphan Girl, I change it to Orphan Boy. Obviously can't be done with The Boxer, but maybe you get my point.

Still... one of my favorite Simon & Garf songs and they perform it well.

Phish - 7/21/15

Tour opener and a smoker!

Looks great on paper (screen). I just hope Geddy can hit the notes when he gets to the older songs.

Listening to 6/29/15 from Madison Square Garden right now.

He sounds all over the place on The Anarchist, but it could be a product of the room/recording although this is a nice audience recording. The band sounds great.

EDIT: Especially Alex... tearing it up!

EDIT 2: Holy ****! They do Losing It! Didn't even notice it on the setlist and didn't know they were playing it at select dates on this tour. Being weird, Signals is my favorite studio album, so this is a treat. Here's a video of it:

That was a fun listen. Geddy did as well as could be expected. Those are some tough songs for a however-old-he-is to sing. The band was on point.

I also wish I could have done the Chicago show.

Now doing Phish 7/22/15.

GURT, thanks! That's so awesome!

Signals wasn't the first Rush LP I purchased (that was Fly By Night) but it was for me (10 years old when it was released) a huge influence...actually the most influential Rush LP for me. Lyrically especially, I mean Subdivisions, Analog Kid and Losing It were huge touchstones...as a kid who's family moved from Chicago to a sleepy waukesha suburb the lyrics really hit home for me. The Alienation, the yearning, the wistfulness...

I love Rush and while I can cherish the memories of having seen them 10x, the current tour appears to be a real treat with that setlist...holy god I wish I had the money to see that final date in L.A.

When Geddy was saying, "...requires the services of a virtuoso violinist..." I'm thinking, NO WAY. They don't perform it live. Knew/hoped where they were going coz like I said, I hadn't noticed it on the set list as I only glanced.

Was most excited.

The violin solo is so cool. Like a guitar solo, but can make sounds that a guitar can't.

The song is especially poignant on this tour. I'm sure it's not lost on the boys.

Regarding Signals. Got it for Christmas on cassette when it came out and listened to the heck out of it.

I was 12ish at the time and it tapped into themes that I almost understood or could imagine understanding as I looked at the high school kids in my neighborhood, some of whom were actually getting to see Rush in concert. The themes also translated to some degree to middle school where I was at the time.

Hard to explain, but Rush held a certain place amongst the white suburban kids that I grew up around. They were one of the top bands for us at the time.

One kid, Billy Kinger, wrote "Moving Pictures" vertically with liquid paper on the street lamp post - pretty big and high up - at our bus stop in our neighborhood when that album was out. It was up there for years and we'd see it every time we drove, biked, or walked by.

Not sure why that's important or why I still remember it, but I do. A little bit of suburban white boy anarchy.

In the high school halls...

:)

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Listened to it on the way in today.

Funny, but Countdown can still give me chills.

It should come off as corny, but it never has to me.

Perfectly tapped into the pride and awe that most (many?) felt about the space program at the time. A time when shuttle launches were televised and people stopped what they were doing to watch. A time when astronauts were national heroes.

People who didn't live through it could never understand.

Pity.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

So continued the Rush thing with Moving Pictures and then Permanent Waves.

Now doing...

Lefty at the Washout - That Just Happened

Their new album that I just picked up.

Love their first album, so excited for this one although I hear it's a departure.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

New Lefty album was solid. Will need further listenings for sure.

Now hearing the new Slightly Stoopid album, Meanwhile... Back at the Lab.

Have already heard this one and it didn't grab me the first go round.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Next Amazon order, I'm getting Adele and more Amy Winehouse, especially some of her live music.
