USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

There are an incredible number of songs that are essentially the same structure and/or same chord progression.

If you can play three chords, you'll be able to play an awful lot of songs.

Sure, the progression might be the same, but the rhythm, tempo and other differences make the songs different from each other. I was talking about how the same exact riffs, or licks often get "borrowed"

Some examples right off the top of my head: Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution by AC/DC and Black and Blue by Van Halen. Or R.O.C.K in the USA by Mellencamp and What I like About You by The Romantics.

Or another of my favorites, strangely enough, again by ELO. Those guys must have been hella creative. Only difference is one upstroke in the riff

It's Too Late-Bob Mould.

Yes, the main riff is the same. But the melodies, what makes a song a song, are completely different.

A recent one is Theory Of A Deadman's "Bad Girlfriend" and The Cult's "Fire Woman." VERY similar riff in those songs.

I'm a flag waver and always will be for die kreuzen...been thinking about them quite a bit lately after seeing Ryan Adams tweeting his love for die kreuzen and mentioning them in a fairly recent interview...

here's a song that both represents their attitude (we're going to explore) and the uniqueness of their sound

they dabbled in crossover metal - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyEr5qz8amI

alternative before it was a staple word in music journalism - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pLSkP_bGmc

and of course what they're most known for (criminally, I feel) hardcore/punk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwAVPrBIVck

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Been listening to "Origin of Symmetry" by Muse recently. Solid work; I'd put it just behind Absolution.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Bumped my iPod and "Big Maybelle - The Complete Okeh Sessions" started up. So I went with it.

Haven't listened to this in a couple of years. Great stuff. :)

The Appleseed Cast - Peregrine

New discovery for me.

Certainly elements of The Cure in there although I wouldn't say they sound "just like" them or anything.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Sold off the last of my CD collection at the used store last night. Got $360 for an 18 gallon bin that was full of them.

Can't believe they gave me that much!

Gonna put it towards a GoPro for our scuba trip in April.

There you go gettin all crazy on us!

:p
:p At least the Nano will allow me to have a playlist. Last year, during the Fifth-Third River Bank Run 25K, at mile 13, I heard "Dog Days Are Over," which was great and gave me a little pick-me-up. However, as I made the last turn and headed to the finish, I heard "I'm Dying" by VAST, which is not something I want to hear as I'm crossing a finish line.

10 Ft. Ganja Plant - Hillside Airstrip

Spending some time lately with the reggae collection, which according to my iPod, I have 94 artists, 172 albums and 1,978 songs.

Trying to edit out the songs I don't like and make some playlists for our trip to St. Lucia. Like to have the sounds in our room or on our deck as we're chilling down there.

Daunting task as I've listened to most of it, but it's often not active listening like I do with other types of music. More background, mood, ambiance music for me. I don't really know most of the songs by name - have to hear them and then I remember them.

10 Ft. is one of my favorites, btw.

Next Amazon order:

"Frank"- Amy Winehouse
"Commit This To Memory"- Motion City Soundtrack
"Love"- Cloud Cult
"Reflektor"- Arcade Fire

I definitely want to add more Cloud Cult to my collection; I have "Feel Good Ghosts," "Happy Hippopotamus," and "The Meaning of 8," but I want more.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Was flipping and came across The Song Remains the Same on VH1 Classic.

Been lingering for over an hour. Such great stuff.

Funny how I have this (and other things) on dvd and I never sit down and watch them but will watch them when I stumble upon them on tv.
