Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

It's fall. Are you ready for Pumpkin Spice, or are apples (cider, pie, etc) more your thing?

I have apple cider every Fall, but not in abundance. I enjoy pumpkin pie, but keep your pumpkin spice everything else away from me. My favorite flavor I associate with Fall: butternut squash.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

For some reason, maple is considered a fall flavor, so that's my favorite. Maple everything, please. Although I do like pumpkin spice and butternut squash. I like raw apples (fresh Cortlands from the Farmers' Market - yum), but not apples in things. Basically, if an item I already like has a seasonal flavor, I'll probably buy it. I'm a marketing department's dream.

I've never had a Pumpkin Spice latte, because I don't generally buy coffee drinks... but I have seen that **** Maple Pecan Latte advertised, and I'm afraid those might be working on me. It is hard to find mapley things in this country if you're not in the northeast.

Apples. I like pumpkin to a point, but putting it in drinks (especially coffee) is a bridge too far.

In my experience, things advertised as "pumpkin spice" usually have nothing to do with pumpkin, and more to do with cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon.

There's a billboard in Oakdale, MN that always advertises pumpkin spice furnaces (not filters, furnaces) around this time every year.

am I the only person that thinks Honeycrisps are disgusting?

Depending upon the tree, they're either very bland or very tasty. I don't know why the difference, because they're all GMO'd to be the same.

I prefer the SweeTango. There's a little bite to them that offsets the sweetness, also a U of MN developed product.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

At $3 lb Honeycrisp's are few and far between for me. Local market had them for $1.49 lb so I snapped some up and going back Thur before the sale ends a get some more. Tried an Envy apple for the first time last week and thought that was pretty good. Always enjoyed a Pink Lady. Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, Courtland and Empire are some of the others I like.

They have some U of M-grown Zestars in our cafeteria. I'm going to get one tomorrow.

I still am not sure where to get SweeTangos though.

I get them form the a local orchard. I've found them in Target last year, too, but only when it's been in-season.

Made Tyler Florence's ultimate stroganoff with a few subs and without the mushrooms. This might be one of the best things to come out of my kitchen. Paired it with an oaky Chardonnay.

On my list to make again soon.
