US Foreign Policy 4.0: making the world safe to flee to if the MAGAts win here

Remember footage of ISIS enjoying the spoils of war when they took control of US vehicles and supplies after our Afghanistan withdrawal? And the outrage Conservatives had over military surplus being "lost" thanks to Biden (despite it being Trump who initiated the withdrawal).

Where's that same energy for this Houthi victory over Saudi Arabia?

This is inevitable and will be wonderful.

The European Union is proposing a new kind of relationship with Canada, one that could make it the EU's first-ever "associate member" — a model that does not currently exist.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the proposal Wednesday during her annual State of the Union address, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sitting in the European Parliament as her special guest.

"Dear Mark," von der Leyen said, "Europe and Canada believe in democracy, that power does not belong to the strongest, richest and loudest, but to all of us."

And adding the key phrase to her prepared remarks, seen by NPR, which did not include it, von der Leyen went on: "I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the European Union.

The announcement drew a standing ovation from lawmakers and dignitaries in the chamber, as von der Leyen and Carney exchanged kisses on the cheeks.

The moment comes as the EU and Canada look to strengthen their partnership amid increasingly difficult relations with Washington under President Trump.

Von der Leyen stressed that the proposed relationship was not "against anyone." But the very fact she felt she had to emphasize that made the context even more obvious.

For many Europeans, Carney has become a prominent voice for closer cooperation among U.S. partners he calls "middle powers", speaking more forcefully than they themselves dare. At the World Economic Forum in January, Carney warned that "recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited."

"He said it out loud," said Rem Korteweg of the Dutch Clingendael Institute, who says Carney's message has resonated across Europe even as Canada itself has come under intense pressure from the Trump administration.

"All of a sudden Mark Carney is bombarded as almost this honorary hero of what Europeans are actually saying to themselves behind closed doors," Korteweg explained. "Across Europe there is this realization, well, perhaps we need to keep Canada closer to us."

Dump, as always, is a buffoon.

I saw a list of favorable/unfavorable ratings by American voters for about 25 public figures ranging from Dump and Vance to AOC and Bernie. The only one with a net positive was... Carney.

Hey Suzie has already warned Carney he best not saddle up with the EU and she means it
Saw that. How will that play locally? Is that "Yay, she stands up for Maine!" or "Oh for fuck's sake, Dump's tariffs are killing us and you're encouraging him!"?

Very little thought will go into that if you are planning to vote for her. She can do no wrong if you are maga. On the other hand the rest of us want her to go F herself
I still think she will win in November, Troy ain't what I call a very strong candidate.

But you’re voting for him, right? You're not so stupid as to recognize Susie isn't a cog in the fascist wheel, and you're voting for the Democratic candidate, whether he was your first or fiftieth choice. You think too many Mainers who aren't MAGA, but also not VBNMW, will not be thinking like you?

I was all in on Graham and I'm all in on Troy . Same thing in 2nd district congressional race. We got a trumper against Matt Dunlap. Nothing about Dunlap gets me excited about him in Congress but he is better than a trumper
