I thought it was a little odd that they were playing Hawaii 5-0 when the score isn't 5-0.

To be fair, it's been debatable between band members for a while. When I played with them, band policy was that it must be 5-0 (or 35-0 for football; we also did 25-0, or 5^2-0 when there was a field goal and safety), but some thought we should have played for 5 unanswered; we ended up compromising and playing it in the second intermission.
