UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Barn

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

matt who? He seriously embarrassed the school, Omaha, Nebraska, the sport of hockey etc. He deserves no mention. We'd have little chance of recruiting another minority hockey player if we gave the hint that racism is ok in the hockey program. buh bye matt whatever your name was.

Except that the "victim" (a guy named Lamar Triplett) himself here said the entire incident was blown out of proportion and had he known that the end result was would be that White and Hodge would be lose their scholarships along with getting kicked off the team he never would have cooperated with the authorities in the matter or signed a police report in the first place.

And, he he didn't show up to testify against anyone involved and publicly stated the reason why he didn't. Hodge and Simonson walked on the whole deal and the only reason why White even was fined $75.00 was that he pled guilty the month before to the disorderly conduct charge that both Simonson and Hodge ended up walking on because Triplett would not cooperate with the authorities in the matter.

Unless there was a whole lot more going here than what was publicly divulged, as Triplett himself said, the whole thing was a gross overreaction.

I don't care what went down that night, erasing 3 entire seasons of White from the UNO record books (his stats have been completely expunged as has his presence on any level of even being on the roster) only calls further attention to the whole thing, not less. He played for UNO for 3 seasons. Period.

We should expunge Ty Cobb from the baseball record books even though he went into the stands during a Major League game and beat up an invalid?

http://www.hardballtimes.com/tht-live/centennial-anniversary-ty-cobb-beats-up-a-cripple/

That's a lot worse than what White did and Ty Cobb is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

O.K., they kicked White off the team. That doesn't change the fact that he played at UNO for three seasons. Frankly, in my eyes, it clearly compromises the integrity of the UNO record books and makes UNO looks unnecessarily punitive. The guy got drunk, did something stupid and now we pretend that he no longer exists, and never did? Come on!

Sounds good to me.

Shouldn't be

He used a racial slur. He and those other 2 should have been at home sober staying out of trouble. I remember when we had trouble with players going to the casinos clearly in violation of team rules shooting of at the mouth "you can't arrest us we play for the Mavericks" more stupidity from kids that are at UNO for 2 reasons. 1) to get a college education, and 2) to play hockey. Your mentallity is the same one as all those big dumb idiots down in Lincoln have (football players). We don't need premadonnas we need numbers in the win column period. If you come to UNO on a scholarship and plan for anything less you don't deserve any recognition. This cry baby mentality our society has is why we have the mess we have. matt white was sent a message so was what's his name show off alex whatever. If you want to act stupid go home and be forgotten. Gee I wonder how a coach like Red Berenson handles dumb kids.

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

The only attention called to it is by people who want to make a big deal out of it. How do you feel about USC having titles and seasons expunged for stupidity, that's a team of 70 this is one kid. Not a big deal. Should UWEC still honor their players by naming them in their record books, where is the line?

Having a scholarship is a job worth thousands a year and if you put you're employer in a negative light than you get let go and they make every attempt to cut all possible ties with that person or their history with a company. It happens all the time in the real world and college player or not you still have contract not to mention student code of conduct to adhere to.

harassment when (1) submission to the conduct
is an explicit or implicit term or condition of
employment or academic standing, (2) submission

basis for an employment or academic decision,
or (3) the conduct has the purpose or effect of

performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or
offensive working or academic environment.

I think he got off easy. IMHO any improper act such as this which embarrasses the school, department, your team and your teammates should result in a repayment of all the scholarship. If you don't have enough respect for the people around you figure out how the rest of the world lives having to pay for school.

Oh and can we just enjoy the heart shown by these guys once in awhile? Sure they make mistakes on the ice, sometimes quite a few and lose games, but they also have the ability to be great. See last Saturday vs. SCSU or tonight vs. UND. They were picked to finish 7th, they had no significant experience in goal, they lost a lot of cogs from last year and are in a great conference with some of the best hockey every weekend. If there's no enjoyment in playing the current 11th toughest schedule, being in 3rd, splitting with UND, splitting with Michigan, talking 3 of 4 from Miami, splitting with SCSU and only on focus on the downs why watch? By all preseason accounts things should be much worse, so enjoy it while we can.

Omaha is probably the best offense in the nation after BC. But when your defense and goaltending is terrible, you will lose more than you win. This is the same situation as last year but some of you still don't get it.

I sure as hell get it. I've been saying this, or words to this effect, for some time, now.

I fundamentally agree with you the gist of what you've said, but, you managed to gloss over the fact that the victim here said himself that the whole thing was blown entirely out of proportion.

I'm not saying say so, the accused aren't saying so, the person this happened to is the one who is saying so. When the "victim" is saying that the punishment did not fit the crime that certainly raises eyebrows about how this whole matter was handled.

I am not defending Matt White, Preston Hodge, or Alex Simonson. I wasn't there. I don't know, EXACTLY what went on. But when the victim of an alleged crime is taking umbrage with the punishment that is dealt out to the accused in the matter, to the point that you have such a problem with it you refuse to cooperate with the authorities, that sure says something to me. It screams knee-jerk, overreaction by the school to me unless the school presents evidence to the contrary, something that they did not do then, or, since.

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

As satisfying a win tonight as UNO has had since our last tourney season in '10-'11.

This season is becoming kinda reminiscent of '09-'10, Coach Blais' first season here, when we sorta caught fire and went 7-4-1 down the stretch and turned it into a 20-16-6 season.

We need to win tomorrow night and we need SCSU to lose.

Very entertaining game tonight and I am sure that DU has had quite enough of Josh Archibald.

Disappointing crowd, only 6,281. Among the smallest crowds of the season. There will be more there tomorrow night, which is a must win game for UNO if they have any serious conference title aspirations.

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

Blais shouldn't complain too much. I saw 3 different time we should have taken a hooking call and we didn't. I didn't see a whole lot of Archibald after he got his second goal. I wondered if coach benched him just to keep him healthy. The ice seemed like it was in bad shape.

After he got knocked into the boards and left the ice (with some help) people sitting around me started to ask me where he was or if I had seen him. We assumed he was just a bit dinged up. He was out quite a bit at the end. Would have been nice for him to get that third goal again. He's starting to get onto the Hobey radar screen but for him to win it he has to stay THIS on fire and UNO has to become (and stay) equally on fire. Otherwise, he won't get the needed, ahem, "attention" to win it.

I wondered if Dean would bench him to keep him from being a target. Sounds like it was too late for that. He won't get the Hobey because his stats aren't as good and UNO is too far from winning the frozen 4. I brought the crappiest hat I own hoping to toss it.

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

NCHC web site feature on the history of UNO hockey:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEStkRAuDoA&list=PLyRhkrNfj3riBnLPIwlRFqazzBgN5gbpC

I think it would have been worth mentioning that UNO has only finished as low as 8th in attendance, nationally, ever, and every other year of the program's existence, it has finished no lower than 6th. Another glaring omission would be a reference to the UNO Blue Line Club. I don't know it's size relative to the other NCHC teams, but, when we were in the CCHA, UNO's Blue Line Club was larger than all the other team's in the conference booster clubs combined for the entire time we were in the CCHA. Which is just one of the reasons why we are a "player' every year, nationally, in attendance since the two things are obviously related.

While UNO was selling out those 131 straight games at the Civic (cap. 8,314) mentioned in the video we had a season ticket base (over 6,300 the whole time we played there) that was bigger than most teams entire arenas.

Great win tonight by the guys. Need to do it again, tomorrow night, obviously.

A bit off topic, here is a video feature done by the USHL this week about the Omaha Lancers and their history here:

http://www.ushl.com/news.php?action=detail&news_id=2323

Since they have blazed a lot of the path for the success of UNO hockey here in Omaha (with apologies to the old Omaha Knights that did so as well) some homage to them is in order. The entire video was shot at their brand new digs, Ralston Arena (cap. 4,020 for hockey):

http://www.ralstonarena.com/

.............where they are averaging 3,230 per game through 25 home dates this season. The Lancers currently have 4 UNO commits on their roster.

Side note: There are UNO fans I have spoken to that are conjecturing that the Lancers might play an occasional big ticket demand game (read: games with the Lincoln Stars) at UNO's new arena. The Lancers already share Ralston Arena with UNO's basketball teams (until UNO's new arena is completed that is).

I think their Wikipedia page sums it up nicely:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omaha_Lancers

"The most stored club in league history", a moniker largely built on the backs of Frank Serratore, Mike Guentzel, & Mike Hastings, I might add.

Without the Lancers paving the way, I don't know if UNO hockey happens or if would be as successful as it has been here (everywhere but on the ice).

What's up with Ian Brady?

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

According OWH it's a knee injury for Brady. Also of course as everyone in Omaha knows, Zahn broke his foot valiantly blocking shots on a Western PP Saturday most likely ending his career, just when it finally seemed he'd gotten his speed back after the early season injury.

Re: UNO '13-'14 Season Thread: Barnstorming Through a New League and Raising a New Ba

Booo.... I will keep coming back until my questions are satisfactorily answered :)

Brady has a knee injury and won't play this this weekend. During Coach Blais' radio show last night, he alluded to the injury but didn't say he wasn't going to play (didn't say he would, either, though). Omaha World Herald article (mostly about Raubenheimer's season ending injury):
