UWS & MTU
Counted 5 Seniors, a really good group of Juniors and Second years along with another slew of Frosh on this years Yellowjacket roster. It's good to see solid Jr's like Massingham, Phenow, Dalbec, Forsythe, Singerhouse, Meyers, and Strandberg back to skate with our Seniors. However, the season will hinge on our underclassmen again. Positively, the veteran players on the team have the leadership qualities to make that reality.

Strandberg is out with injury, it'll be up to either a Minnesota freshman or a freshman from Europe.

Wisconsin-Superior - 6

Final NCHA regular season matchup at Wessman Arena ended in a four player bout. Helmetless punches were thrown as the entire crowd looked on. Both teams settled and shook hands. Both teams o'fer on PP with 65 minutes of penalty time. Also, all 10 goals scored by different player. All in all, a much better showing for UWS.

In the WIAC - their next regular season home game against St. Scholastica will NOT be an NCHA game (the reference was to the conference NOT the location).

Norm, thanks for clearing that up. Any hints other WIAC programs without mens ice hockey have considered forming a program? The idea a public university adding a full on ice program in a fiscal climate like this might be crazy. But maybe long term, it's a worth the risk. 5 teams and no autobid in such a historically successful group just does not seem acceptable.

Are the "heads of state" for the WIAC under the impression that the conference winner will be good enough to get into the tourney? Or maybe they are banking on a larger tournament field, which would increase chance of getting a team or two into the field?

And until that time, I think we can count on Pool B (as it always did) serving as a defacto ECAC West auto bid (although not necessarily going to the playoff winner).

Probably, but with SNC and CSS gone, if Point or Falls or Superior were to win the WIAC and finish up with 2 or 3 losses I would think they would have to be in serious consideration for the Pool B. I think this is a long shot however, as I think the WIAC winner finishing 15-10 and last place team finishing 10-15 is a far more likely scenario.

We are correct in assuming the Pool B will return because there will be two conferences without an AQ?

Pool B only went away because there were no longer at least 7 (technically 6.5) teams without access to Pool A. With the WIAC, that would once again be the case, and Pool B would be back.

Actually the number (known as the access ratio) is found by dividing the number of schools in Pool A conferences by the number of Pool A bids. (This is the reason there was only one Pool B slot when we had a 6 team ECAC West and a 7 team MCHA as Pool B eligible a few years ago) The idea being that teams not in Pool A leagues should have the same proportion of first priority bids to the NCAAs as those that are. Currently that number is 66/8 = 8.25 (ECAC E 8, NESCAC 10, ECAC NE 8, MASCAC 7, SUNYAC 9, NCHA 7, MCHA 8, MIAC 9) 66 schools, 8 Pool A bids.

Also remember that if SNC & CSS don't join a conference that has an autobid, they will be eligible for the Pool B* (and give the ECAC-W a run for their money - though money (travel considerations) will in many cases be a significant skewing factor).

* Pool B comprises independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.

I'm missing the joke, Norm. MCHA has had an autobid for 3 years now, and I see no reason to think that It'll be a given that it's earned by SNC or CSS starting next season. I believe Adrian, MSOE, and others will have something to say about it as well.

Edit : ahh, eureka, I get it. Not that funny though. Plus, Adrian ended both Elmira and Oswego's season in '11, further discrediting the joke.

No joke intended, IMO the top 5 MCHA teams (of which Adrian & MSOE will be 2 of) will dominate over the bottom 5 (polarized), perhaps the WIAC hopes to persuade couple of LVC equivalents to jump over to them.
