Union @ RPI on Saturday, 11/16

Re: Union @ RPI on Saturday, 11/16

After all, you think what I type is bull****.

Tell me, how many majors did the "out to get RPI" crew of Baker and McDonald call against RPI last night? How many RPI goals did last night's officiating crew wave off? I'm waiting...

I started no conversation about waveoffs. Time for you to go on ignore.

The third goal was the beginning of the end. The 4th goal was the stake through the heart that you got to see in those old Hammer Horror films with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. We have had these episodes where the wheels have come off before-and not just with Union-we have to figure out why and stop it if we are to be a top ranked program. Union became a national power by doing just that under the previous coach-and they have continued it with the current coach.
Your last sentence speaks volumes Doc. It's all well and good to, "sell ice-cubes to Eskimos" but to be unable to hold 3rd period leads....not be able to get your team up for "important " games (reg. season or playoffs) well, I'll leave it at that.

Bingo. What has Harold Hill done? If you can't even match up with your own league (e.g. Union, Cornell, Princeton, even Brown), how are you going to have a chance nationally?

You and i have been on the same page for a long time. Getting the best recruits here is remarkable knowing all the reasons that some of th ebes tchoose to go elsewhere rather than get a phenomenal education in Troy. But preparation and strategy wins games. Whatever adaptations have to be made have to be done-before games, in the locker room, between periods, and often on the fly between shifts. We have to be able to alter our game, or style, to fit the situation. No two teams are identical. Playing with the lead can be very different late in a game than playing from behind. Winning faceoffs obviously important-but far more important in the defensive zone when short handed. Pulling the goalie to try and tie is all fine and expected-but it has to give you the ability to keep the puck in the offensive zone and pressure for chances or else it is just going through the motions. We seem to have all the pieces of the puzzle for playing winning hockey-it just all has to be meshed together. Jen and i get to watch a lot of hockey on cable here-we see many of the national powerhouse teams and they are all talented. But so are we and I honestly think we can play with anyone. But they do the little things consistently better and they win games or come back to tie games that we have not. Everything is a bit relative-other teams make turnovers but we just seem to do it more often. Other teams take bad penalties(often lazy penalties) but we just seem to get called more frequently. Just my 2¢, but we often play just well enough to lose in a frustrating and heartbreaking manner. How to fix all of this? I have no clue-that is what the sharper hockey minds are for. It is still fun and exciting and we will follow this team forever.

Still expecting to see JL and Haggerty together again. Also waiting for tinordi and McGowan to be on a line together. Glad to see Dolan back in-hopefully the chemistry between him and #3 will click. The defense yesterday just did not do what was necessary against a hard forechecking and quick transition team like Union. And again, just hoping the officials are not the determining factor in this game or any others.

Re: Union @ RPI on Saturday, 11/16

Ralph-scoring 2 goals at the end of a game when Union was protecting a huge lead is not a good example. The prevent defense often allows a lot of different things to happen. In addition the officials were quite helpful giving us a 5 on 3(well after the game was decided). I did not see the game-but from the excellent play by play from Kurt-Union played a solid 60 minutes while we played about 1/4 of that. I do not think that is in any way an indication of what will transpire tonight-I think we will come out with just that much more to prove. My reservation for tonight is that we won the special teams battle last night and still got beat-I am not so sure we win that same battle tonight.

I was saying that Union did not play a 60-minute game. They let up for a short time as we did against Cornell. Yes the results weren't the same.

I just did not think Union let up-in fact i haven't seen that from them in any game i have followed for a long time. The 2 goals we were able to come back with, we worked for and we also got a bit of penalty call help. Union never stopped checking and trying to keep us from scoring. We just will have to find the way tonight to out hustle and out play them for the full 3 periods.

Re: Union @ RPI on Saturday, 11/16

We seem to sometimes leave our game in the locker room after leading for two periods. I wonder how we would do if he had an evening to think about a lead. Cedar Rapids (RPI recruit Meirs Moore) was leading 3-0 early in the 3rd period yesterday when a piece of glass broke and for some reason they didn't have a replacement. The game was resumed today and they lost 4-3. Boxscore: http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2235004

BTW, Cedar Rapids goalie is an SLU recruit and the player who scored the hat trick for Indiana is a PSU recruit.
Edit: The third goal was taken away from Conway.
