Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Does anyone have any thoughts on Union's captaincy this season. With Juice, Zajac and Welsh having departed there is no automatic successor in line. I'd throw out there Greg Coburn and Carr as potential candidates.

Probably gonna be Coburn for sure hes a lock and the Bodies as well. :)

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Great interview with Jeremy. He really seems to have a huge opportunity there. So far as looking ahead for U, I see it as a team effort to fill the void Jeremy is leaving. I think Carr needs to and can really light it up and Hatch has to fulfill what has been a lot of potential. How many breakaways did he have last season? Seemingly one or two a game. Needs to finish. I'm looking for Wayne Simpson to become an elite player and to step in for both Welsh and Zajac...talk about big skates to fill. With Ghost, M. Bodes, Forgaard, Coburn, et. al. the defensive corps that should be solid and with Troy and Colin backstopping there's a solid line of last defense. We'll have to see how the frosh and rising sophs make out, but I think there is a lot of potential there as well. I do think that Juice is going to leave a large void in terms of his steady play and most importantly his leadership. I never paid that much attention to captaincy and all that, but it's obvious that U has been blessed in that department. The leadership and interaction between the captain and the coaching staff is I've learned, a pretty big deal, far more than a figure head position.

Wayne Simpson was best player on ice so far at Bruins dev camp. Made a great name for himself and should have a great year.

Thanks for the update :), I'm really expecting big things out of Wayne for his senior season. He's improved every year so far at Union and 20 goals shouldn't be out of reach.

Here's an article with quotes from both Simpson and Carr on their experiences so far at development camp: http://thehockeywriters.com/a-pair-dutchmen-give-bruins-development-camp-union-college-flavor/

Huge momentum swing by a program clearly on the rise.

:D

Daniel Carr scored in Sunday's scrimmage at Bruins camp. I found a quick write up on Carr's performance from a fan on the Hockey's Future boards:

Daniel Carr scored in the scrimmage…and he was a good player all day. Nothing really stands out about him, but he does everything quite well. He’s got a high compete level and finds ways to contribute. Could he be the next Carter Camper…but with better size/physical package?

Let's hope his helmet doesn't get too small for him with all of these rave reviews. ;)

Simpson and Spooner by far the two best F's on the ice today with Wayne being a notch above Spooner. Made a great name for himself with the pro crowd. Plays a pro game that might be better suited for just that... After he graduates of course

Totally agree. As an ECAC follower went to watch Simpson, Carr, Sexton and Ferlin. Wayne Simpson was the best player on the ice Sunday during the scrimmage. Carr made an impact as well. Sexton from Clarkson was surprisingly strong. Although I believe Ferlin popped-in a rebound - he seemed and looked tentative to me but he is young.

Union makes their incoming recruiting class official: http://www.unionathletics.com/news/2012/7/5/MICE_0705124609.aspx

On Boyle:

“Tim's going to be a solid defensive defenseman for us,” Bennett said. “I think his offensive ability will come out with time. We're looking from some good things from him going forward.”

On Cruice:

“Nick is going to be an in your face type of player, but can also provide offense because as he has a nice skill set to compliment his aggressive game,” Bennett said. “We need a player like Nick, and we're looking forward to having him here at Union.”

On DiPauli:

“Theo will add speed to our lineup, and he's another in-your-face type of hockey player,” Bennett said. “He could be a fan favorite here at Union. He's a solid all-around hockey player that can come in on the fourth line, but also jump up into the top six.”

On Gingras:

“Sebastien has a tremendous shot and hockey sense,” Bennett said. “He could provide a right-handed shot on the power play for the upcoming season, which would help offset the loss of Jeremy Welsh.”

On Roy:

“He's a bigger body that will add size to our lineup for what we've lost last season,” Bennett said. “He fills another need in the center position. He has a lot of hockey sense and playmaking ability, and he has a chance to be a top forward for us on a consistent basis.”

On Wilkins:

“Matt will be looked upon to compete for a top-nine forward spot, as we're looking for an offensive spark to fill the void left by the departing senior class,” Bennett said. “He is another player with tremendous hockey sense.”
