Sad news to report.... I say that somewhat sarcastically.....

According to @MessaFaithful, the mascot "Dutch" has reportedly been retired.

Twitter reports are that he was taken out back and shot...However, there is no truth to the rumor that the statue will be painted with old Dutch's blood this year.

From Ken Schott:

For the first time in its 22-year Division I history, Union has been picked as the favorite to win the ECAC Hockey regular-season title.

The Dutchmen, the two-time defending ECACH Cleary Cup champions, were picked first in the coaches’ and media polls. The Dutchmen received eight of 12 first-place votes and earned 118 points in the coaches’ poll. In the media poll, the Dutchmen got 18 of 30 first-place votes and received 343 points.

Union, which went 14-4-4 in the league last season and finished 26-8-7 overall, is seeking to become the first team to win three straight ECACH regular-season titles since Harvard did it from 1992-94. The Dutchmen won their first ECACH tournament title, and captured the NCAA tournament East Regional to reach their first Frozen Four at the Division I level.

The coaches and media were in agreement on the top six spots. Cornell is second, Harvard came in third, Quinnipiac placed fourth, Yale is fifth and St. Lawrence finished sixth. They also agreed on Princeton (11th) and Brown (12th).

RPI finished eighth in the coaches poll with 46 points, and ninth in the media poll with 144 points. The Engineers finished 10th in the league last season with a 7-12-3 record. They knocked off seventh-seeded Clarkson in the ECACH tournament first round before falling to the Dutchmen in the quarterfinals.

The rest of the results have Dartmouth seventh in the coaches’ poll and 10th in the media poll, Colgate ninth in the coaches’ poll and eighth in the media poll and Clarkson 10th in the coaches’ poll and seventh in the media poll.

Union dominated the preseason all-conference team for the coaches and media. Leading the way is junior goalie Troy Grosenick. He won the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s top goalie with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage and made the All-ECACH first team. Overall, Grosenick was 22-6-3 with a 1.65 GAA, a .936 save percentage and five shutouts. He was a first-team All-America and Union’s first Hobey Baker top-10 finalist.

The other Dutchmen on the team are junior forward Daniel Carr and junior defenseman Mat Bodie. Carr had 20 goals and 20 assists last season. He became the first Union player to have two 20-goal seasons. Bodie was the second-leading scorer among ECACH defensemen with six goals and 16 assists and was a first-team All-ECACH. He finished with eight goals and 21 assists, and was a first-team All-America.

The coaches and media both picked Harvard defenseman Danny Biega and Quinnipiac forward Connor Jones on their respective teams. The only difference was the coaches picked St. Lawrence forward Kyle Flanagan, while the media selected Flanagan’s teammate, Greg Carey.

7. Dartmouth 58
8. RPI 46
9. Colgate 45

Media poll

The conference call is going on right now. I will update with reactions from RPI coach Seth Appert and Union coach Rick Bennett.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

These polls with a few exceptions are just looking in the rear view mirror. It does show however, that Union has earned the respect of its peers, which in itself is very gratifying after decades of irrelevancy. Here is the TU article from today's paper. FWIW, I agreed with Rick Bennett's and Seth Appert's quoted coachspeak. http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Union-given-top-ranking-3897370.php

What else are they supposed to say? You have one coach whose team has been picked first, sometimes a curse cast upon you by the other coaches in the league, trying to downplay it because he doesn't want his players to get fat heads. On the other hand, you have a coach across the river who thinks his team is better than they were projected, yet probably right on the money. I do, however, agree with the fact that Union has earned the respect of others in the league, and outside the league as well.

I think we are on the same page, hence my reference to classic "coach speak".

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

College Hockey News has put Union 4th on its preseason top 10.

Top 10 link: http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2012/09/27_gophers_are_good_as_gold.php

4. Union (26-8-7, 14-4-4 ECAC)

Union's run to the Frozen Four did more than just earn them street cred. Now, it's back, knowing how to win on the big stage, and are hungry for more. Of course, it will have to live up to the expectations now of having to produce an encore. The pieces are there to do it, though. Junior Daniel Carr has back-to-back 20 goals seasons and can score in every situation — he and senior Wayne Simpson (18-13—31) will be the go-to guys for an offense filled with players waiting to break out. Josh Jooris (8-20—28) is on the cusp of the big time after two seasons rounding out his game. Junior Troy Grosenick (22-6-3, 1.65 GAA, .936 SV%) proved his worth as a sophomore with a coming out party that saw him place among the national elite in every major category. Sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (5-17—22) followed up a strong freshman campaign with a standout National Junior Evaluation Camp, and looks ready to make the jump to star, and is a key part of what should be an excellent defense again.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

I would like for you to explain how we have been trolling. From what I can see, the posts our contingent have been making include a WaP post on your team, as well as information regarding your recruits, given that we have posters that regularly follow the recruit trail, and we just happened to notice Union listed. I don't typically start the "No, you suck" rhetoric until October, and it doesn't go into full force until the week we play you.

Wow...Touchy... ;) I didn't even call out anyone specific in name. FWIW, I was referring to some of the snide comments made about Messa and a few other assorted things....

I did like the WaP post on the Dutchmen...

I'd give props to Tom for that, but he blocked me on Twitter, so oh well...

I bet it hurt so much to write that...

So, I expect you'll be swinging a big club come Monday, then, eh???

Good luck to your squad and i hope everyone is healthy when we first meet...

See ya on the new thread...

Keith.

Thanks for the chuckle. I had wondered what you had regarded as RPI trolling, but comments about Messa/Achilles hadn't crossed me mind as it appears to be considered not to be a D-I facility by just about everyone.

Almost everything about Messa is deficient except for the most important thing. ;) For those who may have missed it, here is the link to the new in season thread. http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?101236-Union-Hockey-2012-2013-Unfinished-Business#post5509259

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

OK-the season ended on a down note and the final pools mean little or nothing except if you're Yale...However c'mon how in the world can BC be ranked ahead of Union?! (9th vs. 10th) I understand it's competition and quality wins and all that blah blah. That game was not just a 5-1 win. It was a thrashing! Frustrating!

flsug- welcome! Always nice to have more U fans on this thread. You may want to go to the following thread to follow off-season chatter http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?100454-Union-Hockey-Offseason-Thread-That-was-fun...

As for the polls, explain how 3 USCHO Poll voters gave Qpac 1st place votes over Yale!! I guess beating them 4-0 and beating 2 other #1 seeds wasn't convincing enough. Polls are always very subjective and will have strange anomalies. They are nice to brag (or complain) about, but not much more. In this case I'll just take the positive that U finished in the top 10, which makes 2 straight seasons doing so, and the satisfaction of a great win over the defending NC.

You can make the case, though, that the season series was 3-1 in favor of Q.
