Seven or eight years ago when Union was struggling, there was a ton of chatter on this board predicting that Union was going to return to D3. Great to see non-scholarship schools knock off the 'better' conferences.

That Union team would wipe the floor with the best of the best in D-III (well, maybe not St. Norbert
). Their speed, skating, passing and all-around team play was so impressive. I saw them live in Bridgeport and they quickly won me over as a fan.

They do have to play by DIII financial aid rules. The only DIII schools that can use DI financial aid rules are the ones that were "grandfathered" in because they already gave scholarships when the NCAA changed the rules for "play up" teams. I believe that list includes RPI, SLU, Clarkson, and Colorado College.

By "the same rules" doesn't negate the strong use of financial aid as a tool - only that it can't be disproportionately targeted at athletes.

And not targeted at any particular sport, either as is the case for any DIII athletic program. Certainly any DIII school with a strong endowment that can afford to provide good FA packages has an advantage

Technically, Union could have been grandfathered in. They CHOSE not to give out athletic scholarships, just like the Ivy League schools, and like you said, since that self inposed policy was in affect when the grandfathering clause took affect, they now must follow DIII rules.

Every single college hockey championship this year was won by D3 schools.

The UConn Hockey Classic is no longer.
Webster Bank Arena is set to announce that a similar four-team tournament will replace the classic next season in Bridgeport, with the field expected to include UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Union, according to sources.
The UConn Hockey Classic was held on the Storrs campus for 19 of 20 years (In Noriwch, 1997) before moving to the XL Center last season, when the field included champion Quinnipiac, Huskies, Sacred Heart and UMass.
The new tournament is expected to be named the Frozen Holiday Classic and the hope is that Yale eventually decides to join the field to make it an all-Connecticut event. A formal announcement is expected to be made Monday in Bridgeport.
The Huskies played in the championship game 14 times and won their own tournament three times (1995, 1999, 2005).

Not exactly. IRC, they are a DIII sport "playing up" in DI. All of the teams you mentioned were playing at the top level of hockey before the division classification came into play, Union wasn't. Thus, couldn't "give" athletic scholarships. There was a vote as to whether DIII schools "playing up" could allow for scholarships, and a separate vote for the teams you mentioned (the "grandfather" clause.) Union voted no on both propositions (****ing off its ECAC brethren,) the grandfather clause eventually passed, and schools who are DIII can no longer play any sport at the DI level and offer scholarships.

Actually not. Scholarships can be targeted to individuals, FA - as the other posters explained - must be doled out proportionately, specifically not targeting any sport, nationality or group of students. You can ask, Buff St, Neumann!, Morrisville, Geneseo, Potsdam?, et al.

Right.....like having huge FA breaks for foreign students isnt geared towards hockey? Yea because there are a lot of Canadians playing football and baseball in DIII. The Sweeds are just dominating the round ball game of hoops.
Hockey is so unique in that in the DIII world the majority of quality teams are made up of foreign players, and those that do not are typically at the bottom of the league. We've seen first hand at what a large class off foreign players can do to a struggling program. While you may not go out and win a National Championship like "some" cheaters, I mean schools, do....it can certainly elevate your program.
The NCAA has set a decent idea with the whole 51/49 non-athletes/athletes, but I still think there should be a % cap meaning:
25% of school bill
school A $35000 ( $8750 off ) =$26250
school B $15000 ( $3750 off ) =$11250
but too many times we see
school A $35000 ( $20000 off ) =$15000
school B $15000 ( $3750 off ) =$11250
Put a % cap and see what happens.....when some schools can't give out nearly free rides, they wont get the top quality recruits year in year out.
