Union College hockey 2025-26 thread

Korpi did not play well, and similar to the Yale game a few back, our defensemen just did not have their head in the game. The talent is there with this team, but the mental game is not. We might get their A game tonight but given the inconsistency I don’t see them getting to LP.
We will know the outcome of the game when the lines come out. If they don’t go to Gillespie tonight, Hauge is not serious about winning. The team does not play for Korpi like they play for Gillespie and it’s obvious. Gillespie when he’s on the bench this season is supporting every single guy as they come off from a shift, always the first guy up to rally the group. Korpi is a statue.

If a few of those unlucky breaks go their way and Gillespie is in net, they have a chance to win these 2 games. I believe they are the more talented team but are out-coached.

A clueless coach making clueless decisions. Korpi between the pipes!
Hauge’s main weakness is accountability - he just seems to shrug of the poor performances and mistakes. Lessard, for example, is a bad decision machine. He’s a freshman, he’ll get better (hopefully), but he keeps making the same mistakes and getting the same icetime. (And sure, he scored tonight, but he gave away the first Princeton goal on a platter, and turned over a short-handed breakaway five minutes later.)

I’ve got it Princeton sweep. 6-2, 5-2
Off by a goal, rats.

3rd year in a row Union is swept in the quarters. Unprepared and undisciplined is the name of the game. What a lovely email from Jimmy McLaughlin telling us how we should be so thankful for a great season when in reality, the #58 ranked SOS got them to 22 wins in the first place. Would love to clean house and start over!

Great Call, you nailed it !!!

Overall, I think this season was a disappointment. Coming off last season, when Union finished fourth in the regular season and had a good group returning, finishing 5th and getting swept in the quarterfinals (again) is not a good result.

What would have been a good result? Finishing (at least) fourth in the regular season, getting to Lake Placid, and winning at least one game there.

Union's 22 wins were the most since 2016-17, a good thing, but they benefited from a weak schedule.

I think this was the program's best chance for the time being to make a run. The losses after this season are going to be more than last year, in my opinion.

Four of the top 8 scorers (including three of the top five) - Buhr, Lindauer, Hanley, McArthur - will graduate.

Dunbar, who finished fourth in scoring, is a prime candidate to sign a pro deal after his breakthrough season.

I think Muthersbaugh is a dark-horse candidate to sign a pro deal. He was tied for the team lead in goals with 19.

If both of them turn pro, on top of those graduating, that amounts to a big loss.

What about the goaltending? Is it possible that Korpi or Gillespie transfers out if someone dangles a full-time role in front of either? Korpi won't have his brother on the roster next year, either. That seemed like one reason he came here to begin with, and it also seemed like there were few times they were in the lineup together. It should be noted that Union, at least check, has a goaltender recruit coming in this fall (Kyan Labbe), and I can't see them carrying four netminders.

I think the goaltending was hard to manage this year..... Honestly, I appreciate someone like Chauvette, a #1 who logged a ton of minutes, more after this year.

The defense has to get a lot better. I can't remember a Union team that had so many turnovers and gave up odd man rushes to the extent that this one did this year..... a leaky defense contributed to the goaltending issues.

I think last year was a good step, finishing fourth, and the pieces seemed to be in place for a better step this year, but between finishing a spot lower in the regular season and getting swept in the quarters, that didn't happen.

It kind of feels like a retooling is in the works.

Any thoughts?

I wish I didn’t nail it, that’s for sure. I would have much preferred to watch Union win in person today at Hobey Baker. Instead, we settled for Sacred Heart vs RMU and saw Lucas Massie sit on the bench and Greg Japchen play his final shift of his career.

I agree with most of these points. While I don’t believe Hauge is getting fired, I think it’s possible we see 2 new faces next to him on the bench next season as a way for him to pawn off some of the blame. In short, I believe that all 3 goalies will hop in the portal. I’m just not sure if they all will actually leave. To sum up the season it can only be a disappointment. The recruiting class will have to over perform big time and players that stay will also have to experience a lot of growth. I plan on writing something up on some of the recruits for next year, as I’ve been watching some of them in juniors this year.

Anything you think I missed the mark on? I am not always right.

I shared my thoughts here as opposed to the Union fans Facebook group, where anything less than rosy gets met with a lot of criticism.

Unless the things you mention happen - recruits overperform etc - next year seems like a sure step back as of today.

I don’t think you got anything wrong, but I am also not always right! I saw a lot of the Facebook chatter, I don’t get involved because there are parents in those groups and I don’t think it’s right for them to stumble across negative things about their kids in a Facebook group. And I also don’t get involved because I don’t have a Facebook, my wife just gives me the reports.

The one thing I would push back on a bit is that we will regress from this point. I don’t believe Union will drop from the 5-8 range because, simply put, there are multiple teams in the ECAC that refuse to field a competitive team. For some schools it’s pride, for others it’s coaching, for others it’s poor location. I also believe that the freshman and sophomore classes can grow a lot. The one benefit of playing some of these defensemen who make a lot of mistakes so much while they’re young is hopefully it leads to better development down the road.

It was pretty easy to see a lot of the moves that would be made at the end of last season, in my opinion. This year, I’m left with a ton of questions. Every skater on the roster played over 10 games so who knows who hops in the portal from that group. This year with the shorter window, I think lots of guys will be hopping in and taking a shot and greener pastures. That’s where my thought on all 3 goalies entering the portal comes from.

Here are my predictions for who enters the Portal on April 13th, with some landing spot predictions:

Connor Smith (St. Thomas), Ben Muthersbaugh (UNH), Jacob Jeannette (Bemidji State) Brayden Gillespie (UNH) Brendan Holahan (Top 15 D3), Cameron Korpi (Union), Luke Buss (Bowling Green).

No real actual info to back any of that up, just my read on the roster. Unless there was an injury I never heard about, I found it hard to believe Smith wasn’t playing at the end of the year. I think Muthersbaugh will look to level up to a hockey east school. Buss will look for playing time. Maybe Holahan takes a D3 spot similar to an Aksel Reid (25 GP with #6 Hamilton this year). Korpi is going to go wherever he is guaranteed game time, Union or not. And lastly, Gillespie to UNH keeps the Union to UNH goalie pipeline going! UNH has 1 goalie on the roster for next season who only played SJHL hockey with no current goalie commitments. They’ll be hitting the portal hard for a starter.

Senior Forward Brandon Buhr has signed a 1 year ELC with the Toronto Maple Leafs beginning next season. He has signed an ATO with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL for the remainder of this season.

If either Clarkson or Princeton wins the ECAC Tournament, the ECAC could have four teams in the playoffs.

I hope the Dutchmen face off against some of the better teams in College Hockey next year, rather than just cramming as many weaklings in their schedule as they can to get some wins. "Whatever does not kill you only makes you stronger."

Would love to see a tough road trip to an NCHC school next season or a trip to some of the better CCHA schools from this year. Might be able to bring in the top end of hockey east to play at home. I’m 95% positive the team is going to Fairbanks for a trip, so that takes away one weekend.

Nate Leaman, Joel Beal and the Friars are coming up next year

It may take away one weekend, but I don’t think that games in Alaska count against your maximum number of allotted games per season.

This past season, Colgate went on the road to Maine, Boston University, Michigan State and New Hampshire. From a fan’s perspective, I really enjoyed the tough competition.

Senior defenseman Nick Young has signed a standard player contract with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

Good to have 4 senior signings so far. I’d imagine maybe 1-2 more for this class unless someone decides to take an FPHL or SPHL deal.
