Q this season has been like two different teams. In conference play the have been almost unbeatable.
16-3-3
Goalie .932 1.619 best
1st - team defense 1.68 tied with Yale
In non-conference play they are
5-6-1
3-5-1 against HE
Goalie .918 1.918 (All games in and out of conference)
In SV% not in top 30.
St. Cloud best win (split)
They are doing it with defense but looking over all games, conference and non-conference, Yale, St. Lawrence and Colgate are better on D, Cornell almost as good.
They save their best for conference play.
Q has gotten better as the year has progressed.
Young team getting better.
In six of their overtime games, they have won three in OT. Never lost. In overtime they step it up a level. We are in trouble if we go to OT.
They have an overdrive gear. Great team speed.
Since January 1 the most they have given up at home is 3 (US and Merrimack)
We need a miricle from Stevens
We need the 3rd and 4th lines to step up like last week (even just show up)
We need to play the game in their zone with ferocious forechecking
We need to block shots - Matt Wilkens leads all forwards in BSs - We need at least 20
We need a perfect game - no mistakes.
If we can get one .... the smell of lake Placid may be enought to get the second.
Its Litchenwalds turn to step up - presence needs to be felt.

The main difference this weekend is that U could play very well and do most everything right.. and still lose. Q is very fast & skilled and plays disciplined defense. I'm not expecting them to suddenly get out of their game like Cornell did. In the previous games they did have stretches where they seemed to sit back and didn't move their feet, but would not expect much of that this weekend. U has got to play similar to how they did last Friday or like the BU game to have a chance. If they start to open things up a bit like last Saturday it could get ugly quickly. The one area U may have an advantage is between the pipes, assuming Colin continues his phenomenal play. Garteig has never overly impressed me, though he can be very good. Need to get shots on him as he does give up rebounds.. though this is tough because the Bobcats are great at getting sticks in passing lanes and blocking shots. I'm hoping the boys play with confidence and purpose and don't get rattled if they get behind. A couple weeks ago I was figuring the season would be over by now so not much to lose.. Goooooooooooooooo U!!

I think we'll know tonight who will eventually win the series. I like Union's chances if it capture game one... I think the team can win one of the final two.
But it's going to be a very tough row to hoe if Union loses tonight and then has to win back-to-back games there.

Kudos to their goalie .... and to Stevens.
"Union lead 3-1 with 1:26 in regulation before Sam Anas scored a pair of extra-attacker goals 49 seconds apart to force overtime."
How did we give up a 3-1 lead and two goals with 2 minutes to play to let them tie it in regulation.
3 games, all 4-3 loses.
Can we push it to a game 3?
We should have been up 5-1 in the third.
Its really too bad. Because Q has no quality wins and such a terrible non-conference record (5-6-1 and 3-5-1 against HE) they would have dropped like a lead balloon in the pairwise if we could have sweep. If we could have nailed them twice, we could have had the satisfaction of not only knocking them out of Lake Placid but also the NCAA tournament and could have ended their season completely. There is still hope but its awfully slim.
Too many men on the ice with a minute to go? How much did they pay the refs?

Tough loss last night but credit to QU. Will be in attendance tonight and stay to the end win or lose and savor every moment. The seniors may be playing their last college game (hopefully not) but I will remember their contribution to a National Championship forever. This years freshmen will go on forge their own legacy at Union and the future is bright.

A very tough loss. We played 50 minutes of good hockey. Then defense for the rest of the game. Were we tired ? The problem with QU is that they have very good talented players (credit to them for that !). Those players cannot show their skill when they are being pressed and under pressure. Their skill as a team is good, not exceptional. If you keep the team under pressure for the whole game, you're fine. You stop playing, you're screwed : their top players will explode through any space they are given. And they never give up. It's a very well deserved win for them.
As for the 6 on 5 and 6 on 4 at then end, why do we not ice the puck ? We get possession at least 3 or 4 times and we try to be cute. Who cares ? they are all over us, outplaying us and we are being totally dominated. Ice the **** puck !!!!! But no, we get cute, and they scored gorgeous goals. I hope our players can look at what QU did and learn. If you want it, it will come.
If we can play 60 minutes tonight, I like our chances. If we can play 60 minutes.

It was blatant. Just a lack of discipline at that moment. Bennett was actually shaking his head in disbelief.
Looked to me that the open net was like a magnet to them, trying to get the clear shot from 180' away.
Agree that the open net was too tempting for them. If Union ices the puck a couple of times (maybe just once), they'd hold on.
The killer to me was not scoring on the 2-man PP for a full two minutes in the second period. Already up 2-0, if they score once there, it's a different game.

I have to admit, when you went up 3-1 I thought it was lights out.
That kill definitely woke us up. Seemed to deflate Union as well.

Understandable, but even though Union has found their defensive game lately, they've given up 2 & 3-goal leads a number of times this year. I wasn't counting my chickens until the clock hit all zeros.

Not sure what to expect tonight, as the Bobcats definitely got their wakeup call last night. Hope the boys still have something left in the tank. All I'll say is make sure you bring an orthopedic seat cushion when watching a Union - Quinnipiac playoff game

Very good game by U for about 50 minutes and then Q turned it up a notch.. kudos to them, that's what good teams do. As others noted, a couple of key opportunities to ice the puck at the end might have been the difference. But was very happy with the play of the young players, particularly the D-men. They stood up Q at the blueline early and forced them to take some chances they don't normally take and then converted. Also another excellent game by Stevo. All around it was a fantastic game to watch even with the unhappy ending for U.
